Listen to the Simon and Garfunkel song from the 60s: The Sound of Silence. Think about cellphones as you listen. “And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made”” “people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening”. Almost prophetic.

When He dealt with the religious leaders of His day , He said , Truly I say to you , before Abraham was , I Am . They took up stones to stone Him , because they knew what He was claiming . I remember way back around 2007/2008, people had flip cell phones and texting started. I was 28/29 years old and had gone back to school at a small-town community college, and after a lunch break a group of us around the same age (so we were never raised on cell phones) were walking back to our class, and I saw my friend walking, face down into her phone, and texting her husband. I knew then that this was messed-up, it wasn’t like excusing yourself to make a call/receive a text, it was texting just barely in its infancy, and people already prioritizing it to the people they were physically with. No more “in the present”. Within a year I was working at a big hospital and all nurses (everyone, really) had phones in their scrub pockets, and would be texting people their entire shift... and it was night shift. About 4 years ago I dumped a smartphone and went back to a flip phone - I have lost every single one of my “friends” because of it. The reality is that most people don’t even know how to have relationships in person anymore - if it’s not through a smartphone, they aren’t interested. Personally, I believe this is dehumanizing and demonic.

Perhaps he expanded on this outside the scope of this video, but there is little in the way of faith here. And we interrupt our prayers to answer the phone, or look at a notification. When we pray, we are in the presence of the Lord Almighty and we answer the phone ! Both ungodly and uncivilized.

*Larry Burkett's book on "Giving and Tithing" drew me closer to God and helped my spirituality. 2020 was a year I literally lived it. I cashed in my life savings and gave it all away. My total giving amounted to 40,000 dollars. Everyone thought I was delusional. Today, 1 receive 85,000 dollars every two months. I have a property in Calabasas, CA, and travel a lot. God has promoted me more than once and opened doors for me to live beyond my dreams. God kept to his promises to and for me*

Imagine people thinking you are just a crazy curmudgeon for seeing clearly..and trying to care for them. I'm not sure how it is in the Jewish tradition, but a lot of Christians have stressed the importance of mental prayer, for example “He who neglects mental prayer needs not a devil to carry him to hell, but he brings himself there with his own hands.” (St. Teresa of Avila)
The way the phone scatters your attention makes it impossible to focus your mind, making mental prayer and meditation impossible. It is especially bad now that the apps have become addictive as explained in this video
