As the theme music suggests, Dumb Street is a parody of every single soap on Aussie TV at the time (although the opening sequence is a parody of the H&A opener at the time)
The main characters of Dumb Street were based on H&A characters. Shelley played by Marg Downey is based on Marilyn Chambers, Jane Turner's character is based on Bobby Simpson, Magda's character is based on Carly Morris, Gina Riley's character Dannii is based on Emma Jackson (who was played by Dannii Minogue). Ramsay St Clinic is a Neighbours reference. Craig Donovan = Craig McLachlan (Neighbours and Home and Away) and Jason Donovan (Neighbours). Donovan appears here in the opening titles sequence. Bob Hatfield and Dr Elliot are references to A Country Practice. Reverend Bob is a reference to E Street.
My mother lived with me between 2021 and 2022 and watched Home and Away religiously. If you take away the laugh track, there’s very little difference. This could be a homage rather than a parody. It’s uncanny.
Many Brits loved the old Australian soaps. But then again Coronation Street has been going for 200 years. So that doesn't say much about British taste.
My Scottish boarder was totally addicted to Neighbours and when she returned home she would phone me regularly to find out what was happening-Britain was months behind Australia😮So I felt compelled to watch it cause she was a good friend-even though I thought Neighbours was absolute crap😢Like all soapies really!!Cheers 😊😊
