Had a California import in the UK same shaft drive etc but was 1000cc was great bike a torque monster ...always find the 850 an interesting size inbetween the 750 and 1000 cc they are pretty rare now .
i owned one of these to back in the day had a fight with ex-girlfriend drank a bottle of whiskey...put the 850 up to 110 mph it started tank slapping bad my front tyre must have been rounded off i thought this was the end ...back the throttle off bike came out of it ......then brought its bigger brother the gs 1000 thos where the days🤣🤣
I know that feeling only I had the front slapping and when I backed off the rear joined in. Thought it was going to throw me off at well over 90mph in the Isle of Man. But us Brits had the much lower handlebars for a much better riding position.
Had very similar 800 back in the 90’s ( I’m pretty sure it was 800 not a 850, maybe 1980 or ‘82 memory ain’t what it use to be ) I had put quite a bit of $$ into it to get it on road and beat the snot out of it for a couple years till I got run over by a Dodge Ram heavy duty in front of my apt…lol sold it cheap because of that and it turned out , come to find out later from guy who bought it it wasn’t hurt at all lol 🤷🏼♂️

Notice the kick starter upgrade. They only offered that for 1 year in 1979 on the 850g.
It’s most likely a hodgepodge engine. 79 bottom end and 80+ head to keep the CVs
