I heard his music and I heard him speak. He was a good Christian man and he spoke his feelings in his music. A longtime ago, but yet so close to my memories.
    GOD BLESS Gov. Davis.

Oh yeah... the FIRST 😊famous Country singer ever is a Texas product. Vernon Dalhart aka Marion Try Slaughter was a real-life cattle puncher in the late 1800s. When he decided to become a musician, he took the names of two Texas towns (Vernon and Dalhart) to use his stage name. He made over 400 recordings with Thomas Edison, in which he performed classical music. But it was his most famous recording in 1924 that earned him a spot in history. Dalhart’s “The Wreck of the Old 97” was the first country song to ever become popular, and also the genre’s first million-record seller. It’s also where the band The Old 97’s derived their name from.

James Houston "Jimmie" Davis was a singer and songwriter of both sacred and popular songs who served for two nonconsecutive terms from 1944-48 and from 1960-64 as the governor of his native Louisiana. Although September 11, 1899 is commonly accepted as his date of birth, no official documentation exists. Bing Search

Gov.Jimmie Davis did not write this song.. Floyd Tillman wrote it and gave to
Jimmie to record.. Davis paid Floyd a small amount of money..if you google
you will see both their name are listed as co-writters..
Floyd told me and he also told me Jimmie did not write you are my sunshine.
somone named Thompson wrote it and Jimmie paid him money for it..
This was done a lot in those days because most songwriters were poor
and JImmie was rich.. they had to feed their babies..He did a great job.
