    Craziest fall I ever took was actually on grass. I was lulled into a sense of security because it was grass but it was crazy steep grass. Once I fell I really picked up speed. I ended up falling off a drop and landing in a tree. Moral of the story - never let your guard down.

    When I'm introducing new mountaineers to climbing on a moderate slope with an ax, it's always interesting how unnatural it is for people. Deliberately plunging an ax rather than just placing it to gently lean on and thoughtfully engaging as many crampon points as possible is a conscious effort for most amateurs. And about the criticism the camera man is getting for clearly verbalizing to "ARREST" will prepare the newcomers for when they are all roped up together and someone falls. Then the whole rope team goes into arrest position to stop the falling climber, either down a slope or into a crevasse.

When we arrived back at our camping, the lady told us she was happy to see us since she just heard about a death on the Eiger on the radio and she knew we were up there. She then told us it was apparently somebody with a parachute. Kind of weird knowing that someone we might just have seen a couple hours ago just smashed into the ground from up there...

    None of it made sense until he turned the camera around.
    Edit people are sharing their stories, here's mine.
    I fell 40ft off the edge of a limestone quarry after sliding 10ft so I had picked up a lot of speed before going over. Should never have been there. I saw a ledge coming towards me very quickly as I was falling. I presumed that would stop me. I was wrong. Bounced off the ledge and fell the other 20ft head first luckily there was lots of scree on the bottom and I put out my hands and it kinda cushioned the impact. Thankfully I had no head injuries but it left me with life changing injuries.
    The ledge I collided with on the way down broke my heelbone, ankle and 3 metatarsal on my left foot and broke my ankle on my right foot. I had to wear a special kinda boot for 2 weeks in the hospital. It inflated every 20 seconds to squeeze my foot because they couldn't get the swelling to go down before they put on a cast. The pain for those two weeks was excruciating. Broken bones getting squeezed all day and night for 2 bloody weeks.
    Life lesson learned. Don't be show off and always have a moustache for maximum protection while climbing and in bed.

Four days latter descending a mountain in a blizzard my leg fell through and into a void in the snow pitched me head first downhill with a thousand foot drop, the training reflex(and wanting to live) kicked in immediately and with my upper body weight over the axe the axe bit swung me up hill and stopped me..... Do you arrest by slamming the axe in to the ground? Or is it a gentle thing where you can change the angle so stop slowly? Obviously not a climber here just interested in the "science" of it I guess. I can imagine that maybe stopping too fast...you could lose grip on the axe?

    • @OmmerSyssel
      @OmmerSyssel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's essential braking the fall as fast as possible, before speed becomes an issue.
      There's a strap on the axe, supposed to hold you by the wrist.

    What's crazy is I figured out what self arrest is just by reading the sentence it's used in. Just like school taught us lol. I knew he had to stop and secure (or arrest in other words), and it obviously had to be done by him (which is why the term self is also used). Amazing doesn't everyone agree? 😁😁
