Saw this on pbs when I was a girl in the 1980s. My mother would let me stay up past my bedtime to watch it because she thought it was such a powerful historical story. It was so much better quality than almost anything I had seen on American tv. Powerful and I remember names and scenes 35+ years later!

Best series I have ever seen to this day. Some time back it took a bit to find someone in Europe to put it on cds that would play here in the States. I still watch it every few years.

I love this show. I taped every episode on video tape, which I still have. We saw it on A&E when they first began broadcasting. I also love Nanny, a show about a nanny in the 1930s.

Have the DVD Box set of Tenko. There are no extras on it. This special is brilliant ! They should re release the box set and put this onto the end of it.

One afternoon in the late 80's while "surfing' the channels, I came upon an extraordinary scene of a group of women arguing in what looked like a barn.
They were filthy, sweaty, they had sores, barely dressed in rags and I thought, "What is this?" By the end of the episode I'd realized that they were prisoners of the Japanese during WW2. I'd thought that, surely, this was a work of fiction. We hadn't learned of this at school. We'd learned about the the Bataan death march, the Burma railway and other atrocities of war, all involving men exclusively. Women were safe, back home, growing Victory gardens, rolling bandages and giving out doughnuts and coffee for the Red Cross. I now have a collection of books written by and about the women who actually lived through this nightmare (Betty Jeffrey's, amongst others). This series opened my eyes to the fact that the history of women has been ignored, minimized and obscured. Thanks to Lavinia Warner, Jill Hyem, Anne Valery and the marvelous cast for this accomplishment. The film, "Paradise Road" and the documentary, "Song of Survival" are well worth watching for anyone interested in this important piece of history.
PS -- when I had my baby in 1991, I named her Jocelyn. Partly because I admired the character but mostly because it's such a beautiful name.

I watched this wonderful Drama from it's inception. My mum and me would watch while father was reading in bed. It was our guilty secret as he was a liberator of the camps and many of his pals were incarcerated. The ones who came back well, never the same. Always, dying early though tropical diseases. When Dad had malaria flair ups the neighbours would bang on the walls. I am now watching reruns on Drama UK. If I had a criticism then the series didn't go far enough. A remake is due and the stories of the Japanese Guards should be incorporated.

    • @ravens-crypt

That’s because Japan isn’t very fond of tenko and what it highlights to this day and because it doesn’t need to be rebooted it’s perfectly

Really enjoyed watching this. They simply do not make drama's as good anymore. It was interesting that they mentioned Secret Army at the beginning, sadly now forgotten due to the first series being lampooned by Allo Allo. Secret Army featured some very strong female characters, particularly Angela Richards as Monique Duchamps and Juliet Hammond-Hill as Natalie Chantrens. Forty years ago today the 4th episode of the third and final series of Secret Army attracted 19.5 million viewers. Imagine that today on a Saturday night! All three series are well worth watching if you haven't see it.
