With all due respect, you never know until you try. And even if it doesn't "suit" you according to aesthetics taught in society, doesn't mean you shouldn't even consider it. Personally, I don't have a symmetrical face, my bone structure isn't "pretty", my skin tone is hard to work with, I don't have any small rounded features, so trial and error is all I got. Most things don't "work" for me, but if it feels like *me*, I know it's right. I appreciate the videos, but I just had to say this because normal everyday women don't look like models and celebrities who have photogenic and versatile features.

Exactly!! All these abitrary rules on what styles people can wear can be so damaging.
She never tells anyone they CAN'T do something. The point of her vids is what would look best and most harmonious on each person. Whether or not you want to adhere to that advice is your business and your choice. So many people getting all defensive cause they think they're being told they can or can't do something... There's no rules here, just guidance for people who want it. If you don't want it, why bother showing up?

I always thought I would look awful with bangs, then I got talked into them by a hairdresser. Finally upgraded to baby bangs and GOD I love them I just love looking in the mirror and feeling hot. Every site said it would make my round face look awful, but they look awesome and pair fantastic with my weird alt Victorian librarian aesthetic

This is exactly why I love watching her too. She shares so many insights on what she understands as beautiful based on many different sort of logical or common ideas, harmony, balance, and she can say things I may disagree with, but I never feel she is judging anyone, and she never disregards the possibility that there can always be exceptions to these supposed rules. It definitely feels more in line with trying to help people who are seeking this type of advice because of what they’re currently doing not feeling like it’s working well for them and Aly’s videos can help them understand why, and what they could try out to change it.
I appreciate you took time to make this video! I realized that many hairdressers don't take into account the person themselves when they recommend a hair style, it's like they think of the hair as a separate things. This is why we see people who could look better and I realized why I don't straight hair that many hairdressers like to do on me. My best hair style is my natural wild waves, as my face is like what you described on Russian women.
I liked what you said about the importance of the overall vibe of a look. I was thinking this about outfits for the body types too - we often focus a lot on the silhouette and how harmonised it is with the bone structure, but the overall vibe should also be taken into account
I think you make such a good point about photoshoots where the "story" the photo is telling isn't cohesive, or where different elements are brought in without any thought or purpose behind them.
I am very amazed at your content, such detailed analysis. Also I admire your way of speech, it's so rare these days to find someone who speak in such composed manner, not jitterly, fluent and precise, sufficient in adjectives and descriptions, not just "cute" "pretty". Apart from that, being able to share so much on the topic and extending to history, I'm utterly amazed, much respect.

I'm asian so my face is more on the rounded and flat side. I always felt more comfortable with the short wispy bangs because it always flattered my face. Even when hair dressers would tell me to not get bangs, I would always follow your advice and cut my bangs myself. I never felt confident with my face shape without bangs so thank you so much for this information.

I'm not east asian, but I love shorter bangs on me, (never tried baby bangs, more right at the eyebrows kind of length.) And every time I tell ANY hairdresser I want them I hear some variation of "Short bangs look good on high foreheads, your forehead is rather small so you need long curtain bangs, blah blah. ."🤦🏻♀️ and at that length I don't look like I have bangs at all, and it's definitely not my best look. 😭
The longest bangs that would still look good on me is around my cheekbones, plus the shorter ones.
I actually insisted on having them once when the hairdresser was very adamant, and after she was done she went "Oh, it actually opened up your face. It quite suits you."

Yes! Gamine. Long bangs look ridiculous on me too. They steal my natural electricity and make me look unsure of myself without my changing anything else. Pics with long bangs just look kind of off and apologetic.

Thank you for taking the time to source all of these photos and for giving thoughtful explanations for why, perhaps geometrically, but definitely with an eye for art, some looks might not be aesthetically pleasing. It is clear that you approach your work with an eye for art versus being critical for criticism’s sake.
I'm a soft natural and have baby bangs, but my hair is very wavy almost curly. This hairstyle is the one that suits me the most, it is indeed an accessory and I've been using it for years now. This hairstyle however is one that requires constant maintenance. I need to cut my bangs every 2 weeks or so. I've also experimented with colors (always leaving my roots) with bright colors. I love it.
War flashbacks to high school when my mom cut my bangs too short but said they would be longer once they dried lmaoo I was so embarrassed to walk down the hall with bangs halfway up my forehead. Some women look amazing with short bangs, but I am definitely not one of them.

I actually got short bangs accidently; I asked my husband to cut my hair and he accidently cut the front too short, giving me bangs. I had avoided them because I thought they'd look odd with curly hair, but they look pretty good! They hide my 5 head lol

Oh boy why don’t the hairdressers know this informations? I would love go to hair salon again but they don’t know what they do any like always I get some wired haircuts... some of them curled my curly hair... some of them gives me short bangs or straight cuts although I have coarse thin hair 😩 can you pls make one video about coarse thin hair? 🥺💕
same! my advice is go to the best hair dresser and make a major change and only go for the cheaper ones for trimming. And test the dresser showing some pictures of haircuts you know don't suit you at all and ask their opinion saying that you want so much to have it but don' know if it suits you. If they say they will try - run. Good hairdresser isn't going to rip you off but will want you to come back again and again and will advice on what cuts suit your face the best and will check if your hair structure can pull it off.
This is the exact reason why I taught myself to cut my own hair. Hairdressers (unless you can afford to pay high end prices) do not get it or know how to cut what you want and look out if you have nice hair they love to chop it off! The latter is why I learned to do it myself even to the point of coloring it. This is why I love Aly she is an excellent source of information and actually practices what she teaches us. 👍😀
Actually a good hair dresser I'd say is the one that modifies the haircut you want to suit your facial features and not copy the picture you are using as a reference, maybe make it a bit more longer or shorter, curved or something like that in the case of the micro bangs 💜

@@prettyhamburger6462 yes I cut them short. I have to trim them now lol its so worth it. They look super cool and I think baby bangs go so well with cat eye glasses. Try them and if you don't like just let grow out. I thought I was going to look weirder too lol but bangs just add a little something extra to our look. Go for it if you want, get it out of your system lol

I've had short bangs for about 4 years and had regular bangs ever since I was 15 (I'm now 24). I just can't picture myself without bangs 🙈
I was w/o bangs for about a decade, but for my hair growth patterns (ie, widow’s peak) and face shape & features, I’m SO much better off WITH bangs!
They truly DO act as a face accessory, framing my face to be more flattering & softer-looking. I need them to create that geometric line, and to partner w/ my arched brows. I have high-contrast coloring (dark hair, medium-fairish skin), and the black hair sitting across the forehead creates a whole different MOOD for my face, vs. when I lift up my bangs-my face looks too empty…it looks like it’s missing some visual interest.
My bangs grow downwards, so I don’t have to do anything to them, unless I have bed head. I don’t feel them at all, so I’m never self-conscious about them, as long as I maintain them to be along the optimal length range.
I don’t think I’ll ever be growing them out again. I like being low-maintenance, yet looking pulled together, and the bangs, because they’re a geometric accessory, contribute significantly to that look & objective.

@@indigo2018 I have a rather square jaw and I look good with short bangs (long bangs look really bad on me). They are about one finger above the brows and are slightly rounded and a bit curled at the edges. Hope that helps
@@indigo2018 the shorter the hair, the bigger your face and features will look and vice versa. If you don't have a problem with that, great. As for myself, learned it the hard way lol

I have a long face but really dramatic features, now I have short feathery bangs and they balance all my face, it looks shorter and energetic. I used to wear long bangs and always looked tired without make up, so I think that exceptions are possible :)

Could have done with this video 3 months ago lol TOO LATE NOW. I cut jagged short bangs on my rounded romantic face/small features. Without makeup and a natural look, no it does look great, very weird. I get what aly says about the vibe of that person all matching up. I felt I had to go heavy on the makeup, dramatic and edgier with clothes to match the style, then it looked pretty cool. But that's not me all the time. I also tried the wild warrior woman style clothing and it looked good haha but I was changing myself FOR the haircut. So if you do change up the vibe of your whole look a lot it might not be for you maybe.

I had short bangs years qgo, but they werent cut by a hairdresser, so they it didnt fit me that well. One and a half year ago I cut my hair to a short pixie, with short bangs, and I love them, they make me very cute-looking and cool at the same time. Btw I'm a gamine (bit on the softer side)

Just in case, I've visited amazon tribes in Peru and bangs is most definitely important for them. It has always been and portrayed with it in peruvian books. From children to adult people, they wear baby bangs with long wavy hair at the back.
Very astute. There are so many things to take into consideration when creating a look with clothing, makeup and hairstyle. Bone/body structure and facial features are certainly important. You pretty much covered all the elements in creating different looks with short bangs. It is all art. Great job!

I'm soft natural and I do like my hair and bangs in pinup/goth style, but recently I got a more layered cut and let it be free and more curly, and indeed, it looks even better. This is the right "rebel" cut for my face. And the best part is, it is natural, so my hair looks great all the time.
Alice Pagani (actress who played Ludo in Baby) still managed to look gorgeous in that hairstyle. I don't think it flatters many people.

3:53 I completely disagree with you. I do hair for a living and personally I love a shag/mullet with a baby bang. I love layered hair with baby bangs in general. It is a juxtaposition and makes the style more interesting.

I used to have side swept bangs before because I was so afraid of getting short bangs. Looking back, any kind of longish bangs arent suited to me at all because they look too visually heavy for my face.
Same. It looks like my face is drowning & oppressed. It’s amazing how much difference even 1/4” makes to the look of bangs in relation to the facial features & geometry. I actually just refreshed my bangs last night, after they’d reached that max length before I felt really ugly & messy.
1/2” above my brows is the sweet spot for me, since I have a short face.

I had long bangs most of my life, because I was trying to head my big forehead. Then I found a picture of me looking cute in second grade, with short bangs and it got me thinking. I have delicate, sharp features, a “dry” face. My hair is natural platinum white (I’m old). So I cut short bangs, not far to the sides, kind of feathery, and it suits me really well, just like it did 60 years ago lol.
May as well give it a try if you're not sure, short bangs grow out SO fast
The only kind if bangs I've had and always cut them myself in moments of distress lol but they look cool and I love them on my curly hair.

Maybe you could get a haircut with layers for volume and try different ways to get more volume and maybe try waves or curls, maybe a perm would help too

First: What is your body type? Do you have a muscular face? Or more on the bony side? What makes your features big? Bones or flesh? Some people have "fleshy" noses, ears or cheeks, that's why I'm asking.

Aww. 💕This video makes me miss my short bangs. I would have bangs just shorter than my brows. It opens my face just enough and the blunt bangs look balanced on my face. I grew them out because of Covid. I have to wear a cap and face shield at my work and the they would cover and mess up the bangs if I had them.
