Virginia is very ‘blue’ ( democratic ). Its schools are excellent. The Univ. of Virginia is a top tier college. I hope you were able to visit it. I live in the middle of DC, so a drive to the vineyards isn’t far- perhaps a couple of hours. You asked a great question about what has sustained the US for over 240 years, I would say the Constitution. But it hasn’t been easy. The Civil War cost us 600,000 to 700,000 lives. Our population was only about 35 million. There are battlefields all over Virginia. By the way, when you were in Alexandria, I hope you visited Gadsby’s Tavern. George Washington and his wife visited Gadsby’s frequently as his estate was only about 10 miles from there. It was a typical tavern in its day, and still is. And yes, they even danced. After his presidency Washington only lived a few years at his estate. He stood on the steps of the tavern in 1799 for his last birthday parade, and died later in that year. It’s too bad our governments don’t seem to get along. Russians and Americans seem very similar in spirit, and expansive in their personalities. I’ve found Western Europeans much more difficult and a bit stuffy. I know several Russians here - they fit right in. Anyway, sorry you did not come after the worst of Covid was over. Shenandoah National Park, like Blue Ridge Mountains, are part of Appalachian Mountain area. That is about 19-20 miles away. Charlottesville is nice to visit but terrible to live & work there. People are rude and all about me first, even driving.

I'm a 3rd generation American, my grandparents immigrated from Russia so I'm really interested in Russian history and culture. I would love to visit Russia someday. In answering your question about why American became a powerful nation, I believe that the hope of freedom and the ability to control your own destiny is a huge factor. America has drawn people from every part of the world. We call it the melting pot. We all come from somewhere else, some left their country from persecution of religious or political beliefs, some came here to flee poverty in their own country. We bring different cultures into a environment of where the best of each culture merges together and becomes an American. I value my Russian heritage but I value my country the United States more. There is a saying "From many we become one". We as a nation still have many obstacles to overcome and in no way are perfect but we will always strive to be better, its called the American experiment. Beautiful landscapes there! A big reason we are successful is that we have a large entrepreneurial and small business class. Why? Because you can start a business easily and quickly, without undue bureaucracy. Try to open an office or a retail space for a new biz in Mumbai or Seoul - sooo much red tape. When you have the ability to do it so easily, people will do it! If you have a dream or idea you can put it in action. Also no one’s gonna shake you down - low-to-no corruption here. Your new young friends are the perfect real examples - a coffee biz and a bakery biz - there you go! That’s American can-do right there.

Our Revolutionary War ultimately was decided in The South, things were hard fought to a more or less Stalemate in The North. England counted on support in The South, which it had to a degree in Savannah and Charleston;.but in the hills, the wilderness it was a different matter. Charleston was "Charlestown" before defeating The British; after our victory Charleston sounded less British. It, (Independence), might not have happened without French help . Michael is from Richmond, a little college town to the East of Charlottesville. It used to be the capital city of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Today, it's about the biggest hipster place you can imagine, and Michael's style of dress is very reminiscent of that area. His outfit is very well put together and I appreciate his knowledge of coffee. It was funny to see his demeanor switch to a businessman's presentation when he was going over the bag, haha. By the way, Charlottesville is home to the prestigious University of Virginia, a school founded by Thomas Jefferson!

Not really, Charlottesville is home to many "old money" families and vineyards. Also, it depends what you mean by "shit", but Richmond does have a lot of crime, but also a vibrant social and party scene with lots of emphasis on the arts. It depends on what you're looking for. Both places are affordable to live in when compared to Northern Virginia.

Kouign-Amann is a very difficult pastry to make from Brittany, France. Very delicious and I only know of one place here in Sydney which sells it. On role models for USA when it became independent only other working republic was the Netherlands (Dutch Republic). Venice was a republic as well but was not favoured as a model. Arguably the US originally went for an 'elected monarchy' style scenario similar to the UK during the mid 17th century. But over time the constitution evolved to become much more democratic in nature.

Even his inauguration videos on TH-cam had more thumbs down than thumbs up and the total number of those watching their videos was embarrassingly low. The reason Americans work so hard is because of the Calvinist work ethic many of the first settlers brought with them when fleeing Europe. In Calvinist Protestantism, the harder you work the better your chances of going to heaven. It’s ludicrous as we have a “live to work” mentality compared to other countries who have a “work to live” mentality. One I much prefer to be honest, even being an American.

To your point about Russia being lazy (I appreciate it was said in jest), Germany ranks pretty high in the number of public holidays globally but happens to be one of the most productive countries per capita. America success isn't quite as lucky as you might think. Sure all other countries at the time were run by kings and queens but they didn't have much longer to last. In the universities in Germany and other places around the world, elites were already talking about government rule without kings and queens. It was early 1800s when the 2 main socialist concepts started to emerge from the shadows. Because of our revolution, we had opportunity to be the first to try governing without a monarchy. It was based on ideas already growing in universities and based on religious principles and religious freedoms. When socialism sprouted in the 1800s, they were decidedly taking another path and the people at the time really didn't see USA as all that successful. We got some respect during WWI but only till after WWII was USA seen as a success. It took over a 100 years as a fledgling democracy to work through many of the growing pains.

We bring different cultures into a environment of where the best of each culture merges together and becomes an American. I value my Russian heritage but I value my country the United States more. There is a saying "From many we become one". We as a nation still have many obstacles to overcome and in no way are perfect but we will always strive to be better, its called the American experiment. Beautiful landscapes there! A big reason we are successful is that we have a large entrepreneurial and small business class. Why? Because you can start a business easily and quickly, without undue bureaucracy. Try to open an office or a retail space for a new biz in Mumbai or Seoul - sooo much red tape. When you have the ability to do it so easily, people will do it! If you have a dream or idea you can put it in action. Also no one’s gonna shake you down - low-to-no corruption here. Your new young friends are the perfect real examples - a coffee biz and a bakery biz - there you go! That’s American can-do right there.

Such nice people! What Michael said about echo chamber and ideology was absolutely on point. Open minds and critical thinking skills are so important in maintaining a vibrant Democracy. Each issue has so many variables. It's important in my opinion to often have a robust counterpoint voice to every direction we are heading as a Nation. Our Revolutionary War ultimately was decided in The South, things were hard fought to a more or less Stalemate in The North.
England counted on support in The South, which it had to a degree in Savannah and Charleston;.but in the hills, the wilderness it was a different matter. Charleston was "Charlestown" before defeating The British; after our victory Charleston sounded less British. It, (Independence), might not have happened without French help . Michael is from Richmond, a little college town to the East of Charlottesville. It used to be the capital city of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Today, it's about the biggest hipster place you can imagine, and Michael's style of dress is very reminiscent of that area. His outfit is very well put together and I appreciate his knowledge of coffee. It was funny to see his demeanor switch to a businessman's presentation when he was going over the bag, haha. By the way, Charlottesville is home to the prestigious University of Virginia, a school founded by Thomas Jefferson!

Not really, Charlottesville is home to many "old money" families and vineyards. Also, it depends what you mean by "shit", but Richmond does have a lot of crime, but also a vibrant social and party scene with lots of emphasis on the arts. It depends on what you're looking for. Both places are affordable to live in when compared to Northern Virginia.
Yes really Richmond for years had the most corrupt local government in the United states. They have been taken over by radical leftist with help from govenor black face northam. It's the same in both Richmond and Charlottesville. Been here all my life. They are both shit holes. Just like the state of Virginia. FACT!!!!
Kouign-Amann is a very difficult pastry to make from Brittany, France. Very delicious and I only know of one place here in Sydney which sells it. I've mastered homemade sfogliatelle and canneles so would love to try baking these. Beautiful place and very stimulating and informative interviews with these two young entrepreneurs. Great video!

On role models for USA when it became independent only other working republic was the Netherlands (Dutch Republic). Venice was a republic as well but was not favoured as a model. Arguably the US originally went for an 'elected monarchy' style scenario similar to the UK during the mid 17th century. But over time the constitution evolved to become much more democratic in nature.

@@lotusholder that was not a political rally, that was a planned celebration, a victory party, there is some difference. Biden/Harris had several rallies, and hardly anyone attended. Even his inauguration videos on TH-cam had more thumbs down than thumbs up and the total number of those watching their videos was embarrassingly low. Any videos that allowed comments were soon removed due to the number of negative comments.

Poor Biden and Harris couldn't draw crowds- though for Biden, it was earlier on a multi-candidate race, for which he was considered an also-ran; and later, after his nomination, there was a pandemic IIRC, so really an asymmetrical comparsion; and anyway, he and she ended up winning, if you think about it- I guess that was an adequate consolation prize for him, not being such a celebrity and such. Of course, actually winning and then steadily crafting government policy is pretty old-fashioned, nowadays- I guess that my opinions are behind the times.

Biden's presidency so far has included a large legislative package passed, a recovering economy, a steadily rising stock market, cabinet positions soon filled, professionalism and a respect for science being restored in federal government, all rather than drama revolving around a president's pathology, as was the case during the trump years. Also, signs so far point to a much lower degree of criminality in the executive branch at this time than under the previous admin. All of this undoubtedly uninspiring and even boring stuff to you, but nevertheless useful to the U.S.
Still, there will always be trump fans and Biden/Harris haters who will emphasize questions of fandom, or peculiar notions about charisma, or raise fringe doubts and questions, and who are bigger fans of all of that than of the more consequential aspects of reality- but those people, and yourself, would better serve themselves and others by bringing a more serious attitude to questions pertaining to governance, than to 'likability.' You're just scratching the surfaces of your biases.
This whole exchange between us started after you expressed your focus upon huge crowds, and continued as you expressed your youtubistic/social media-oriented concerns about doubts about Biden's popularity, and swiftly added conspiracy-tinged musings. Better, rather than emphasizing your notions of popular support, to focus upon the real election outcome and upon real matters of governance, which are much more important to the well-being of this or any other nation.

The reason Americans work so hard is because of the Calvinist work ethic many of the first settlers brought with them when fleeing Europe. In Calvinist Protestantism, the harder you work the better your chances of going to heaven. It’s ludicrous as we have a “live to work” mentality compared to other countries who have a “work to live” mentality. One I much prefer to be honest, even being an American.

Great video but I don’t know why the transatlantic slave trade was completely glossed over as a contributing factor to America’s success. Prisoners of geography by Tim Marshall takes a more objective approach to world development, I’d highly recommend it.
To your point about Russia being lazy (I appreciate it was said in jest), Germany ranks pretty high in the number of public holidays globally but happens to be one of the most productive countries per capita. Japan on the other hand is a polar opposite.

America success isn't quite as lucky as you might think. Sure all other countries at the time were run by kings and queens but they didn't have much longer to last. In the universities in Germany and other places around the world, elites were already talking about government rule without kings and queens. It was early 1800s when the 2 main socialist concepts started to emerge from the shadows. Because of our revolution, we had opportunity to be the first to try governing without a monarchy. It was based on ideas already growing in universities and based on religious principles and religious freedoms. When socialism sprouted in the 1800s, they were decidedly taking another path and the people at the time really didn't see USA as all that successful. We got some respect during WWI but only till after WWII was USA seen as a success. It took over a 100 years as a fledgling democracy to work through many of the growing pains.
