- The Philadelphia Zoo, located in the Centennial District of Philadelphia, on the west bank of the Schuylkill River, is the first true zoo in the United States. It was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on March 21, 1859, but its opening was delayed by the Civil War until July 1, 1874. The zoo opened with 1,000 animals and an admission price of 25 cents. For a brief time, the zoo also housed animals brought over from safari on behalf of the Smithsonian Institution, which had not yet built the National Zoo.
The Philadelphia Zoo is one of the premier zoos in the world for breeding animals that are difficult to breed in captivity. The zoo also works with many groups around the world to protect the natural habitats of the animals in their care.
The zoo is 42 acres (17 ha) and the home of nearly 1,300 animals, many of which are rare and endangered. Special features include a children's petting zoo, a paddleboat lake, a rainforest themed carousel, a ropes course, and many interactive and educational exhibits.

Nice to see another zoo video! Keep up the good work.
This Roadtrip was much heavier on theme parks. I tried to fit in as many zoo's and aquariums as I had the time for. I'm glad you enjoyed my tour.
Growing up in Philly I always went to the zoo now that I moved haven’t been there in years this brought back a lot of memories hope you enjoyed it
I really had a great time, I like how they kept some of the older stuff along with the new.
@@TomsRoadTrippin yes when a lot of the same stuff was there when I was a kid in the early 2000s
@@ClutchstewartHave you ever been to the Lehigh Valley Zoo Pittsburgh Zoo or Zoo America before
That area you mention at 35:10 was where the old bald eagle exhibit used to be years ago. I don’t know if they have plans for it now
Thank You for explaining that, I was just really curious as to what was there in the past.
There is even an airport called Philadelphia airport
Great video Tom!!! We had a great time there last year April 2023 when taking my only grandson! It's changed a lot since we took my eldest granddaughters about nine years ago. Live horse rides are gone, but he had a great time watching all the animals. At four years old, he climbed the rope and enjoyed the gigantic playground area with the big kids. All the extras are discounted now with membership and using our phone with the codes in the app was the new way to go! It was convenient but I as grandma was initially on a bit of a learning curb...lol. The new Dinosaur Exhibits (opened last year) was also really great!
That's great to hear you and your grandson had such a fun time. It seems almost everywhere you go everything is digital now. Thanks for sharing your adventure ☺️

I'm glad you enjoyed, the 2nd part will be out Thursday.
@@TomsRoadTrippin great we'll be watching
@@msdecker11 I hope you enjoy Part Two
Very nice zoo and the flowers and nice to see the animals don't look very busy and the tunnel for the animals to go round instead of in one place
The tunnels around the zoo was a nice addition to the zoo. Gives the different animals an opportunity to be outside. That was one of my favorite aspects of the zoo.

Unfortunately I didn't get to see the big cats using the trails I did see several other animals in it throughout the day.
why is the small mammal house closed
It's closed for renovation it seems. Most of the animals inside are moved to other area's.
I noticed you missed the Wings of Asia was that Aviary closed
Yes, that area wasn't available during my visit.
awesome video tom and I agree looks can be deceiving I actually thought this was a small zoo this looks like a very good sized zoo. looking forward to part 2
Thank You Zachary, always good to hear from another zoo junkie 😁
I've been to this so many times growing up right outside of Philly, definitely a big zoo it's awesome!

Also they used to have Okapis but got rid of them too
I love those animals, looks like a combination of different animals.
@@TomsRoadTrippin I dont blame you
I've Been There Before with my family while vacationing in Philadelphia when i was a kid
I jope my tour brought back fond memories from that trip when you we're a kid. 😊
@@TomsRoadTrippin yeah

A very big zoo
It is, lots of walking, but it's worth it.
I remember going there on a field trip long ago when I was a young child and thinking a small cat in an exhibit was a house cat, only learning years later it was a black footed cat
Yeah there are several species of big cats that resemble house cats. The Bobcat is one that I always enjoy seeing. Thanks for sharing your memory from your childhood.
Have you ever been to the Lehigh Valley Zoo Pittsburgh Zoo or Zoo America before
I was there like 6 or 7 months ago
Really 😮
Have you ever been to the Lehigh Valley Zoo Pittsburgh Zoo or Zoo America before
You should have done a livestream. The community would have superchatted you a hat
I never thought of doing that, perhaps I'll do just that sometime on my next roadtrip.
@@TomsRoadTrippin is ur nxt. Rd. Trip gonna b round Florida
@Trey S Yes Trey, there are several places I'm planning to visit early next year in Florida.
@@TomsRoadTrippin what’s your big summer trip? I’m hoping to swing through the panda zoos in early June.
Also did you know they added Vulturine Guineafowls to their collection
Those are nice looking birds, very colorful.
Did you hear that all the Meerkats there died
Oh I don't like your death comments, it makes me sad 😢
@@TomsRoadTrippinsorry about that
A good sized zoo. Habitats are pretty nice.
Likely, they may be renovating the exhibit or doing maintenance work. They have their reasons. They have to remain AZA compliant at all times. And nothing goes unnoticed by their inspectors, even the smallest things. ZAA is the same way.
The zoo was bigger than I first thought. They have a fantastic variety of animals to enjoy.
They used to have Aardvarks but they moved them all to the Memphis Zoo
It's not unusual for zoos to move animals to other facilities. Hopefully they will be with others or to a better habitat.
Did you know that they used to have Elephants but they got transferred to the Maryland Zoo
I was actually surprised they didn't have elephants.
@@TomsRoadTrippinthey have actually been talking about wanting to bring them back in the future
aguara guazu
Philadelphia has a free zoo. Kensington Ave.
I didn't know about the free zoo when I was there. I'll see if I can fit a visit into my next trip. Thanks 😊
@@TomsRoadTrippin It’s a joke. Don’t really go. That street is a known “open air drug market” and is full of people in a “zombie, vegetation” weeble wobble from heroin and fentanyl use. Do a search in TH-cam and you will see.
@@wallybacon22 Yeah Humanity can really suck sometimes. That's the reason I prefer animals most of the time.
☝️🤓
Did you know that the Philadelphia Zoo used to have Polar Bears but they got euthanized
I wasn't aware they used to have polar bears.
That's ok their store is a bit pricey. My stuffed animal with a zoo name vest on it was $20.00. Even with my discount, things were a bit pricey. But you do what you can support. Have to go back again someday. Don't look up. you may get a golden shower. 😆 The animals going across above you. But it is so cool. One of our AAP members won a trip to Africa. So she and two other friends went fully paid for by the Cheetah Conservation Fondation. Now that's a trip of a life time.
For the bird park in my country, they're giving away tickets for $10 for visitors to visit it one last time before it merges with the Zoo, Night Safari & River Safari next year in Jan. I'm gonna miss seeing it at its original place😢.
Getting towards the ending of that roadtrip made me start to conserve my money more. This zoo was incredibly expensive compared to most of the others I've been too. Still a fantastic zoo which I very much enjoyed.
@@TomsRoadTrippin so which is the best zoo you have visited?
The Henry Doorly Zoo and San Diego Zoo are my two favorite zoo's.
