  • In Episode 4 of ART ISLAND, Zsofin Sheehy joins painter Michelle Nyberg in a few of her favourite places around the island- her outdoor studio, the Sandpiper shoreline, and the Hornby Community Hall. In parallel, we are taken on a journey through Michelle's creative career, one in which she has honed her creative process of absorbing the beautiful details of the world and translating them into paintings characterized by striking movement, colour and whimsy. Michelle credits much of her artistic development to living on Hornby Island, which has opened up opportunities for her to immerse herself in nature, tune into her intuition, and connect with a wide variety of viewers and appreciators through her work.
    [About Michelle Nyberg]
Michelle Nyberg was born and raised in Vancouver BC and has called Hornby Island home since 1999. She studied art at Langara College in Vancouver and NSCAD in Halifax, and went on to have a career in ceramics and then designing and building tiny homes on wheels. Since 2019, she has put her creative energy into experimenting, learning and finding her way with acrylic paint as well as other mixed media. Her paintings are impressions of her island home-details stored in her memory from 20 years of observing the land and sea, mixed with imagination, experimentation and play. Michelle has held five solo shows at Hornby Island’s beautiful Community Hall and has also been part of several group shows on Hornby, Courtenay, Coquitlam, online and most recently at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.

Wow Michelle is the 2nd artist I've heard in the last two days say that they had an experience in art school where art had to be angsty (Rex Ray being the other one saying art in university had a preoccupation with being dark and ugly) and he wanted to make things that were beautiful and I see Ms. Nyberg's gentle spirit wanting to do the same. The world has enough ugliness, let's edify life with our creativity

Wow the cinematography of these films are absolutely stunning! I really related to everything that was said but alas I’m a frustrated artist trapped working in an office every day. 😲 I firmly believe that my day will come. Films like these helps to keep the dream alive! I adore this one! ❤❤❤

@@ng5265 I made art with repurpose items at 90%. I started playing with sticks I found, textiles...then some friends and family started to gift me their unnused craft supplies and now I learn how to do oil painting with a friend (I teach her how to embroidery and she teach me oil painting tecnique). Please, follow your heart♥

The only problem with this series is that you could have also showcased MORE of their completed art at the beginning or the end.... I don't know these artists or their work, those little teases weren't enough to know who you will fall in love with!

Just came across these beautiful films, Anne Ngan and this one, and as a rural BC full-time artist-introvert I really resonate with so much of their experience, and really enjoy the way you have filmed these, with such sensitivity. I'll be watching more.
