The ending was sad because she had a double loss first her father and then the person she loved both died in a forest fire. Her and her mother both had the same fate in losing the man they loved at a young age.

For me, he died in the forest fire. The performance is a tribute to him. But I understand why did they have to end this way. Even if they get married, it is not still a guarantee of a happy ending. Look at Nan Chu's parents, got married and they sired a child, but they didn't have a happy ending too! So this ending suggests that our happy ending in life depends on how we are destined and of course with Divine intervention. So enjoy life while it lasts!
