    I'm an oncology nurse, I'm coming up on 11 months as a nurse. In the beginning I HATED IT, mainly due to ratios. on my unit we usually have 5 patients, sometimes 6. I strongly believe anything more than 4 patients should be against the law nation wide. whenever I have a patient on a heparin drip, or a HIPEC patient I get a little nervous because it can be challenging to manage those patients with a team of 5. I love working with those impacted by cancer, but I've been contemplating finding somewhere where I can get a strict 4 patient ratio...even if that means moving to California. When I'm at 4 I feel like an actual nurse, and not just a work horse running around. I like patient centered care, not task oriented care and unfortunately health care is very task oriented.

      THIS IS SO TRUE!! Man....If I could get into healthcare policy, there are several things I would change. Ratios is definitely one of them!

      I completely agree. When I have fewer patients, I'm a better nurse. It's nice to have the time to sit and talk with them and their families and explain things to them in detail versus getting frustrated with a lot of questions cause you're falling behind every second :/

      Hey there! I just wanted to ask how it was working on the cardiac unit? I'm a recent graduate. My initial hope was to work in OB, however my top hospital's new grad residency isn't hiring into that unit at the moment. I'm a bit at a loss right now, and have been considering the cardiology unit because I had a few weeks on one during my clinicals.

    First and foremost, THANK YOU SO SO SOOO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I’m a new grad RN and have been struggling trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I knew in my heart I wanted to get into aesthetics and also working in an outpatient setting, but I’d get a lot of opinions about it. A lot were “you should do bedside because if you don’t, you won’t have a lot of options later” orrrrr people would imply that those choices wouldn’t make me a “real nurse.” So when you mentioned about being honest with yourself and saving lives is also the preventative side of things, that hit home for me. ♥️ Thank you again for your guidance and all of your content!

    • @sls1776
      @sls1776 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Follow your passion! Nurse Kendra on TH-cam recently posted a video about nursing being a great profession because there are so many options. She even highlighted how one of her nursing students did not go into bedside nursing and went straight to public health nursing, never worked in a hospital. After nursing school I worked in a rehab facility and then followed that with 9 years of home Care. I just accepted an offer as a med-surg nurse at my local hospital so don't let people tell you you aren't a real nurse if you haven't worked at the bedside. I cannot stand the nasty nurses who spew that and undermine those who have not worked in the hospital! That was one reason I avoided hospitals because it is quite a toxic culture and a pissing match. When I worked at a rehab facility we had a few 10 plus year Hospital nurses come in and apply thinking the job would be easy and they did not make it through orientation because they underestimated how much work goes into rehabs and nursing homes. Please don't set aside your dreams because of the competitive toxic nurse culture! Trust me, working in a hospital does not make you a better nurse. What makes you the best nurse is thriving in the environment that you work in and being able to provide quality care to your population of patients, as well as being compassionate and empathetic. I do know a nurse that went from the emergency room to aesthetics and wish she had done it sooner!

This also made me realize I may want to consider an LDRP bc I LOVE the labor process but I learned in med surg I like having the same patients for a few days in a row. So maybe an LDRP unit would suit me better after I transition.

    Omg thank youuu!! I’m a nursing student graduating in May and I feel like your questions were different than others I’ve seen. Your approach about not letting anyone else’s answers deter you or change your mind was really comforting. I’ve always been drawn to L&D, lactation, midwifery (and community education/health maintenance & prevention), but felt pressured to at least “try” adrenaline junkie type environments to really “make it” and be considered a “real nurse”. Your video reminded me that ALL types of nurses are needed and that following what will motivate us to LEARN more will also keep us enjoying how we serve patients. I appreciate you!! THANK YOU, NURSE ROCKY!!✨🙏🏽

A lot of your questions, such as setting and patient population don't necessarily affect me much, but one thing I NEED is the fast paced adrenaline rush since I was an EMT/firefighter before nursing and my hobbies are adrenaline based as well.
    Other than ER or flight nursing, the only other things I'd consider would be L&D (without postpartum) or CRNA!

    First time here and I’m approaching graduation at the end of the year. I’m leaning towards peds or OB, but I really don’t know. I was looking forward to clinicals to see, but this corona done messed it all up. ANYWAYS I just wanna say you’re pretty and this camera quality is ON. POINT. Ok bye lol.

    This video came right on time. I am in my last level of nursing, and I honestly am so torn 😩 I have always wanted to do psych, then I have thought about hospice, or dialysis, but everyone reccommends med surg. I absolutely have never wanted to work Med surg, but I know the experience is helpful, especially if I ever wanted to switch departments... I excelled in my MH rotation so idk 😩

      A Dose Of Candy if you don’t want to do med surg, don’t! That’s what I’m in right now to get me through school, and i know for a fact i would never work on my unit as a nurse. If you want to go into MH, go into that! There isn’t much experience wise in med surg that will help you in the MH world long run.

      A dose of candy, you're exhibiting traits of extreme intelligence. Trust me your oath Is even beyond nursing. Ask yourself some honest questions, looking at all your loves and hates skills you've developed. What would i want to become. Itd amaze you the answer that comes out. You're a rare Gem, take time to listen to you and discover yourself. Cheers 🎉

    I'm currently in the prenursing program at a community College in my area and am stressing on doing our abridge program (lpn->bsn->MN with a possibility of NP) I've always told myself I wanna be in NICU but wanna be somewhere high stress like ER but I'm starting to reconsider. I love babies but I know the costs of NICU 😅
    I also love psychology and wanted to be a psychiatrist for the longest so I might do something in that field. I wish there was a test lol like the ones you take in HS but just for nurses 😭🤣

    My dream is to become a nurse but I do not want to interact with the patients. Can u write a list of things that I could do? Nursing is the only career I want to go into.
