the picture is from the first world war. before radar was invented (second world war), they used different mechanisms to "hear" the aircraft coming from afar. these are called sound locators, or acoustic locators. the ones in the picture were said to allow you to visualise the enemy aircraft more easily.

The small-aperture goggles were apparently set so that when the sound was located by turning the head, the aircraft would be visible."
