I think ABBA is in the same category. He wrote and performed his songs. He acted in big box office movies and he even danced. I can't think of a single artist that has ever done that and been this popular and remembered. Every other artist doesn't even come close to Elvis.
He was a good singer, even a great singer, but what he really was was an absolutely brilliant showman. The whole package coming together is why he remains, now and forever, "The King."

I am so glad you picked up on the fact that while he was always performing and singing and doing Athletics stuff physically, he was always messing with the audience and his band members just to keep it fun. But you noticed that he is essentially also the band director. He communicates stuff with his body language. There are some TH-cam videos of rehearsals from this era, and you can see how professional and serious everybody is but they also have a lot of laughs. But that was arranged all this stuff himself. They were all great musicians but he really did arrange the stuff and this was coming out of a era in music history where especially in jazz and so forth you had band leaders. They would stand up there and lead the band just like a conductor would do with an orchestra. But he did it all, he did it all at once. And he made it fun.

I was working in the Memphis Fire Dept. dispatching office the afternoon of 8/16/1977..we got a call from Graceland(maybe early afternoon)...they wanted an ambulance stat....within maybe an hour they said they were transporting to Baptist on Union Ave.....within 2 - 3 hrs we were getting calls from around the world wanting particulars. sad day for Memphis, and the world.

The Vegas shows in 1970 were filmed for the docu "That's The Way It Is". This video is from August, 12, Midnight Show 1970. You can tell it (f.e.) by the white suits he's been wearing this season. In 1969 he's been wearing mostly dark blue or black suits. Cissy Houston was only five weeks in 1969 with Elvis and the Sweets. She told it herself in many interviews. You can find some here on YT. She had a extra contract on her own.
