    You know how to identify the game on a few music notes by just hearing the same *sax instrument* at the intro in every port.

    Had the PlayStation version of this and spent hours with those fighting waitresses. I mean the game of course. Anything with a bunnygirl kicking butt is automatically good. Anyway that music brings back so many memories. Used the game music player to put the songs on audio tape and listened to that in a Walkman for a very long time. Good times.

    I had a funny introduction to Variable Geo. Back in 1998 or so when I was in high school, a buddy of mine and I were doing what we could to get anime tapes and we came across a fansubbing group and sent away for some tapes. All we could really do was go by the titles and hope for the best as there was no indication at all what each thing was. My friend picked Variable Geo among some others, and I put the order in. He came over when the tapes arrived and I believe VG was the first tape we put in to check out. The premise of a tournament of fighting waitresses was pretty funny to the both of us, and I still like that concept. The "adult" aspect of it was a surprise. That's never really been my thing, though I don't think it was heavily pronounced in the early episodes of the anime. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the show was a bit more tame than the original PC98 game. There's some weird stuff on that platform. Good to see most of the games are pretty decent, aside from the indecent stuff.

      The first VG OVA penalty was toned down from the PC98 penalty. In the OVA universe the max level penalty was no higher than what it showed there. Now the OVA made for the very last game in the series was a straight adaptation of the source material, minus most of the source material. Which is a bit of a shame as that game had the most ambitious story since the AVG arc.

  • @CVRJM
    @CVRJM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The Sufami and Saturn versions are the best ones here on account of the effort TGL put into using those system's capabilites. A shame that VG2 wasn't widely ported to other systems (It was a PS1 exclusive I beleive) as that's an excellent 2D fighter in its own right which improves on the first game in every way.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VG 2 was actually on the PC98. Not sure if the PSX version is based upon that though.

    • @Silanda
      @Silanda 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@RetroCore I don't think it was; they're completely different. AVG 2 is probably the game in the series that had the most effort put in to being a legitimately solid fighter. They also put out VG Custom on the PC, which used AVG 2's assets (badly) and had H-scenes. That one was a bit of a shame as it could have been a PC version of the Playstation game, but instead it feels cobbled together.

    I found this series from the OVA. It wasn't advertised being based on a fighting game on the DVD. I found the concept so bonkers that I had to see it at least once. I tried the Advanced VG 2 on the PS1 last year. It was pretty fun. The PS1 version has no hentai images. You can just play it as an absurdly themed fighter.

Except for the hentai part, thankfully that didn't carry over, never saw the appeal in cartoonish women showing off their goods. Sega CD FMVs are much worse than the Super Famicom Version.

    The pubic area censorship is hardly anything to be surprised by. From what I understand, that's some Japanese law regarding not showing genetalia. I don't get it myself, but whatever. Pretty much anything that's not the PC98 version is better than the PC98 version, but obviously the Saturn is top dog here, then the PSX, and finally the PCE-CD with 6-button pad. Honestly, I don't know how you play these games with a two-button pad...

      I guess if the game wasn't mainstream the images would have been left uncensored.

    Yeah, once again the PS1 (and Saturn) version fuckin’ slaughters the PC Engine (and Super NES) version!! Like I said before, any game on the PC Engine that has a PS1 version naturally will be superior to it because you know, next-gen (for the time) hardware, better specs, better graphics, better music, well better everything. You get ‘em, Sony! Destroy NEC in the process! And they very well did because the PlayStation absolutely slaughtered the PC-FX during that generation!!! Not to mention, Advanced V.G. 2 on the PlayStation (not PC-98) is a fantastic game in my opinion. It improves over its predecessor. Adding new moves (I think), new characters, new music and backgrounds as well as a power gauge (at least that’s what I like calling it). This must be said and the world needs to hear it: Sony’s platforms (PS1-5, you probably saw that coming) have an excellent lineup of fighting games! No wonder Sony supports EVO.
