  • Doubt and disbelief live in the hearts of many people as they wrestle with the questions of good and evil and the existence of God. Those who embrace Christianity as a way of life must then learn how to live out their faith as a transformed individual in an imperfect and difficult world. But how is this accomplished? The Shortest Way Home: C.S. Lewis & Mere Christianity is an introductory review to Lewis’s classic work on issues of faith and reason. Viewers will find honest discussion and helpful insights for the tough questions asked by believers and skeptics alike, including:• How do we know right from wrong?• If a good God made the world, why has it gone wrong?• Why did God give us free will to choose to do good and evil?• Is Christianity a bargain in which we are rewarded for doing good things and punished for doing bad things?• Is it enough to believe in God without believing in Him personally?• Can you believe Jesus was a good moral teacher but not the Savior of the world? Those who journey to the heart of Lewis’s most famous apologetic work will find that the longest way round-the hard way of discipleship, of learning to truly love God and man-is the shortest, and only way home

If you struggle with doubt about Jesus, do this... deep in the recesses of your heart, earnestly and respectfully ask, "God, if You are real, show Yourself to me...".
I did when I was 16, and I had an encounter with Him. My life was changed. He is real. In the Bible, He says "If you seek me, you will find me, if you seek Me with all of your heart."

This is a good tribute to the man. I’ve read Mere Christianity before but this explanatory piece is a very useful addendum. I’ve struggled with pride all my life and even now as I’m taking baby steps away from it I do stumble. I will persist and through the grace of God I will remove this sin as much as I humanly can. It’s a process I embrace with a deeper, and deepening faith. Praise God.

The more it bothers me to see a Cross with Christ still hanging on it.
That is past, it is done, it is finished as He Himself said.

@@Rebel4Right We can be perfect-ing, because God is working to conform us to the image of Jesus (which would only make sense if we hadn't arrived, yet). But what Jesus said, about "be ye perfect", should not be taken to mean that we would achieve moral perfection in this lifetime. It has to be more like becoming perfected, because the rest of the New Testament would condemn salvation through achieving perfection as works salvation, and 1 John 1 condemns it as a lie: "If we say that we have no sin, we lie, and the truth is not in us". While there are theologians who love to put Jesus and Paul, and even John, in opposition to each other, I do not believe this is honest. Jesus was not saying that, unless we achieve moral perfection, we are not saved. It even disagrees with what he said about salvation, in John 3 and when they asked him what do we do to do the work of God? "The work of God is to believe in Him whom He sent". Salvation is not for "the few, the proud", who are finally saved because they ran the gantlet, and made it out on the other side, with self-earned perfection they can present to God. That's a dangerous false gospel, so we don't want to go there. The Jesus of John 3 could not have meant that, because He did not oppose Himself.

20:57 It's funny that this lady quotes Einstein, who indeed said that "God doesn't play dice with the universe" and then claims that physics says that we live in a deterministic universe. The problem with this argument is that Einstein was wrong.
Einstein's argument was against quantum mechanics, which says that there is an element of randomness to the universe. Einstein tried very hard to disprove quantum mechanics, coming up with several experiments which he expected to prove his point. All these experiments turned out in favour of quantum mechanics instead.
The takeaway from this, apart from Einstein being wrong, is that scientific knowledge is not determined by what people say, but by what can be proved in experiments.

@ 31:00, you apparently quote Lewis talking about the "do unto others" directive. Lewis says we can't carry that out until we first 'love others as we love ourselves' and we can't do that until we learn to love God." In saying that, Lewis seems to bypass the bit about our capability (and my inability) to love ourselves. Lewis basically rewrites that verse to read 'Love others as you love God' and that's not what the text says! The commandment in the bible says "love others as you love yourself" - Not 'love others as you love God.' - What am I missing?

We can have free will when God knows all, including what we're going to do. What God knows, does not impinge on our moral freedom and responsibility at all. He is able to take our free wills into account, while what He knows will happen is what it truly will be. We aren't being pushed into our thoughts and actions by it, like gears being pushed by other gears.
It is helpful to look at other scripture to get some balance about this issue. The babies, who have the truth of God revealed to them, do not worry about God forcing them to sin, or to disbelieve. We know it is our fault, and are grateful for His mercy toward us, in spite of our sin and unbelief. The proclamations of God's supposed ruthlessness in predestination, all come from the wise and prudent theologians. We, the trusting babies, know better than that.

One of the strongest proofs that Scripture is the very Word of God I will link here:
Isiah 53 describes in graphic detail how our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, would be executed 610 years before that method of execution had even been invented. In the Qumran Cave Dead Sea Scroll discovery of 1946 - 1947. There was an entire Isiah Scroll recovered and our Bibles are pretty much a match to it as long as they maintain a word for word based translation. That scroll is from 200 BC, (give or take a decade or so), so even if people say there's no way Isiah predicted all he did about the Lord's coming and execution 700 years before it happened. The date of that Scroll sets it firmly 200 years or so before the Lord was even born and that method of execution still hadn't been invented yet. I've seen reports that crucifixion was found to be used by the Romans in 90 BC but that still doesn't explain how Isiah knew about it 700 years before that time or even if you date it by the Isiah Scroll that was found in the Dead Sea Cash dated to 200 BC. It also demonstrates God's love for us by His preservation and the accuracy of the preservation of His Word.
If I had just Isiah 53 I could preach the Gospel as we find out from the story of Phillip and the Eunuch. Isiah 53 is among the strongest proofs that our Bibles do in fact contain God's Word showing His divine nature in His Prophetic Words given to Isiah via the Holy Spirit. Most have never seen this information which is truly sad in that our Savior is the one and only way to salvation for any of us. (John 14:6) We know from our Bibles that some will one day believe as that's one of the main reasons for the tribulation, to bring His people Israel back to Him and all those who are saved during that time. It's just sad knowing that no one has to arrive in Heaven well done if they'd just believe in Him now.
With the entire book of Isiah I could preach the Gospel for a lifetime as it lays it all out, including how it ends.
    Take care and God Bless.

Perfection is like trying to get a grip on a cloud.
As for the Trinity, think of ice, steam and water. All different states of the same thing with their own function.
An overlooked great piece of writing which could be a core of study for upper school students.

We are not saved by achieving perfection! We are being perfect-ed, conformed to the image of Jesus. Of course, Jesus wants us perfected, and we are to cooperate with Him perfecting us. But new flash, guys: nobody dies having achieved the complete image of Jesus in our lives. Not even some uber class of saints, no more than the lesser saints. We are saved in Jesus Christ's perfection, not our own. We are to be zealous and repent, being perfect-ed, but no honest person can look at themselves and believe we are anywhere close to perfection. To do so would cause hopeless despair, not faith, but that's because we'd have transfered our faith to our own ability to become perfect before we die, and that is a complete, lying, sucker bet. There is no reason to put so much faith in ourselves, but we don't have to; there is no benefit in trusting in a lie. What does the Bible say about our trusting our own hearts? That we are fools, if we trust in our own hearts.

Once you are TRULY BORN Again (2Corinthians 6:14-18, Acts 1-2:1-38, Romans 4-8, Galatians 5, John 15, etc), as far as God in Christ Jesus is concerned, You Are Perfect in HIS eyesight; you become Jesus-Jr. or God-Jr., clearly qualified to make Heaven, for you are in HIM (called "A Saint."). You love what JESUS loves and hate what HE hates!

@@messiahapostle8239 Your new nature is born of God, and it is conformed to Jesus, already. You are right; we are seen IN Jesus for salvation, not in ourselves. But our growthin Christian character is something God desires, and for purposes of conforming us to Jesus's image, He does see us as we really are in ourselves, but not for salvation. That is in Christ alone. It is all about the cross.

Amen, and so important to not despair because of falling short. Wanting to become perfect, doing best daily, I must remember that I can only achieve a little of His personality and hopefully reflect and yes share in true love. But 1st Corinthians ch 13 that love is ALL and above anything teaches me also that we eventually will know Him if we can know WHAT love looks like.......(not rude or proud or envious..etc....)........❣️❣️❣️

Mr. Lewis makes my head ache. Lewis in his old fashion style of presentation takes pains to build a foundation for his studies, then tears it down and starts all over. It can be exhausting for a non-philosopher to take in unless you reread his arguments three or four times. Eventually the truth reveals itself. But then I need sleep.

Unfortunately the Irish are being replaced at one end by not having families and on the other end importing people who have large families and live off of public assistance.

Catholicism is not a denomination. All the others who broke away from Jesus’s ONE Church are denominations. For starters, there would be no bible as we know today without the Catholic Church. The Bible is a Tradition of the Catholic Church. Without the Councils of the Catholic Church we would not know the Truth and Fullness of Christianity.

    • @hornplayer1228

The councils of the Catholic Church are the reason for todays confusion amongst Christians. The wisdom of the Church Fathers was anathematised as heresy and replaced by worldly men with Popes, Priests, and Pastors. They extinguished the teaching of mankind by a whole host of Spiritual Messengers that Christ had promised to send to reveal all the things He couldn't reveal during His short Ministry on earth.

Roman Catholicism, is a man-made cult invented by Emperor Constantine so he could conquer the known world. That's a historical fact. True Christianity is made up of individuals (lively stones) who believe in Jesus, have the Spirit of Christ dwelling in them, and do what their Lord commands in his holy word. Jesus builds his church, not man. Believers only need the council of God's word. Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Protestants et al have traded God's word for their traditions. They are no better than the Pharisees of old who Jesus rebuked. Repent!

there is no place I find in the Bible that says God is three people. God was from the beginning. The Bible says God is a spirit, and they that worship him must worship Him in spirit and truth. Jesus said, when you’ve seen me you’ve seen the father. The Bible says in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the godhead bodily. Jesus was the only person representing The fullness of God. The Bible says that Mary was overshadowed by the Holy Ghost., which makes the Holy Ghost the father of Jesus. This is true, because god is a spirit. The Holy Ghost and the father are the same. The body of Jesus was created in Mary’s womb, and that was his point of beginning as his fleshly dwelling. He was God and he was man. Subject to the Temptations & pain that we all experience yet without sin. it was that flesh that had to be crucified and bleed for our sins, and that is why when our sins are washed away in baptism, it should be in the name of Jesus Christ as Acts 2:38 describes. And whatsoever you do in word or deed do all in the name of Jesus Christ. In doing so we give honor to the father or the spirit of God. Jesus is the door he is the way, and if we go by some other means we are a thief and a robber. I pray for Jesus to speak to every honest heart and to fill them with the beautiful gift of His Spirit.
