I am a student at WGU. I am on schedule to get my BS degree in the late spring on next year. With the self paced program, I could have theoretically completed it this year, if I really really buckled down. I am going to wait till I get my BS degree till I launch my next major job search. I am actually deflated in my job search, which is why I am in the hover mode. I had my resume done by an expert and then had it redone by Top Resume. And recruiters contacted me about jobs I was not qualified for. There is a saying in the IT community that you have to apply to 4000 jobs before you get your next one. I also think WGU is one of the best options for a cybersecurity degree. I actually wasted time and money with other online universities. It is also on my bucket list to enter their MS Cybersecurity degree program.
One thing I want to add is that it can be a more social process if you want it to (via online). There are quite a few study groups and ways to reach out to other students. You can also meet with your program mentor weekly instead of every 2 weeks and your class instructors regularly to help keep you accountable.
Just a heads up. Some of those courses for the cybersecurity degree are officially changing next month so the spreadsheet needs to be updated. I've heard they're updating other courses as well, but I only know about the cybersecurity degree since that's the degree I'm doing now.
@@loveofthegame2015 Pretty intense but it depends on your definition of “no IT background”. Do you just mean no professional experience but you still have a passion for IT and have self taught/have a home lab/etc or just know basically how to use a PC and want to dive into the degree?
Hi Shane, the information in your video is gold for someone looking to start a new career and wants to join WGU for a degree! Could you please also make a video on pursuing a Master's Degree at WGU?
I hope Shane reads this: WGU is currently changing curriculum to match the demands of what's going on in the industry. So I would think creating that website you mention on your recent videos is going to be necessary and easier so that you and your team can update those spreadsheets rather than changing it on each video.
Great video..I begin my Journey in CyberSecurity and Information Assurance at WGU also.. September 1 2023. , I have very basic IT technical skills.. from prior college training and working in the medical field as a urgent care receptionist and at a medical healthcare call center.
@@rachelxcabrera I am just about to finish my degree (BS in Cybersecurity & Information Assurance). No tech experience, transfer credits, or college experience aside from a couple classes from WGU Academy. I've been working full time (40hrs) and had other responsibilities, plus ADHD. When I finish it'll be just under 2 years. It's gone really well. I should've taken a 1 month break after each term, but I didn't lol so I got burnt out. Otherwise I might've been done in 3 terms instead of 4. I'm in my final term and working on my second to last class of the program. My personal time limit to getting bored in a class is 3 weeks, so I tried to use that as my timeline for the more difficult ones.
The vast majority of people will not be able to get a cybersecurity degree in 6 month at WGU and you are cheapening the degree. Most people take at least 2 yrs unless they are already in the field and know the subject matter already. Trying to schedule examinations and certifications alone take over a year.
Yeah, this may work for someone who has worked in Security for years. I am just about to finish a BS in Cyber Security in just under a year. If you aren't currently working industry or have a ton of knowledge in the field, what are you going to do? Test out of all your classes from brain dumping and then try to get a job and not know what the fuck you're doing? I don't remember a lot of stuff from my earlier classes that I rushed through. I have had the last year off and study most of the day between school work and cyber platforms to get training and still feel like I don't know shit. Gluck trying to graduate in 6 months while retaining what you've learned. Also, don't get a BS in Cybersecurity. Go for CS, Cloud or the Network Security and then get a Master's in Cybersecruity. The Cybersecurity program is like a salad bar, you learn a little bit about a lot of different areas, but not enough in any particular area to make you dangerous.

You should be able to. Apply on their website they have a promo code that will waive the fee. They’ll also request the transcripts directly from your high school, also likely waive the fee on that too. From there they’ll get back to you in about a week with the classes you’ll still have to take for the degree. Compare and contrast the courses you can take from a 3rd party website and start knocking those out before you officially enroll. Then enroll, finish out the classes with wgu. This one university wants so much money that I owe because my financial aid didn’t come through that year so they won’t give out my transcript until I pay it completely off. I feel trapped.
Unfortunately you pretty much are. I've never seen a school that didn't require all transcripts and they run you through clearing house to make sure they have them. No way around it.
