Who is listening in 2024
Last time, through this forum, I translated a quatrain of Wahab Saeb's Kalam. In response to my comments, Mr. Rajesh Kaul Sahib has desired that I should translate the entire kalam (see reply to my comments). I am not only flattered but I am too impressed by the zeal and interest of Mr. Kaul, who has such a great love for his mother tongue and the mystic kalam. Mr. Kaul, my love to you.
As a background to this kalam, this is an autobiography of a spruce tree, which in Kashmiri is called 'Rayil' or 'raie kul'. This grows in the high forests at an altitude of 7000 to 9000 feet. Wahab Saeb , has described the man's journey through this world in the language of a tree by the tree itself. So, it is an autobiography of a tree to explain the fate of the human being in this world. The very idea is brilliant and unheard of in recent history.
Here are the lyrics of the song and the transcreation. It is not a word by word translation but an approach that explains the theme of the lyrics without changing the essence and content of the lyrics:
1.
Tse kəmyū kəry nay təːwīz pan
Yārō wan bālü yārō wan
This is the lamentation of the lover, seeking a union with the Beloved. He asks the beloved that “you have been put under a magical spell (taweez e punn) by someone which is stopping you from uniting with me”.
2.
Nābūdü əndray kornas būd
Ādam basti manz gupithi rūd
Tami chī khabar nō chhe maləːyikan
Yārō wan bālü yārō wan
Then Wahab Khar takes us to our origins. Human Beings and in fact the entire universe has been created out of no-thingness or call it emptiness. It was the consciousness ( (ruh or atman) of the humans that was created from this emptiness. So, from emptiness/ no-thingness, we, the humans were produced and then were transferred or hidden in the human container (Adam baste). This fact was not foretold by the creator even to the angels, who had already been created.

Yārō wan bālü yārō wan
This one is great. Since I am a Forester, I can understand what Wahab Khar means. ‘Rayil’, is a coniferous tree, that grows in or forests at a very high altitude of 7000 to 9000 ft. It is locally called Rayil or Raei kul and English name is Spruce tree. It is very tall, as tall as 120 ft. but not as straight (Houl- Zoul) as its associate- the Fir tree. Its timber (the essence, which poet calls awaz) is not comparable to either Fir or Deodar, its two associates. Wahab Khar compares himself or the human being to this tree, though nice looking and tall, in the high forests and says that the tree cutter (tabardar) accessed me there in the mountain and cut me down. It could have many meanings. Spiritually speaking, the human being, who is simple, ‘ houl and zoul’ can be always overtaken by the carnal self (tabbardar- greed-lust-ego) and destroy his essence. This is the true essence or ruh of the human being that is lamenting here.

Path wan rəːyil wəːjithas ḍulay

Ami tēz lyatray kəry nam gan
Yārō wan bālü yārō wan
From far-flung forests, the spruce tree(rayil) is cut down and rolled down (wajthus dulye) to the loading point wherefrom it is taken to the market. This whole process of cutting, conversion and rolling down to the market and then sawing it into logs (gunn) by a sharp saw, of such a huge tree with an age of 150 to 200 years surprises the poet. Such a huge tree of 200 years of age is decimated within hours. He compares this life cycle of a tree from its birth to death to the life span of a human being whose life in this world is also just a brief spell of sleep ( Nandre zolei) like the tree. This also depicts the environmental concern of our mystics, at an age when environmental concerns did not bother man,

Yet another great from Wahab Saeb. He says after the tree is sawn, it goes to the carpenter, who makes it into smaller pieces (biryane) and fashions it into beautiful pieces with his instrument called ‘toor’ in Kashmiri. (I searched for an English equivalent of ‘toor’ but I could not get it. Wahab Khar makes the spruce tree to tell his story of life and the beauty lies in that. Then he says that this carpenter (wuste kar) threw away my intelligence to the winds. Let us understand that the tree is very intelligent as far as its respiratory process, food manufacturing process (photosynthesis), circulatory process and so many other life processes are concerned. A tree is possibly as good and efficient in its life processes as a human being. Its intelligence of sense, awareness is as good as that of a human being. It is proved that it has emotions too. This is called intelligence/ awareness/consciousness. Wahab Khar knows that trees are conscious, which even great scientists till recently did not know. Even now the scientific world thinks that consciousness is the product of the matter of which the tree is made of. But be it known that scientists are not correct. Spiritually, we know that consciousness is a distinct and separate entity, which is non -matter and non-physical and is by the command of the creator.

Finally, Wahab Saeb caps it with surrender to the Prophet (Saw) and bows and seeks the prophet’s (saw) blessings.
Let us remember that our life is short-lived and temporary. Our carnal self is full of greed, lust, and ego. We should search and look for our inner self and derive happiness and peace from our consciousness.

Divine lyrics by one of the legendary sufi poet of kashmir(WAHAB KHAAR r.a)
Everlasting classic....no one sings it better than Gh Hassan Sofi......the only one who comes close is Dhananjay Kaul!!!
My childhood favorite singer great voice no match
I remember this great singer once told in an interview that he was taken by his mother to some Faqir, who informed him about his gift of the good divine voice. What a melodious singer.
A superb presentation on the creation of human Being by Wahab Khar. He says that man was produced from no-thingness to a Being, in a human container. Even the angels were not foretold about it. Now Wahab Khar is pleading with his consciousness(spirit) which is now surreptitiously being distracted by the body, not to detach itself from him.

I came into being from no-thingness,
I was placed in a human container,
Even the angels were not (foretold) told about it.
Who has detached you( consciousness) from me,
Come ! my friend.
You always come up with interesting insights. Thank you.
Can you please translate entire song🙏 Thx
