Nah, I'm with Enya on this one. So many dystopias just feel like a standard hero's journey but with a depressing setting. "Go to the place, kill the thing". Give me the Enyan dystopia, where everything's just on fire for no reason
for some reason almost everything needs a happy end nowadays, and also everything needs to be gray instead of black and white, just give me an apocalypse with a vague ending and a purely evil antagonist
She's right, a lot of dystopia stories are like that lately. Like I don't mind stories where the mc does start to fix the dystopia and its major problems. But its like she said where its usually done really badly with all the blame put on one or two people when in reality it would be the government(s), including multiple corrupt parts of it, major businesses, bad laws, lack of some resources, overuse and/or monopolization of other resources, health issues, pollution, and a host of other random bad guys and monsters. And seeing the mc deal with all of that, whether fixing it or taking advantage of it for their own gain, can be amazing! So when its not like that its even more of a letdown.
I dont know if its connected to the brainrot and decreasing attention span, but it also feels like stories are stopping to dive deep into things and just go with the simplest route to the solution, discarding any side quests or complicated character relationships
