- In this week's video I'm out testing a possible new camera set up. Maybe it's finally time to upgrade.
I have the micro 4/3rds OM Systems OM1 Mark II and a trio of lenses to check out and I'm playing around with some wildlife and landscape images to see if this is gear I want to buy.
Find out what I think as well as my reasons for looking into this system and.... How I've been able to get my hands on it for a few days
I hope you'll enjoy the video.

Hello Ralph. I made the change from Canon to OM a year ago for exactly the same reasons as you and have no regrets. I’m very happy with the gear and results and the lower weight is definitely an advantage. In addition, the online support, advice and education from OM is excellent. I’m sure that if you go down the OM route you won’t regret it! Thanks again for all your excellent videos.
Good to hear you've been happy with the change. Glad you enjoy the videos. Thank you for watching and commenting
I borrowed the 150-600 with test and wow and then bought it. I’ve been an Olympus/OM user for about 10 years. Welcome aboard!
That does look like a nice lens, a bit heavy for what I want though. Thank you for watching and commenting
Go for it Ralph. I have the OM-1 mark 1. My longest lens is the 40-150 f2.8 (80-300 FF equivalent). I have a 25mm (50mm) f1.8 and it’s so small and light. I have other great lenses small and lightweight compared to FF. Plus features like pro capture, live ND, etc make it a wonderful experience. You won’t go wrong with it.
Good to hear you like the system. Some of the features seem really intriguing. Thank you for watching and commenting .
Recently purchased the OM1 MK2 with the 12-40 f2.8 pro and the 90mm macro f3.5 to start with and am absolutely loving it. Unfortunately you will always get the haters who tell you 20.4 megapixels is not enough but to be honest some of my best shots and largest prints to date were taken with a Nikon D300 which was only 12megapixels. Great video as always.
Glad you are liking your kit. I'm not too worried about megapixels, 20 is actually plenty and there's all sorts of options for enlarging if you need to. I used to have some really big prints shot on a 12 MP D5000. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching and commenting
Glad you have got to try before you buy, great to see camera companies offering this , its a great way to see if it works for your needs. Some nice images there mate, looking forward to hearing how you get on over the three days with it .
It's nice to be able to try kit out rather than relying on reviews. Glad you liked the images. Thank you for watching and commenting
Yes, we've heard about the flooding in Spain. Hoping things will get back to normal there. Some of my friends in my camera club have the OM system (Olympus) for some of the same reasons as you, light weight. I will say no matter what camera system one gets those telephotos will have a bit a weight to them. I also understand the OM system has some great time lapse features. One of my friends uses hers to do star trails. She said it was easy to do star trails on that camera. I hope you enjoy the test run. Love those images of the egret. Thanks for sharing!!!
The flooding has been terrible in some areas, thankfully we have not been affected. Some of the features on the OM Systems are very interesting, the 100-400 is surprisingly light and well balanced. Thank you for watching and commenting
Best of luck with your tryout Ralph. I still have the original digital OM-D 1 that I charge up and take for a spin now and then and still enjoy the experience. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
The tryout is interesting and the gear really does seem nice. Thank you for watching and commenting and have a great week yourself
Great video, I have a number of friends who changed to this gear and they are very happy, thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it Adrian and good to hear you now people that like the kit. Thank you for watching and commenting
Great way to check out a new camera for you before paying out the money - go for it and look forward to thoughts and review on quality and price. Many thanks for sharing your work and look forward to the next video
It is a good program and gives you a chance to really try the kit. Thank you for watching and commenting Shaun and have a great week
A very capable and lightweight system. I always liked the OM cameras but I suggest you try it out in low light to check the AF and noise performance. The Z8 might be sounding an overkill but I would also advise to test it out Ralph. The Z glass is simply amazing and there are lenses that are not heavy at all.
Good points to consider, much appreciated Thanos. Thank you for watching and commenting
Hi Ralph, oh I didn't know you could do that, that is pretty cool. Strangely enough, I've just bought myself a new camera. My set up was pretty old and I wanted to try something new. Still sticking with Canon but got me a newer camera and a wide angle lens! I am charging the battery as we speak and I'm gonna go out tomorrow and test it out!
Loved your video as usual. Awesome content. Look forward to the next one 👍
It is a good service from OM Systems, means you can really try things out. Have fun out shooting with your new camera. Thank you for watching and commenting
Interesting idea. It seems the OM System kit is generally well received although cropping scope is limited. That wouldn't bother me but I guess it all depends on the use to which photos are put. These days we can get good sized prints from not that many megapixels.
I have rarely found people who regret switching to the M43 system except for certain specialist uses. I have no concerns about the megapixels. Thank you for watching and commenting
Hey Ralph, just my personal opinion as something who has been shooting Olympus since 2019 (moved over from Canon), I'd recommend the 40-150 f2.8 over the 100-400. That's based on my experience, I found a noticeable difference between the two in image quality. I don't know if I had a bad copy of the 100-400, but I didn't like it - but take that with a grain of salt. The 40-150 has internal focussing, so doesn't extend, and feels much better balanced to me.
Best of luck whatever you decide.
The 40-150 does look nice, food for thought maybe. Thank you for watching and commenting
Hey Ralph, been a while, it is always fun to try out possible new set ups with regard to cameras, even if you don´t end up buying it, weight is def an important issue as we get older, especially if you plan on walking longer distances to get photos, and what you never want to do is cause yourself injury just not to make a change in your photography material, so hope you like this new, lighter and smaller camera, and it helps you out in the long run, especially if your photo quality is not hindered, take care mate and hope you were not affected by the DANA too much.
Hi, good to hear from you. I was thinking about you when the DANA hit, wondering if you were in an area that was having problems. Hope you're OK. We have been spared any issues here thankfully. Thank you for watching and commenting
@@RalphGoldsmith My town wasn´t hit, but we have friends in nearby towns that were in the middle of it, we have spent two weekends there helping clean up, what a disaster, so glad you werent affected, take care Ralph.
Always fun to play around with new toys !! To me it seemed that the images in the first series of bird close-ups were rather "soft". Not sure whether it was a result of the AF system, the lens, or something else in the settings and/or post-processing. I am also looking at upgrading my kit (or rather expanding as I will not get rid of my Nikon D500). I was very much leaning toward the Nikon Z6iii (full frame but relatively light) but for my wildlife photography, I am now more and more convinced I want the Z8....... but am not sure I can justify the "investment" at this point. I would think that the Z6iii might be a good option for you as well. All these things come down to personal choices though. For me, staying with Nikon also means I cn continue to use my lenses. Good luck with the quest!!
It was fun to have a play. The first images (Coots) were not as sharp as I would have liked, this was mostly down to some mistakes I made. All of the other images were sharp even viewed at 200%. I hope you continue to enjoy whatever kit you choose to use. Thank you for watching and commenting
Hymm Ralph, great vlog and and great sort of review from this camera. At my end and after you editing the images and the quality looked really nice. But the big question is WIBI (would i buy it) time will tell so look forward to next weeks episode, in the mean time take care and have a great week.
Glad you enjoyed it Jim, image quality was a concern but looked good, more testing would be required before a decision is made, hence the second video. Thank you for watching and commenting and have a great week
I shoot M43 and I use Topaz to upscale the images. It may not be for everyone, but this suits my purposes.
Hi Ralph, sounds like you made your decision already…if not, you might still want to try out the R7 with RF 10-18, 18-150 and 100-400.
I must admit the computational and some other features on the OM Systems do look interesting but the Canon combination you mention does look good (although the Sigma 10-18 that has recently become available for the RF mount looks a good alternative for the wide end). Thank you for watching and commenting
Not sure where you are but the Fuji is around £700 cheaper than the OM 1 II although with cashback offers from OM System at the moment it is now around £300 more expensive.
The Fuji was on my list of possibles, looks like a nice set up. Thank you for watching and commenting
Hi Ralph, how did you go holding the big lens steady?
It was surprisingly easy. The lens is not too heavy and very well balanced. Plus the IS seems to help a lot. Thank you for watching and commenting
@RalphGoldsmith FYI. If you like the OM-1, just wait a little bit. OM System have committed to announcing a high-end camera before 2025. Rumours are thin, but it might be an OM-5 Mkii. If this is true, you may find that the new camera has many of the OM-1 features, but with substantially less weight.
@@petermcginty3636 Interesting. I hadn't heard about that. Thanks for letting me know (although the OM1 is already pretty light)
