This was my family's main car when I was growing up, we got it when I was 4. Took many road trips and adventures with the 5 of us crammed into this little Mazda. I learned to drive on it when I was around 13, and it finally blew a head gasket when I was 16 at 280k miles. Even now at 32 I still remember the way it felt and I miss the simplicity. RIP Mazda 323

Thank you for the review. I had almost exactly this one and loved it. Love Mazdas.

That model 323 was my parent's first Mazda, and they've been loyal to the brand ever since.

I had an '87 323 hatch and put on 324,000 miles through the 90's. It broke down only twice. It made me a Mazda guy. It's been 323/Protoge /Madza3 for me since.

I'm driving it today as my daily car, the engine is very reliable. The only problem is rust. It erode the chassis quite heavily :(

Good for you! My camshaft did seize once in sub-freezing weather, but that was the only major repair I experienced. I also found the front seats very uncomfortable with a lack of thigh support and swapped in a nicely padded pair from a Mercury Tracer which shared the platform. As coincidences go, I am purchasing a brand new Mazda 3 GT hatch in two days. I loves me some Mazda!

That’s exactly what I bought in 1986, my first car, brand new. Nice to see it.

Nice tidy 323 good reliable economical transport, the Ford Lasers were basically a rebadged 323.

These were great ittle cars. The hatchback version together with it's sister the Ford Laser were assembled from CKD kits in Zimbabwe. They used the 1300cc Mazda engine. Very popular, many are still in daily use there.

That was probably the cheapest car Mazda sold here in the states that year, and here it is 30 years later. So much for planned obsolescence.

I don't think cars of this era had "planned obsolescence" like the cars of today. That's why I still have my 33 y.o Mazda and there is this one in this video.

my late grandmother had one of these in a wagon back in the day. Her's was an automatic and it was gray, and it had a lot of rust, my grandfather had it repaired once but of course that was short lived!

Actually I think the lines are lovely. We still have our '90 1.8i that we've had since new. Only issue is lack of low down torque (max torque at 4,000 rpm) combined with high gearing (manual) but this makes it a great highway cruiser. Otherwise lovely to drive and faultless!

I have one, an '87 Mazda 323 1.3 carburetor GLX sedan almost like this, no electric windows, no central locking, only the rear wiper mounted, run like a charm with it's 140000kms.

And then there is new Zealand where people don't seem to throw away their cars. Cars of that error are very common here. We call them a Mazda familiar.

I grew up driving a 87 mazda 323. It broke down and my family hauled it to the junk yard when I was in college. If anyone comes across one for sale let me know. I’m trying to buy one and restore it.

i just bought bought a n 85' 1.3l glx as my first car, still thankfully has a carburetor so i can work on it.
i'm also intrigued as to what the top fuse is for as it is not on the trim/version i have

My brother had an 87 until about 4 years ago. Went 300+ thousand miles. He replaced the timing belt about every 40K miles. The brake pads were the easiest I've ever seen to change. Just some clips and the pads slipped out.

    • @FatihNasrulloh

I bought an 89 a few months ago, it's actually really fun to drive it's kind of a funny little car and it works great except just yesterday I shut it off and the driving lights wouldn't go off. I just pulled the fuse for now but how do I figure out the cause? Could it be a short?

Before they were 323 they were GLC -- we had an '80 3 door in pumpkin orange with a black stripe package. To us GLC was 'Good Little Car' or that could have been Mazda marketing mumbo jumbo.

Any reason why you never reply to comments anymore? Usually a Channel Creator will start a channel with a few subscribers and if a subscriber asks a question they're guaranteed to get a reply. Then 500 subscribers later another subscriber can ask a million questions and they'll be lucky to get a like back from The Channel's Creator and if subscriber is lucky enough to get an actual typed reply you can bet it will snow in July!.. I'm sensing that's the road you're headed down... I really enjoy your video but take care of your fans man...
