    The "Styrofoam box without spoon" situation happens so often to us in the uniformed services, that we learnt a way to overcome it: tear one corner off the box cover and use it like a scoop.

      We could start by making our environment more bi/multulingual. Think the Speak Chinese Movement will be disappointed to see that our new & refurbished public buses have replaced the bi-lingual warning labels: "For your safety please stand clear of doors 为安全起见请站离车门" with the monolingual "Stand clear of doors". Their electronic destination signs also no longer display Chinese (except for like 新年快乐), unlike the plastic & metal destination signs/plates or 'destos' they replaced.
      Back in 2013 there was also a backlash when SMRT added Mandarin to its train announcements, being accused of pandering to mainland Chinese here, while others complained that Chinese were being favoured over non-Chinese & that having announcements in all 4 nat'l languages would be too long (although Taiwan manages to do that)

    You have such a beautiful culture and you don’t appreciate it. Yet I see you guys take pride in your inability to speak mandarin. I have a couple of Singaporean friends who are bilingual and I am always amazed at their mastery of both languages. Singaporeans like you dont do the western thing well nor do you do your own culture. Pathetic, the world has changed but apparently these 2 have not. Its just so sad that they take pride in their inability to do something. Other Singaporeans should learn from their mistakes.

    • @pushinghumanstupiditylimits
      @pushinghumanstupiditylimits 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We are Singaporeans, with an incidental Chinese heritage. No matter how much “Chinese-ness” we wish to be, we cannot be like a mainland Chinese. In fact many of them view Singapore Chinese as oddballs and are surprised that we can speak their language & practice some of their cultures, albeit differently. As a multiracial country, we also have mixed marriages and therefore a mix of different cultures, while China is almost homogeneous (though they like to claim that they have many races too, but think about the Han conversion process in Xinjiang 😉).
      Part of the human migration process is the adaptation of cultures, customs and languages over time, to different environments. Most cultures take millenniums to form their own identities. Singapore is only 56, which is like a sperm still swimming and searching. It might or might not hit an ovary, takes form and grows. But it’s ridiculous to expect it has the sameness as its “parents” now.

    • @haileydirks3559
      @haileydirks3559 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@pushinghumanstupiditylimits I believe you missed the whole point here, this comment is not about emulating mainland Chinese but embracing your unique culture, appreciating the language your forefathers speak, be it English, Mandarin, Tamil or Malay. As of lately, young Singaporeans are eager to disassociate themselves from their heritage. Singaporeans competitive edge, bilingualism, is dwindling.
      It is very apparent that your thoughts are frame by western media. Start exposing yourself to the different sides, take the time to explore different cultures and you'll have a well rounded view of the world. I have spent a decade travelling around the borders of China, 2 in Urumqi and the "Han conversion" is something I personally did not witness.
