    What a wonderful positive (all your episodes are positive) film. I shared your joy when you got the water and the gift. It was just such a fun episode and for those of us who cannot get on our boats to work on them, very uplifting. I’m sorry that I have seen all your episodes now, but I think I will start watching them all over again. Simply outstanding. I cannot thank you enough.

    I’ve enjoyed your episodes. It’s nice to see people my age cruising. Please consider visiting us here in Cape Cod Bay this summer. Pandemic permitting, we’re celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the landing of the Mayflower.

    Nice to see you two making the most of the quarantine time and being inventive when it comes to cooking with driftwood! Here in Alaska, we sometimes use a wood called Alder, which adds a wonderful taste to foods, especially to smoked salmon. Hey, the gillnets there are much like they are here, except our gillnet fleet is made up of large commercial boats that set very long nets during the salmon runs and they also put a large float and flag at the end of the net, with one end attached to their large commercial fishing boats. Easy to see the net that way, just look for the boat and then scan backwards from there. Sometimes in the smaller passes and fjords here, there can be several boats with nets set in all directions and a good skipper has to find the ends of each one and navigate around all of them like a maze! Binoculars are a must! Nice to see things are improving in Spain. Here in the U.S., they'll probably start relaxing the quarantine restrictions a little bit next week but I'm retired so I come/go as I please (wearing an N95 mask and surgical gloves). Cheers to you both. I did my first 2 night/3 day trip of the year last weekend and saw a seal, a sea otter, and two humpback whales! Here's a short video from my channel, where you can hear the whales exhale and then inhale. Can't see them very well but the audio came out great because my boat was shut off and it's every quiet here when you're away from town and other boats. Looking forward to another excellent video from you two. The quality of your videos is top shelf! th-cam.com/video/2eseLyNReQc/w-d-xo.html

    Absolute joy watching you guys, a real treat...one question: Do you ever worry about leaving your dinghy and outboard on the beach when you are shopping?..I'd be paranoid of it being nicked (someone may already have asked this question and if so sorry to double up)

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's always a worry. we always lock the outboard to the dinghy (it's the outboards that people want to nick. And we do have a long wire with two eyes in it to lock the dinghy if there's something to lock it to. Actually with the new dinghy I'm going to cut a piece of our old stainless steel anchor chain to use. In the more remote places without vehicle access to the coast (which is most places we go) you're pretty safe because unless you have a boat to take it to you're not going to be able to carry it away.Maybe we're all paranoid, you very rarely hear of dinghys being stolen.

    Her system is a lot safer than mine. I collect rainwater off the deck but I won’t open the rain catcher there is any risk of a wave salting our water tank. Having the setup higher up is a safer way to make sure waves don’t spray into your rain supply.

    One of the best rain water catchment methods I've seen, was to use a dinghy to catch the water & attach a hose to the drain hole to pipe it into the tank. (It was actually for a garden on land.)
    You'd want to have a very clean dinghy though.

      Sailing Cadoha ...sailing Atticus released a video where they were going to sail to an inhabited island in Panama, but now the government is not even allowing people to even leave the areas where they have their boats. Which is bizarre because they would had been even more isolated on an inhabited island/reef, than where they’re currently at.

    Glad to see you both doing o.k. We thought we were doing o.k in Tasmania, but recently had an outbreak in the N.W of the State which resulted in the closing of two hospitals. Re rain water catching, we don't have scuppers but drain holes in our deck.(One one each side) We can plug these and when the water level rises above the water inlet ,we can open this and allow the rainwater to run in. Unfortunately we had our dog on board, so the thought of drinking diluted dog urine was not appealing. (We prefer it straight every time! Ha Ha etc!) Cheers, Rob.

    I'm commenting on this video as it's the latest but so far have only watched your boat walk-around and I'm hooked. With regard to that video I really have to thank you for your financial transparency. It makes the videos real ... could I do that ? Yes/no. Then the dreaming can start. You seem very similar to some friends of ours, sold a house, bought a flat for some income and like you they can choose to top up with some work (in the financial field). One slightly techie question (is techie a word 🤔) I loved the led lights/different colours etc. Was that easy to fit and where did you find them? Sorry if this should be posted back on THAT video but I'm not sure how new comments on old videos appear. Just subscribed 👍

    • @svfairisle

      I got them all from Amazon actually, very easy to fit as they are 12volt but come with mains transformers so I just cut that off and wire them direct to the boats 12v system. I will make a video on lighting soon as I'v found a few different lighting options that are really good for boats now.

    "We are a social people" Correct. However we are also all unique and different. This means not all of we are a social people. Some few are quite the opposite, with even fewer of those being hermits. I personally am not an extrovert but I do enjoy being around people and the social aspect. Yet I am also just as content being alone for extended periods of time. And out in nature, especially out at sea, is great and ideal for that. Besides, while alone and solo, they will have some form of limited contact with today's modern tech. So its not quite as bad as it would have been. Even if that is with mostly race organizers, human contact is still contact. Not sure how I would fair for so long though. I would look forward to it initially, but would also worry about mo's later. Bit of a mixture I suppose. I know overall I would be fine the entire time but yea would have mixture of both feelings.

      Talking to the guys that did it most struggled more than they expected. Kevin Fairbrother for instance who has climbed Everest 3 times, gave up in Cape Verde after a month not coping with being on the boat alone. I don't think theres much difference in voice contact either. Yes they have a weekly call by sat phone to race control, but thats all they get. They cant use it for anything else and the Ham radio network is just not setup like it used to be. It's much more difficult now to have a SSB call patched through to the phone network which is what the '68 skippers were doing.

      @@svfairisle I can agree to all of that. And I am sure some of those were boasting or trying to convince themself too. But that is not to say that someone would have no or very lil issues. It is something that you can't fathom unless you have been there. I know from personal experience that after 30 - 45 days, even with limited contact from those of us onboard, we all started to become a bit loopy. So I can fathom it a lil, well enough to know personally might have issues over lengthy period of time like over half year if not sooner. Again have no actual experience being alone for even a month, but have some idea and pretty sure would be ok for shorter periods of that time frame.
      Edit: I meant to add that those fooling themself were do themself no favours. It is better to mentally prepare for such a thing as best as you can. Which I suspect was the main purpose of having it in your video.

    Like you guys, I am pleased to hear that Spain seems to be managing the fight against COVID-19.
    Grouped within the construction industry, marinas and boat yards (in spit of extra work relating to health and safety rules) will slowly get back to some form of normality.
    However, up until now I believe your problem of marina access has been, as much to do with the social distancing, lock down as it has, border control, to regulate movement of people.
    Most, if not all EU countries have, since the outbreak of the pandemic, recently, reintroduced these border controls and I believe it will be sometime before Spain relaxes this total shut down and agrees to reinstate free movement within the Schengen region. Even then, Schengen will probably keep its external borders closed to international travel until well after the summer.
    Every port and marina is a source of external Schengen control and I assume entering any Spanish marina for the foreseeable future will be fraught with problems. Your last port of call, I believe was Cartagena, and if you haven’t wandered outside of Spanish waters, you are technically still in Spain, we can only hope that the Spanish authorities recognise this.
    But sailing from a Spanish port to a French port would be even more complicated until the Schengen region returns to its former self. Unfortunately, you will just have to continue with the beach barbecues and the drinking of inexpensive, but good, Spanish wine. Not forgetting, you still have the equally fine foods and wines of France, to look forward too.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the marina issues are just down to interpretation of the law by individual marinas. Some are taking the directives issued by the government at face value and banning anyone entering their marinas no matter what. Others are taking the, in my view more sensible and definitely more sea faring approach, of upholding their duty of care to seafarers.
      I for one will remember the marinas who actually understand the sea and avoid the ones that are businesses with no regard for mariners.
      I think you're right about movement across borders. We arn't expecting to cross borders until at least late summer. Our best hope of getting some sailing in is being able to explore the Balearics. I really hope the Spanish allow movement within Spanish waters, not only for us but because I think businesses in the islands will not survive a dead summer season.
      We could easily spend a summer sailing the Balearics, my father lived on a boat in Mallorca for over 30 years so I know some parts quite well.
      Steve

      @Sailing Fair Isle Steve, I am in the South of France, so I am lucky in the respect that once the border is lifted I can drive to Spain, whilst still exercising social distancing. UK based friends would need to fly, personally I would steer clear of group gatherings, for me, airports and ferries are taboo, until a vaccine has been found.
      I agree with your sentiments, however, each region of Spain seems to have its own interpretation of laws. I can only hope all of the Spanish territory including the Balearics returns to the Schengen rules asap allowing free movement of EU and Schengen citizens. If this happens at the beginning of June I will return to Spain and head out to the Balearics by early July. I believe, I mention before that we would look out for you if you spend the summer there, our boats name is COCO we are a Jeanneau Yachts 51, you never know, we might pop up on your AIS.

      @@svfairisle I am not aware of all Marinas, but I think most if not all are following guidelines issued by the Government via Guardia Civil. Recreational boats are not permitted to enter or leave port and I think in the majority most seafarers are respecting that. Not least to ensure their own safety (ie not wanting to get trapped offshore without safe haven). This does not avoid a few unfortunate exceptions (maybe like yourselves) who got caught out prior to lock down.
      From Marinas perspective many are concessions gifted to the Marina by the Authorities... So I am not sure they want a black mark against them. Compliance is a big thing where ever you are and they are not likely to want to lose their concession..
      From the anchoring up perspective, there was an example reported in Spanish Press here in Valencia a few days ago. A Spanish National who had decided to spend lock down at anchor off Formentera. He had been there several weeks before the local council were aware of his presence off a deserted island in the area and the Guardia Civil approached him and ordered him back to his own port (Valencia). He had a mooring there so this was a return to home port under order of authorities.
      Anyhow hope you find a solution soon or at least your complications are a minimum.
      Stay safe
      Stuart
