  • Hii everyone!
So finally I had time to start my two REACT-Cards for this month! Here's my full reaction to the 2019 film, The Lighthouse. Starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe. Both really great actors. This movie is quite still and eerie, sort of have to decide yourself the meaning. I could only ask questions through out watching, so you get my full theory at the end. I'm qurious to know if any of you have any ideas as to what happend. Really enjoyed the peformance. Well made little movie. Thank you Martin for your pick! Hope everyone enjoys. Thank you so much for watching!

The Lighthouse is loosely based on a true story about two lighthouse keepers who both where named Tom. The older one died mysteriously and the younger one was so emotionally scared that his family said he seemed like a different person entirely.

Wow. Love the interpretations. I was impressed with the idea of the interaction in the morning and evening between the two. There are so many movies that people view as open to interpretation, but that there is an underlying firm suggestion as to what happened (Synecdoche NY, Mulholland Drive), but there have been so many inventive interpretations to this movie, that all sit well with the scenes and themes, that I really think this one is open. Winslowe (or whoever) is the POV of the movie, and, unless Ephraim is himself going mad and hallucinating the presence of himself as a younger man, we have to assume Tommy is real. The movie works as Ephraim gradually driving Tommy mad to take his share of the pay, or just as a sociopathic experiment, and it goes further than he expects, getting himself killed. It also works as any level of Tommy imagining Ephraim in his mad guilt, or even imagining the island (though, as a lumberman, he likely would not have accurately imagined the finer points of the running of a lighthouse, unless he was exposed to it in the Pacific NW. It also works as him being in hell, as other commenters have said, but, once more, his observation of the workings of a lighthouse makes me think he is on the island. It is like a more nebulous version of Jacob's Ladder (without a redemption at the end) and that may have been some degree of an inspiration.
Anyhow, great ideas! Good job predicting the seagull feast at the end! Excited to see your views of some other movies!

When you said "no matter how poor they always had cigarettes" it reminded me that cigarettes were actually a lower class invention since cigars were expensive and more for upper class so having a cigarette when you are poor in those days is exactly how it would be.

I think you really nailed your analysis. You figured things out as they happened. I'm super impressed.
I would love to see you watch and react to Kubrick's movies.

i hadn't heard the split personality theory yet, that's a decent one...my take is, Tommy's in Hell. he either died right after Ephraim did, he watched him die, then lost his footing and went the same way...or he killed himself later, or like Tom suggested, he was wandering the woods in "Canady", and died of exposure maybe... however it happened, i think this is his afterlife of self-imposed punishment for his feelings guilt. that wouldn't explain why it's all nautical themed tho...idk about that..

American tobacco was basically given away at that time, sort of like water it was just a given human necessity

I love your idea of the conscious vs unconscious mind, especially in their interactions.
I also wonder if it could be an interplay where Wake represents the beastial desires of the id, driving Howard relentlessly and unhealthily, Howard represents the ego, the tortured self, and the seagull represents the superego or conscience, constantly nagging at Howard until he snaps at it and abandons it entirely.
Looking at Howard, Wake, and the full as manifestations of the same essential character seems like a powerful interpretation for this film.

Nice reaction, or would have been if you weren't texting 100% of the time after the first half. I mean, you still understood and enjoyed more of the movie than most reactors but dude, that's too much damn texting for a reaction video.

HAHAHA sorry to dissapoint. unfortunately I was rolling a J to enjoy after the movie 😂😂 I have ADHD so i need something to fickle with while sitting still. Texting i never do almost, especially if im doing something else, can't consentrate on the writing. I do apologize if it's distracting, but sadly i do move around a lot or keep something in my hand if I'm sitting down over 30min. It does look like a lot here though, since it's cut down to 30 min, on the full version on my patreon it's only for a few sec here and there to make sure i don't fuck up my rolling. I promise i'm paying more attention than i would if i was just sitting there staring (I zone out). Thank you for the compliment though! haha
