I think ABBA is in the same category. He wrote and performed his songs. He acted in big box office movies and he even danced. I can't think of a single artist that has ever done that and been this popular and remembered. Every other artist doesn't even come close to Elvis.
Even though it was the saddest day for Sir EPs fans and people who loved and still do today's when he passed, to me he is still young at 42 forever. Just know that he never performed the same song exactly the same way twice, so don't hesitate to watch different versions of the same song.

But you noticed that he is essentially also the band director. He communicates stuff with his body language. There are some TH-cam videos of rehearsals from this era, and you can see how professional and serious everybody is but they also have a lot of laughs. But that was arranged all this stuff himself. They were all great musicians but he really did arrange the stuff and this was coming out of a era in music history where especially in jazz and so forth you had band leaders. They would stand up there and lead the band just like a conductor would do with an orchestra. But he did it all, he did it all at once. And he made it fun.

I was working in the Memphis Fire Dept. dispatching office the afternoon of 8/16/1977..we got a call from Graceland(maybe early afternoon)...they wanted an ambulance stat....within maybe an hour they said they were transporting to Baptist on Union Ave.....within 2 - 3 hrs we were getting calls from around the world wanting particulars. sad day for Memphis, and the world.
