If you are and considering the XBotGo Chameleon, DO NOT BUY IT. I paid $479 and purchased it with the 13' tripod to record soccer. It stopped working within less than 30 days. Their customer support team has been EXTREMELY unhelpful. Their products are defective. Please beware before spending your hard-earned money on such a product.

Do you have to use phone
Yes, you need the phone to record. I've only used iPhone but it can also work with Android I believe
