bloodsling - It's partly because they are tough, but compassionate. Winters are long and hard, and making a living isn't easy. They choose to be there. Saw a TV programme about the air traffic controllers at Gander and how they guided over 200 aircraft down without any incidents. They were the unsung heroes along with the residents of that day!
I love watching stuff like this. As a kindhearted Canadian it truly brings a tear to my eye to see how well the people of Gander represented us on that tragic day. Gander gets all the news stories, but there were aircraft that landed at other airports in cities other than Gander, so thank you to everyone who helped on that day no matter what city you live in. When events are at their worst, people are at their best. It's now 2021 and in about 4 months it will be the 20th anniversary of 911 and I have not forgotten what Canadians did for us.
An amazing story of a small town in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada with a Big Heart ! These Gander residents are truly remarkable and kind. They knew how to organize, procure supplies and feed an army of people and bed them for the night. The Gander airport is known by all airlines as the first point of refuge after crossing the Atlantic if your plane has an emergency. Bless them. Their runways are able to accept any Jumbo jet in the sky. The Town of Gander, Newfoundland will always be remembered with love by the people who landed there. God Bless the good people of Gander always !
Gander is not an affluent town monetarily but it is so affluent in heart. I was there for March break six years ago and Mayor Elliot came for dinner. I am so glad to be Canadian
Proud of Gander, From a Proud Canadian Newfie. Have not been back to the rock for 20 years now, living in Ontario, but miss it a lot, but I also have to mention all the other Provinces that helped out on that terrible day, Nova Scotia, P.E.I.. New Brunswick. also more then a few plane people rented cars and travelled to Quebec and Ontario trying to get over the border to the USA. Newfoundland people are very good people but most Canadians are also very kind people, when I came to Ontario 20 year's ago I had almost nothing, but a lot of strangers helped me, a place to stay, got me a job, and took very good care of me, and I will always be so greatful. It was the first time I really felt I belonged to the Canadian Family, and I am so Proud of being a Canadian and being from Newfoundland.
In honor of the heroic help from this little town, the Lufthansa (that also was affected by the closure of the airspace) named one of its aircrafts "Gander/Halifax". Its an old plane, but I hope they transfer the name to a new one when it gets replaced. I wish that other airlines had paid similar respect towards such generosity.
As someone who has been on a flight that had to emergency land in Gander (not on 9/11 but in 2016) I can say that everyone I encountered there was so incredibly nice!
Thank you Gander, from Brazil, for all your kindness towards your fellow man. There is still much to be grateful to those who, even anonymously, have helped Americans at that moment and those that followed, even if it was with a prayer.
This is why I'm proud to be a Newfie. I may not have grown up in gander, but I was always going to this wonderful town for shopping as the town I grew up in was much, much smaller. I loved going to gander when I was young, and now I'm happily living in this beautiful town with my fiance and my parents are to move in soon as well. I made so many nice memories in this town in the last year of living here, and many more are to come. The people of gander really are amazing, and have welcomed us in to their cozy little town. I may not have been here when 9/11 happened, in fact, I think I was only a couple of years old when it happened, if that. But seeing this video reminds me of how happy and proud I am to be a Newfie.
I was working at the airport that faithful day and I remember very clearly the families on those planes. I have never experienced anything like that. The community came together to help everyone the best we could. was very happy to help those people
As an American (was a Junior in High School at the time) I will never forget 9/11. But vividly remember reading how this town, and many other Canadian towns and cities helped the stranded when all those planes were grounded right after the attacks. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Canada.
The one thing that I feel needs to emphasized with this story is the bus drivers who where striking , they came back to work because that is what Gander, Newfoundland is about and that is what being a Canadian is about
Amazing....my family or their freinds from Gander Gambo, Lewisporte were all on the receiving end of those flights. It did not surprise me one bit all were welcomed, I heard Mrs O'rourkes Irish accent and fears immediately and thought to myself,,,gee whiz , she could not be in better arms in those 4 Days. Impossible. That entire province is the closest in terms of Irish belief systems preserved on the continent. There is a place called Tilting on Fogo Island where My Mother is from where Irish is still spoken and culture as it was hundreds of years ago. Fate has us some times. I really felt for this Lady and her husband. I saw myself and their son in their tears as if it were my parents. so sad. Beautiful people. God Bless you.
Gander originally was an international hub/stopover. In the early days (before the 747), most aircraft did not have the "legs" to make it clear from NYC to London or Paris. Even the 707 and de Havilland Comet could not make the crossing. They would depart NYC and stop in Gander for the full fuel load, and then complete the trip. From the other way, they would have to stop in Gander for a splash of fuel to make it to NYC.
Very inspirational and beautiful to watch. The generosity and humility shown that they in Gander was one of the reasons why humanity won on that terrible day with so much sadness, loss and sense of grief. But Hope kept them through.
Yeah it is. Ironically as a Canadian,it was Tom Brokaw who I learned the story from. But that's a Newfie. they will do anything to help out,and ask for nothing in return.
Thank you to the people of Newfoundland for helping people during my nation’s darkest day, My door is always open to the people of Newfoundland if they ever need it
I have always known how beautiful Newfoundland is with some of the most dramatic Tides and Picture Postcard Perfect Coastal communities. We've heard it stated (The Simpsons most notably), "Canada, America, Jr." No. Our friends to the North are a fine, fine bunch. I've known some Canadians and know it from experience. Those in Gander were literally the tip of the iceberg you might say. Though not personally connected to this tragic event beyond being an American, I will always be thankful that Gander shown the world what "Grace under Fire" really looks like. Bravo, Gander!
I live 90 min. from of Gander. Great video, but just a couple inaccuracies I'd like to point out: - Gander is a town not a city -Gander is landlocked and many of the clips throughout the video featuring the ocean and a bridge were actually taken in Twillingate (2 hours from Gander) not Gander Itself.
Gander always gets the most attention for this because it's extremely large runway for an otherwise small airport could take the most aircraft but remember this happened in both St. John's and Stephenville too.
Well it was a really large airport made in 1930s and became super useful during WW2. Ironically it was the jumbo jet that almost killed the airport. And it was the airport that saved the jumbos that day.

I love this story but I would like to point out that all the scenery shots (the van driving over the bridge, the wharf with the little shed, boat and flag, the shot of the ocean and rocks, etc.) are all from Twillingate Island which is an hour and a half away from Gander. The bridge is called Tickle Bridge and it connects the north and south sides of the island. The wharf belongs to a Mr. Horwood and the ocean shot is from a tourist rest stop near French Beach (Durrell, Twillingate Island).
I know that Canada has gained a bit of a bad reputation under Trudeau, but this video makes me proud to be Canadian. Way to go Gander, you make Canadians proud!
Said by a non Progressive Conservative. Trudeau speaks perfect English and French. He is well thought of in Europe and throughout the world. He is not Donald Trump which makes him a winner in the eyes of most people. And he is not addicted to KFC. Justin Trudeau is a perfect contrast to Conservative Donald Trump.
All of Canada did this it's just that the bigger cities absorbed it a lot better,, I was in the city of 1.3 million people when it happened and all day on the radio they were begging for translators of every conceivable language to come to the airport because they literally had thousands of people who were not supposed to land in Calgary Landing there who were stranded and didn't speak English. When the United States shut down the air traffic we bailed them out and our reward for that was fighting against perimeter defense, Bush was fighting tooth-and-nail to do a backdoor takeover of Canada,, yup that's what no one talks about when they talk about 9/11 no one talks about all the American fighter jets flying around Canada,, they started a war on the other side of the country afterwards all the propaganda came out afterwards perimeter defense was the first thing the United States talked about before those planes had even landed.....
I would never wish another day like 9/11 to happen to our country again, but I do yearn to see us united like we were on 9/12. 20 years later and we are now on the brink of another civil war.
Oh, Gander. Been there just once (June 2016) for a couple of hours to refuel before crossing the Atlantic back home to Prague. A nice experience of an empty terminal, opened just for us (a diplomatic flight) in the middle of the night. I'll forever remember that portrait of young Queen Elizabeth hanging on the wall. :-)
Gander Newfoundland was the shining star of compassion and kindness after 9/11, but at nearly every Canadian airport, there were people stranded when their planes were diverted or grounded. All of them were taken care of, and all their needs met. It's what we had to do. These were people in need. These were our friends.
Watch the musical “Come From Away” or just listen to the soundtrack. It tells the story beautifully how Gander welcomed the plan people. The characters are all part of the true story and it includes Beulah and Hannah as well.
Living on the border in Buffalo 15 min from Ft. Erie Ontario over the Peace Bridge I have been to Canada 100s of times. I luv the people, food cities and more. I'm in Vegas now but will return 4 good to my home next year and cant wait to return.
Travis Walsh I never knew there was such a term for Newfoundland. Here in Arizona I met a Newfie. Last name was Ryan. Still friends today met him about 2004. A little hard to understand him at first but a good man still friends today. He do anything for me.
And the rest of us in Canada are so happy your with our nation. On this day you all made Canadians being nice look small. I've never met anyone as nice and polite as a Newfie out did what we have ever been known for.

Being a Canadian i had to see the east coast and all of his glory ...I had a newfie have a beer with me and took me to the shore line And said : You can come here anytime of the year And stare out over the water The history itself speaks volumes Titanic, 9/11, WW2 , The French sailing ships, The first English Sailing ships, Men that went out and never returned. Even with all the horror of the water We managed to fish And feed our families And live Sure its a harsh place at times But it brings us closer together I guess that is why infact we are newfies If someone made a joke with you guys out west ...You get mad and feel insulted ...Newfie jokes make us laugh too..You see We can take anything you can throw at us. And still come on top Newfoundland Thank you for a wonderful view And building a great people to make her a ROCK
Newfoundland is a jewel...one of the kindest and most giving people that Canada has the honour to say is part of their nation. Saskatchewan and Newfoundland...the Only two provinces where the kindest Canadians can be found.
I few into Gander many years ago due to a military emergency...You just gotta love Canadians! What's their NOT to Love? Thanks our friends to the Great Whit North!
This report is terrific. They missed the best quote from the Mayor, though. He said "On day one we had 7,000 strangers arrive. By day 3 we hsd 7,000 friends staying. On day 5 we had 7,000 family leave." That is the spirit of Newfoundland right there.
I live 90 min. from of Gander. Great video but just a inaccuracies I'd like to point out: - Gander is a town not a city -Gander is landlocked and many of the clips throughout the video featuring the ocean and a bridge were actually taken in Twillingate (2 hours from Gander) not Gander Itself.
Aaron I'm sorry but I don't give a damn about your little hissy fit. It's about the people of Gander and Newfoundland. It's not about you. Who cares about the inaccuracies? Obviously you do but you should be thankful that you where you are
I've been watching lots of documentaries about Gander because of Come From Away and I notice showing the coastline despite talking about Gander happens in almost all of them. In fact the military selected an inland location explicitly because of coastal fog, even though nobody lived there yet. The military airbase being there caused a town to grow there, which became Gander. The airbase transitioned to commercial use as the town grew.
When "the plane people" were going back to the U.S., one of the passengers was missing. He was out moose hunting with a group of first nations hunters. These people were embraced as fellow humans. I hope the Americans can get some of that back some day.
Sadly, Newfoundland has changed a lot…modern day issues, and greed very evident in some places. Still a beautiful place…less culture and simplicity…doesn’t make for an old fashioned, kind place, but every now and then, I meet a salt of the earth Newfie, and my hearts thinks back to my childhood, and I feel pride, and sadness all at once.
Odd. I literally got the book made about this event just yesterday. I didn’t buy it online for any algorithm to see. I called my grandma after seeing it on her table and asked if I could borrow it. And didn’t look it up or anything. The next day BAM. This is At the top of my TH-cam recommended.
Gandar was one Canadian airport to receive planes bound for the US on 9/11. There were 17 airports all across Canada that received 238 planes and between 30 to 45 thousand passengers. There was concern that each plane that entered Canadian air space could have been a high jacked plane. About 500 flights were en route to the U.S. at the time of the attacks. Planes were entering Canadian airspace at a rate of one to two planes per minute. There were also several incidents in which the military escorted jets into Canadian airspace. The joint U.S.-Canadian North American Aerospace Defense Command used Canadian Forces Air Command and United States Air Force fighter jet aircraft to intercept and escort civilian passenger flights to Whitehorse International Airport. After the initial task of diverting the flights was over, thousands of stranded passengers and flight crews had to be housed and fed until the crisis was over. We have never heard about these things.
Of all the places to make emergency landings during this terrible crisis, this was the best place. The people of Newfoundland have big hearts and are so hospitable.
Imagine landing in the middle east on that morning, you would get the exact opposite of this here in Canada

What a Great Story.😇
I was in 8th Grade when the Towers Fell & will NEVER Forget it.
"The Plane People" lol
Thanks Newfies. We love you and are proud you are part of Canada!1
From a greatful American, I will never forget the love shown to us by our good neighbors in Canada. God bless!!
I'm in Vegas now but will return 4 good to my home next year and cant wait to return.
such kind peoples! i should visit there
Proud to be a Newfie
Travis Walsh should be to mate from graham from Australia
Travis Walsh pride goeth before the fall. Fact is the people in NL had the right motive.
"It’s weird like, you can see the cruelest part of the world. The cruelest part. But then on the other side you see the most beautiful part, do you know? And it’s like you go from one extreme to the next and they’re both worth it, because you wouldn’t see one without the other. But that cruel part, is damn cruel and you’ll never forget it. But that heaven…is heaven." - Britney Spears
imagine being the aircraft controller at the airport must be stressful.
Gander airport directs most planes over the ocean east and west , Their were probably 20 controllers working at Gander that day.
A proud Canadian Moment

Awesome Canadian spirit, proud resident of Canada.
And still come on top
Newfoundland Thank you for a wonderful view And building a great people to make her a ROCK
From a greatful American, I will never forget the love shown to us by our good neighbors in Canada. God bless!!
Gander went above and beyond on 9/11 but let's not forget that people all over the world were United and helping each other that day.
thank you ganda lovely people , just watched the vid .
Amazing story. God bless Canada! From portorrican.
I love Canadians so much 😭
Thank you
If you can't laugh at yourself, you can't laugh. I love Newfoundland.
Newfoundland is a jewel...one of the kindest and most giving people that Canada has the honour to say is part of their nation. Saskatchewan and Newfoundland...the Only two provinces where the kindest Canadians can be found.
So proud of the people in that province
I few into Gander many years ago due to a military emergency...You just gotta love Canadians!
What's their NOT to Love? Thanks our friends to the Great Whit North!
Thank you for caring for our people
this is canada. WE STAND ON GAURD FOR THEE NO MATTER WHAT.
Thank you Gander!
Great video but just a inaccuracies I'd like to point out:
- Gander is a town not a city
-Gander is landlocked and many of the clips throughout the video featuring the ocean and a bridge were actually taken in Twillingate (2 hours from Gander) not Gander Itself.
What's the point of this?
For historically accurate.
Aaron I'm sorry but I don't give a damn about your little hissy fit. It's about the people of Gander and Newfoundland. It's not about you. Who cares about the inaccuracies? Obviously you do but you should be thankful that you where you are
No need to be rude
I've been watching lots of documentaries about Gander because of Come From Away and I notice showing the coastline despite talking about Gander happens in almost all of them. In fact the military selected an inland location explicitly because of coastal fog, even though nobody lived there yet. The military airbase being there caused a town to grow there, which became Gander. The airbase transitioned to commercial use as the town grew.
Why am I crying watching this.
Another part of history that will never forgeteen for people of gander and All around world that day, hopefully next generation.still remember this
Proud to be the son of a Newfie.
Beautiful!!!!
Thank you, Canada
I’m proud to be a Newfie :) 💯👌🏾
Yes.
Odd. I literally got the book made about this event just yesterday. I didn’t buy it online for any algorithm to see. I called my grandma after seeing it on her table and asked if I could borrow it. And didn’t look it up or anything.
The next day BAM. This is At the top of my TH-cam recommended.
Also odd my pastor spoke about this situation at church last week and its now in my recommended
Not to take away from the folks at Newfoundland but I would love to here if the other towns and Provinces too!
Flew in on the way to Iraq and back. Amazing lil place. And great folks.
I bet you a lot of tourists probably had their greatest adventure in Gander and by extension the rest of Newfoundland.
Amazing !
Such a terrible day for America and the WORLD #humanityfirst
