I've made a project some years ago for an AI that drives in mario kart 64 and I had some data about it already (I could find some stuff from rena micro500 and others), but nothing like mario 64 for example, it was kind of hard to pick up ram addresses and rewrite them to do something or map custom stuff, looking at this just makes me really happy to see how much work its inside , congrats

Awesome work. Kudos! I just had the coolest idea. How easy or hard would it be to implement different vehicles such as bike, motorcycle, plane, train, bus and so on? If this could be done, that'd be an awesome addition to the game. Imagine low flying planes like in Wipeout but in Mario Kart. Motorcycles could also be done, but bicycles would require additional character animation for leg movements and stuff. But it would make for a fun game. Imagine, Tour De Mario. 😀
We've looked into 3D models briefly and will eventually come back to it. We're also looking into new ways to add 2D characters ontop of the original 8 by modifying existing toolsets. Lots of exciting things on the far horizon with Custom Characters!

Yes! Litronom, the creator of Amped Up, has been contributing lots of code to the new "Version 5" of the codebase used to power OverKart and Amped Up, and because of their help we've gotten custom music to work without overwriting the existing music tracks. Alongside some other exciting updates, this means every custom level can have their own unique song.
As a complete newbie here. What is a quick list of what I need to do in order to play these mods on a n64 console? I’m guessing start by a hdmi mod.... a quick step by step would be cool to know.
An HDMI mod will probably be pretty difficult to get your hands on let alone install, but thankfully you definitely won't need it. You should look into getting either an official Everdrive from Krikkz, or the Chinese bootlegs called the ED64+ or Super64 cartridges. These will have SD cards where you can put any Nintendo 64 ROM to play. You will need your own copy of Mario Kart 64 (U) [!].z64 , you then apply the patch in the download to this ROM and the final output would go onto the SD card. Google "IPS" patcher or use flips.exe If you're very worried about video quality or have issues playing on a modern TV, you should look into a "RetroTink 2x Mini" which sells for about $80 USD right now and works for several retro consoles. I use their 2x Pro device now for all my older game consoles.
I have an issue where the bots are not working at all. I selected "bots" in the multiplayer option and nothing happens when I choose any of the multiplayer modes. I can't get past the character selection screen as the AI isn't doing anything. I wonder if I did something wrong or if maybe it's my version of PJ64 (I'm using the latest dev build downloaded yesterday). I don't want to have to run an old version just for this one single hack when it works with all the others :/ I've applied the patch to an unmodded Mario Kart 64 rom. Everything except the bots seems to work. Any ideas?
Thank you for bringing this up! We're trying to finish up a new, very substantial update and will be sure to fix the bots for the next build. Very sorry for the trouble you've had, hope you've been able to enjoy the mod otherwise.
I played it and let me just say that I love the work that went into this. A few bugs I found were in the second mushroom cup level the jump is impossible. The snow level the jump is only acceptable from the far left. Multiple crashes. You literally see the cpu characters fail and still get first place lol so some of these jump have to be closer to the platforms somehow or we cant make the jumps. I played this on emulator haven't tried it on hardway yet but I imagine its just the same. Great level design I just wish the jumps were achievable and it didnt crash so much.
Ah yeah I suppose all the jumps were tested on 100cc, and I imagine theres a few that dont make it on the 50cc speed level. I'll have to go back and tweak these to make sure they're still accessible on the lower speed points. Surprised to hear about the crashes, I didn't experience any issues when playing through but again had never played on 50CC mode so the AI missing jumps may have caused issues.

Hello! Hope you've been well, I'm so sorry for not seeing this sooner! The currently released version of the OverKart 4 DLC in this video works with the Retrostage carts, I've recently ordered one of the kits to test out specifics on how they work. The ROMS will need to be "padded" in a hex editor to an even 1024kb (1MB), this means adding extra bytes to the end of file. Adding FF bytes to end exactly on an even MB will make these work. Based on new research from this device I've written up and tested code to detect if a Repro cart is being used and disable the game. Unfortunately, these mods are resold for profit by unaffiliated parties, taking advantage of the work we provide for free. This new code will be present in future versions of Mario Kart 64 mods, so on future releases you'll need to contact me again so that I can provide you with a special build.
