I love that some of your videos have English subtitles. Your dance analysts videos are so detailed and cool. I'm learning so much. Thank you! j-hope is incredible!!!!! He's so dynamic and adds so much to deck of his performances. If only more people had sharp eyes like you to notice so the small details 💜
Thank you for the fantastic video, I really learn so much of what makes jhope so eye-catching from you. He really has no bad angles, and his lines are always on point! His dance is really textured. His dedication shines through. In addition to natural talent, we can see just how much work he dedicates to dance. Thank you for the translations too, and for sharing your reactions with us.
Thank you for the explanation of hoseok's astounding dancing skills, now I understand the reasons behind why I feel so amazed when he does such movements. and thank you for the kind soul who put the English subtitles.
'On' is a great display of J-Hope's strong musicality. His movements perfectly complement the delivery of his verse. Every step, every hand gesture, every tilt of the head has been fine-tuned to capture the tempo. If you try to fit his choreography to a different section of the song, it would not have the same effect. Plus, J-Hope's unique 'swag' and attitude takes it to a whole other level. His ingenious use of sound effects ('Aye', 'Oh') strengthens the sense of rhythm; he places the accent on 'Aye' and draws back slightly on 'Oh'. Through a combination of his vocal cadence and physical motions, he is able to create diversity. Another instance of this is the drum-beating section. As Hoseok continuously strikes the drum, his emotions are heightened, the atmosphere builds up and his movements become amplified. The beat is like an electric current passing through him, energising his movements. That's what I love about J-Hope's dancing and performance in general- there are peaks and valleys, ebbs and flows, which make it dynamic and exciting to watch. He is the ultimate hype beast- he knows how to create tension, play with and intensify the audience's emotions. This happens because he is fully immersed in the performance and committed to those feelings himself. #Jhope #제이홉 #방탄소년단제이홉
Some might think that the mark of a pro dancer is the ability to stand out and grab attention. Actually, professionalism lies in a dancer's ability to convey the vision of the choreographer and fit the mood of the song/ performance, which involves awareness of one's position and role within the routine. Hoseok always prioritizes cohesiveness of the group in order to present a seamless performance. Self-expression is a feature of freestyling in street dance, which is Hoseok's area of specialty. For him to adjust his personal style of expression to serve the group is an admirable quality. Joon once said that 'Hobi is like water... If I’m with Hobi I feel so comfortable'. This can apply to the performance aspect. Not only does Hoseok lead the team in rehearsals and monitors recordings for the best result, his presence alone in group stages is reassuring. Any group would greatly benefit from having a dancer of Hoseok's calibre, who also displays outstanding leadership and the ability to hold the team together and keep the choreo tight. He is a strong pillar of support and a true professional, echoed by the way Arata-san addresses him as 'Great Teacher'. I hope Hoseok gets to showcase his skills more in future choreography. #Jhope #제이홉 #방탄소년단제이홉
This is truly the most knowledgeable and comprehensive analysis of Hoseok's dance technique from an expert. Arata-san notices and calls attention to the extensive list of moments that makes Hoseok's performance in any stage or MV memorable and stimulating. From the height (ballon) of his jump to the open angle spiral (efface epaulement) of his body, then to the grounding and use of his pelvis in plie to engage and drive the movement of this legs and feet, and finally to his amazing turnout and hip/knee/ankle alignment, Hoseok's dance technique base exceeds what most laymen would incorrectly attribute to "just" a hip hop: dancer. Even more telling is that Arata-san credits Hoseok's hip-hop roots and training in allowing him to expertly coordinate these classical dance techniques and execute the demanding choreography with lightning speed and stunning precision. Too often, classical training is elevated over popular or street dance training, when, especially in contemporary music choreographic movement, both are of important and likely equal value. Nothing eludes Arata-san's eye as he notes all of the intrinsic things that make Hoseok stand out in any choreography: the diversity of dance textures utilized (from fluid to hard hits), the alternation of sound effect with gestures (hand, head, neck, knees, feet, hip) to accent and highlight the rhythm of the music, the finish of his body line from the fingertips to the toes, the build of musical phrases and transitions through the shifting of movement and gesture size, every single facial expression matching the emotion of the musical journey. And his observation that only a dancer of Hoseok's caliber, assurance, stability could adjust and "camouflage" his phenomenal dancing abilities for the greater success of the group and stage performance as a whole is moving and, for those who thrive on watching Hoseok perform, bittersweet. Arata-san can see the Hoseok adjusts and varies his dancing in way that's needed to make the stage and the group viewing experience work, but is able to call attention to how, even if he's on the side, Hoseok strands out and excels.
Thank you so much for this!!!!!!! It was really informative! I agree that Hoseok really is great at adjusting. Bangtan's performances are really cohesive, and, people can disagree, but I attribute that to the professionalism and dedication Hoseok has in helping Bangtan present a great stage. It's not often you see someone who enjoys the stage who is willing to adjust for the group. His love for the stage and performing is really cool!!! ... But I do miss him being in center. I think Bangtan has reached that level where putting him in center won't affect the stability of the group performance. I hope to see it soon..... hopefully?
this was great hahaha i enjoyed it even though i couldn't understand most of what you were saying!! i always look forward to your review of hobi's dance!! thank you thank you
For those having trouble keeping up with the English subtitles, here's the transcript (in 4 parts): Hello everyone, Arata here. Welcome to Arata Dance School. This video is for something I've gotten many requests for- Great Teacher's (Hoseok's) dancing in 'On'. Let's take a look. For this one, although I do feel that his appearance is rather short, as expected his part is fantastic. Because he did great for his portion, he played the role of holding the team's performance together. Due to his ability, by dancing at the very side he kept the overall group stage tight and cohesive. He has a high level of skill and I've listed the main highlights on the screen. Swaying rhythm Beautiful body line and use of the waist Instantaneous entrance Proper execution of every move Windblown hairstyle Drum-beating Dance Small movement/ detail *Crying* Stunning silhouette Shouting to the max Even Garrett McNamara would be impressed What do you think? For the last point I mention Garrett McNamara. He and Hoseok have some exceptional qualities in common. Hope that all of you will look forward to my following analysis. But you don't need to expect too much! It's not some amazing evaluation, I'm just half-joking 🙂 (Arata-san is being humble here). Let's begin then. Firstly at 1: 16, 'Swaying Rhythm'. Here Great Teacher makes an entrance. As he enters, his body is in a state of slight swaying. Let's take a look. Here it is. At the 'dalala' point, he doesn't steady himself in a standing position immediately after coming in. Instead he follows the 'dalala' rhythm to do a continuous swaying motion in a gentle manner. What will this create? The jump into the air that he launches after this is very high, about 3.5 meters tall (Note: I think Arata-san is estimating the distance from the top of his fingers to the floor). He is deliberately using his body as a support in order to link with this jump. He doesn't go right away to 'zero' (i.e. complete stillness); instead on the last beat of 'dalalala' he adjusts his body. By making small movements with his body, he is putting himself on standby and preparing for the next step in the routine. What he does is for the purpose of achieving height in the jump. It's a refined skill that he displays in this moment. Here is the relatively high jump. The point is to not let your body return to a state of 'zero' (become completely still). I hope those of you who practise dance will remember this.
The following highlight is 'Beautiful body line and use of the waist' at 1: 29. As expected, I discovered while looking at this that his arms and legs are really long! Hence in this section, he is able to draw beautiful curved lines with his hands. One more thing to note is the use of his pelvic area. Let's slow the speed to take a closer look. As the hands are drawing a wave, his legs are following in sync with firm steps on the ground. That's why his movements can express a feeling of weight and solidity. Look at his right pelvis after he completes the jump. As his left leg turns towards the outside, his right pelvis is raised upwards. As a result, a three-dimensional feeling is generated for his entire body starting from this area. He's not just doing flat movements of this sort (*Arata-san demonstrates). His upper torso first starts with this movement, then his pelvis below turns such that his body displays a reversed rotation. At this moment his pelvis is jutting out which creates the three-dimensional structure. Therefore, a beautiful curved line is created as well as a very dynamic quality. At 'Nanana', this movement where his right leg steps out happens from the pelvis. That's why his entire line looks especially elegant. Through the elongated link between his right arm and right leg, a visually appealing body silhouette is produced. Is he a medieval sculpture? Energizing the stepping out of his leg from the pelvis is something amazing he does in this dance. Here during the 'dondon' in the music, as he rotates his waist section his head remains in position. This use of his waist is amazing! His ability to use his waist instantaneously while completing the move and keeping up with the rapid beat- isn't it astonishing? Not many people can achieve this kind of depth in movement while dancing at such a high speed. How should I put it? It's precisely his hip-hop dance roots that allows him to exert this level of control over his body and produce stunning groovy movements. At 1: 36 we have 'Instantaneous entrance'. Let's take a look. The second before he starts his rap, he has a sudden moment where he comes to a complete halt. His knees are bent and his center of gravity falls on the tip of his toes. His weight tilts towards the front of his body, then his movement stops. Following this, he says 'yo' while pointing his finger? At the same time his knees look bent and while in this condition, he shifts his weight onto his ankles. This is all executed in an instant. During the pause his entire body falls on his tiptoes, then at the next second he expertly uses the time while crossing his arms to transfer the weight onto his back ankles. In fact, his arms not only extend towards the back, he even adopts a slight embracing posture. That is to say, from the moment he opens up he utilizes every part of his body and rotates rightwards. This alone is highly skillful; it's even more so to do it within such a short period of time. 'Oh!' 'Ai!' 'Oh!' 'Ha! Ho! Ha!' This time he adds a variety of sound effects. The way he plays with sound is so cool. The diversity in texture is incredible. He uses his ever-changing sensibility to 'capture' the feeling of the melody. Amazing. Ahahaha... Ai! Oh! Ohohoho... yeah! Do you understand? At 'Ai' he places the accent/emphasis, and during 'Oh' he draws back. It's this kind of pattern. Oh yeah! First it's 'Ai', followed by 'Ai! Oh!'. How does he produce such..... 1: 43 'Proper execution of every move'. What to pay attention to is that even though all the accents are swiftly done, after these rapid moves his head can still do powerful 'hits'. Do you see? The earlier motions are fluid and softer, then at the end he is able to link them with the 'dondondon' type of strong hits. This increases the percentage of contrast. After he hits the beat with the arm accents, as his figure shifts sidewards he raises his face in sync. During 'bun' there's a continuous action of him lowering and raising his head. He does this in a flash. This is an intricate detail, but it's not all. Here his method of walking is great. He is not just using his legs, he is also relying on his pelvis to vitalize the steps. That's how he generates feeling for the entire body.
1: 52 'Windswept hairstyle'. As he leaves the scene his hairstyle looks particularly beautiful. Please look. Right here! When the wind sweeps across, at this moment we can see his hairstyle. It's quite a lovely feeling. The next point is at 2: 08. 'Drum-beating Dance'. The more he beats the drum, the more his emotions are heightened. His leg movements also become amplified. He is continuously striking the drum in a manner that looks like dancing. That's why I call it 'Drum-beating Dance'. From here it almost looks like he's about to destroy the drum surface. The way he raises the drum sticks back up after finishing is very smoothly done. It adds points to his performance for me. 'Ahhhhh! Thank you'- manner of gently returning his drum sticks is hard to resist. After this is 2: 48- 'Small movement/ detail'. Take a look. While leaving the scene, Great Teacher is the only one to add an arm gesture. I think people with a dance background should be able to understand what I mean. Compared to ordinary people who just turn and leave, dancers are more likely to adopt this kind of posture. Even when making an exit, dancers will finish it seamlessly. It is a form of sincerity and loyalty towards the dance, and also a habit (one that I need to develop for myself). As expected, dancers will be mindful of such detail. What should I say, this looks like one of the habits formed by people who have been dancing for a long time. Unn Unn Unn... 3: 28 '*Crying/ exclamation sound'. Woohoohoo! Here at 'Don Pashyaaa' Ahh! Here (also for Jimin). Look, Great Teacher's figure is curved. He puts out his tongue slightly while raising his arms. All this looks too stylish. The same applies to what comes after. His hit is so strong. 'Gun gun gun gun!' 3: 41 'Stunning silhouette'. During this part we have to look closely at the stance of both his legs. From this section of the dance we can see that his legs are wide apart and his center of gravity is lowered. His line of sight and the way he moves his arms- 'Ararara...' Here Jimin relies on hits to complete the move. He mainly uses hits of the upper and lower body to produce accents. For Great Teacher, he relies more on steps to complete the move. Great facial expression! Do you understand? His legs close for one moment and open up at the next, simultaneously he uses a similar waving motion to show accents. On one hand he conveys a strong feeling of weight, while also using his footsteps to create rhythm. The head isolation here is fantastic. Amazing technique. His silhouette here is really superb. 'Uwa! Uwa! Uwa!' Now 3: 46 'Shouting to the max'. The sense here is incredible. His waist is grounded and rotating upwards. The feeling is that of rising from the bottom to the top. The movement is quick, but the more you slow it down the more you can see it clearly. I recommend that you slow it down to watch. For the last point at 3: 58 'Even Garrett McNamara would be impressed'. Garrett McNamara is a professional surfer who conquered a 30 meter-high wave and broke a Guinness World Record. I don't know if his record has been surpassed yet. He is an amazing person. A 30m-wave is roughly equivalent to the height of an 8 storey-mansion. You can also see an astonishing big wave here! This is stunning, the wave is so deep. The wave starts from his fingertips and goes all the way down to his ankles. It doesn't just stop at his waist. He really linked it from top to bottom in a single breath. Isn't this a BIG WAVE? HERE, here he's super cool!
The choreography for ON is very complex and difficult, plus the tempo is fast. Bangtan's routines have never been easy. Under these circumstances, he is still able to properly demonstrate his firm foundation in dance that he has developed to this point. He is indeed deserving of the title of 'Great Teacher'. His secret behind executing a dynamic dance while creating three-dimensionality lies in the use of his pelvis. His movements evolve constantly with the change in speed and flavour of the music. He is able to express emphasis on all the important sections while maintaining intricacy and precision. I take my hat off and bow down to him more than 25 times. His skill may not be immediately discernible, but in order to reach this standard of dance his skill is essential. Though his part is short this time, he plays a highly important role. It's because you have a dancer of this calibre at the extreme side that the whole group's performance benefits and looks cohesive. This routine combines various elements and Bangtan continues striving to show greater quality. Sometimes dancers with strong foundation will retreat in choreography to act as support. I still want to say that honestly, he doesn't appear for long and doesn't have much center. Regardless of where he stands, he is able to provide a feeling of assurance for the team which is important in performing this stage. His dance skill is masterful and every movement is fantastic, but he still pays attention to and maintains a balance with the people around him. I think this quality is very admirable. The thoughts I have from this performance are that he is constantly adjusting his personal style of expression (few people can accomplish this). He has undergone serious consideration about prioritising group cohesiveness, and how he can contribute to the group from his position. That's how this stage came about. Hoshi from Seventeen plays a similar role. It's precisely because he dances well that he has the ability to present support. This is the mark of a true professional dancer. The ability of the other members to express their own special features can be mainly attributed to the complete sense of assurance and stability that Great Teacher provides. Simultaneously he receives stimulation from the other members, which sparks fireworks. The linking of all the firework moments is what produces this stage. I feel that he is a truly wise person. Don't you think the term 'strategic dance' is really cool... am I the only one? It's as if Great Teacher is trying to camouflage his presence. For the songs this time, I get the sense that instead of highlighting the individual, it's more about every song having a concept. Every section has a member as a main character. Jungkook and Jimin have a lot of dance parts. Lately you see Suga and Great Teacher (Hoseok) having a duo dance during the rap portion. Great Teacher starts off his verse followed by Suga- it's this sort of pattern. Then it's followed by Jin and RM whose vocals and rap complement each other. I think that this mode of performance and sense of balance was designed after much consideration. My feeling is that Great Teacher is a big pillar of support.

J hopes personally is very good .

I love this guy’s description of The Great Teacher. Lol. I agree 100% with everything he says.
I hope to see it soon..... hopefully?
今日はホソク大先生ですね☺️

For those having trouble keeping up with the English subtitles, here's the transcript (in 4 parts):
Hello everyone, Arata here.
Swaying rhythm
Beautiful body line and use of the waist
Instantaneous entrance
Proper execution of every move
Windblown hairstyle
Drum-beating Dance
Small movement/ detail
*Crying*
Stunning silhouette
Shouting to the max
Even Garrett McNamara would be impressed
What do you think?
'Gun gun gun gun!'
3: 41 'Stunning silhouette'. 'Uwa! Uwa! Uwa!'
Now 3: 46 'Shouting to the max'.
