I know that a ton of people are going to hate me for saying this, but...
Sandopolis is actually one of my favourite Zones in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Well, you're right to think one of those things.
I don't really agree, but frankly, I'd prefer to hear this over hearing someone suck Hydrocity or Ice Cap's dick for the five billionth time.
And I'm kind of in the same boat as you, anyway; Marble Zone and Wacky Workbench Zone are two of my favorite levels.

Callum Sparrow sandopolis is one of the better desert stages, right behind the one in sonic lost world.
sandopolis had average to great music, a neat slightly difficult gimmick, and was fast.
its not in my top fave, but it sure is better than marble garden and mushroom hill

I actually think the ghosts were a really cool idea, it was unique, it fit the theme of the level, and forced you to act quickly

For an unknow reason i've always loved Desert musics in every games, especially in the Mario and Sonic games. And this is another masterpiece to be honest, I love how it gets rocky in act 2. ;)
Say what you will about Sandopolis as a whole, but really if I would show someone why Sonic 3 is so great, This would be one of the levels I would talk about.
"Why, Jamie B?" You might be asking.
Because Sandopolis epitomizes some of the very best assets of Sonic 3 as a whole. How the level genuinely does feel like a boiling hot desert that is trying to beat you down with the intense heat. How the music is perfectly reflecting the ancient Egyptian inspired Pyramids and thematic setting and how the game continues to incorporate new elements into each new level, in Sandopolis's case, repelling, sliding sand, sand waterfalls and yup, even the ghosts are a new element.
It hits the nail so well on the head capturing the desert in a video game form, I grew a strong appreciation for this level over the years that I've enjoyed going through act 1 and even act 2 so much more.
Sonic 3 and K as a whole does this exceptionally in all of it's levels, but Sandopolis does it perfectly, even those of you who despise this level, have to admit. It really does hit the thematic mark just right.

thats true i used to not like the level but now when i look back at it i love the music and the challenge of the level especially act 2 that is even more of a challenge with the ghosts the light turning off the sand going up and more same with flying battery i didn't like it at first but then soon i liked it because of the airship sections and i was so happy when it got reimagined in sonic mania and even know sandopolis didn't get reimagined some of its gimmicks got into oil ocean in sonic mania
