*How do you figure out the right stocking level for your aquariums? If you're looking for inspiration, we just released our top 5 Petco fish list: **th-cam.com/video/ybVPLHOidpU/w-d-xo.html*
I hate adding fish, I hate quarantine, but I do it. I haven't added a store fish in over 2 years, ha no quarantine, and I'm going for at least 2 more years! 1 tank has sevrums, geophagus, and clown loaches, the other fancy guppies, now on the 3rd generation with about plus 60 guppy and one hills team loach and a bunch of cherry shrimp!
This is by far the best video I've seen explaining this. Nothing else shows this step by step, or really explains it concisely and intelligently. Thank you so much for this!!!
I struggled to not overstock my 16 Gallon but by doing research on how much bioload, bacteria, filtration, and the addition of plants, I was able to get a lot of the stock I have been wanting for a long time!
My 10 gallon has 8 ember tetras, 6 Pygmy corys and 6 kuhli loaches. Going very well so far everyone seems very happy! Plenty of plants and snails and shrimp seem to help keep everything under control.
@@reverie8223 if the tank is balanced the fish eggs are going to be extra protein, fish food, for other fish. My amano shrimp are always preggo...the eggs are extra food since they'll never hatch in fresh water. :)
I want to do a 75 planted aquarium with all nano fish… so I’m a bit lost with how many. I enjoy maintenance. My experience is expert with saltwater but moderate with freshwater.
While waiting for my large tank to arrive and then cycling it and planting it, I put my fish and snails into 2.5 gallon tank. I thought it was going to be just few weeks but it turned out to be 4 months.....To make the long story short, in this tank I successfully kept 10 pygmy corydoras and 12 chilli rasboras plus 4 ramshorn snails which had at least 100 babies while in this tank....I only had one small filter, but it was heavily planted. I never changed water nor cleaned the tank, just topped it up , however, I only fed them live food. Not sure if that made the difference ( I purchased moina, rotifier and fairy shrimp eggs on Amazon). must add that I did test water for ammonia and such weekly, due to small tank size.
I wish I had seen this before I started stocking my aquariums. The more of these videos I see kinda makes me want to start over in all my aquariums so I can do better but I have nowhere else for the fish to go.
You could try selling them, or buy some fish that will eat the babies if they breed a lot, or get another aquarium that will be low maintenance or, redo the aquascape of your current aquarium with thicker substrate and more plants so you can have more fish 🐠
Those red floating fish "ambush predator" could someone help me out on what those are? Ive never seen them before as someone new to fish, and they are amazing to me. Thanks for the help!
Thanks for the video. Informative, nice shots of fish and you’re good to listen to. I’m one year into my hobby. Had a couple of fish due recently and, like you said, I learned some things I’ve done and changes I’ve made that likely caused it. The remaining fish look happy again. I try to be a responsible fish friend. I’ll get that water quality measuring kit you shared. That’ll help me step up my game. It’s funny, I had great success early on but ran into some problems once I got my snails. I don’t think my ph is high enough for them.
I have a 60 gallon with 2 angelfish 14 giant danios 5 cherry barbs 1 swordtail . . I am adding a couple more swordtails and maybe 3 more giant danios. I never test my water , I just do water changes once a week. Had my fish for years now
Changing water every week sounds like a lot of nonsense. Unnecessary in a healthy planted tank. I never change my water and all my fishes are healthy and happy.
I'm a fan of Ammo-Carb (I don't care what anyone says). It sits in the canister or HOB and if you don't need it no worries, and if you get an ammonia spike it's there to take the load. I've used it for decades. A canister loaded with Ammo-Carb can save a tank full of fish.
My 5 gallon has 6 neons 6 zebra danios and honey gourami and otocinclus. It's very well planted and has a carpet and my filtration is great. Everyone is thriving well. The colors are all there.
I’ve got 69 fish including shrimp and snails in my 20 gallon the biggest fish in the tank is a panda garra and a rainbow goby that are 3 inches and a bamboo shrimp that’s 3 inches. I have 3 corys that are 2.3 inches and I have 12 emerald eye rasboras, 9 neons, 2 pumpkin Sakura shrimp, 10 cherry shrimp, 8 amano, 3 otos, 8 horned nerite snails and 13 different species of plants it’s a very heavily planted tank with a marineland 275 hob with seachem matrix and filter floss
Can i ask around 7:38 on the video, thats a betta right? What type of fish you added to the tank? And how big is that tank? Curious coz ive been watching other videos and they said u only allowed 1 betta to a 5 gallon tank... 😔
My issue is with ramshorn snails population boom in my 10 gallon with guppies. I have a couple of plants(at least 5 different species), sponge filter, and a HOB(with 2 corse sponges and a media ball bag). The amount of waste from the snails after I feed them is insane. I need to maintenance the HOB every 2-3 days depending if I feed them zucchini/squash or just wafers and pellets those days. The plants help out a lot. I could probably go a little over a week(8-9 days) without a water change if I didn’t feed so much. Otherwise I need to do a water change every 5 days. I feed them well because I want them to grow and reproduce plenty so I can transfer them into my 40 gallon tank with my 2 hatchlings turtles. I test the water multiple times a week with either/both testing strips and the master test kit of API. Long comment sorry. Great videos and over all company. I’ve ordered plants and fish supplies and everything is awesome. I’m in California and get my shipping in 2-3 days. Really wish they would ship fish, snails, and shrimp.
I have a red tail shark on my community tank it's about 2 or 3 and iv had no trouble with it some of my fish had died off do to age but it's nicely planted and has 2 caves and 2 halow loggs

Nobody should be confused after this. and you weren't just pushing "merch". Tho, the "nitrite-nitrate" terms were interchanged around the 6-7 minute mark. Is Vera a Biologist or Veterinarian?
I always go with more fish that’s just because I always have a lot more filtration and normally I set up more than one tank andA lot of times you lose fish not everyone did you get is going to stay alive but I guess that’s just me oh and I got a lot of house plants that I let grow into my filtersAnd I do a 50% water change every Sunday
This is a great way to explain how many fish can go into a habitat. Do you have this written down so it could be handed out to people? I feel a lot of people could greatly benefit from this. How do you determine what adult size of a fish you could put into a habitat? I suggest that the habitat width be at least 2x or greater of the adult fish's length. I think 3x would be better.
I am having a problem with nitrate in one of my tanks because of a rapidly increasing amount of shrimp! I also put a huge clump of java moss in there from another tank and it is filled with tiny shrimplets which makes vacuuming it very hard.
I have a 55 gallon tank with 12 rainbow fish (boesmani, New Guinea, and yellow rainbowfish) 3 of each with four Cory’s can I add some more Cory’s and can I add something on top(if so what would you recommend)
Would 1 mystery snail, 1 betta, 5 shrimp and 3-4 panda Corys be okay in a 10 gallon? I know I’ll need to monitor the levels, but I’m getting some information from a betta group and they’re very adamant about the 1” per gallon lol.
I don't get how you're keeping your tanks so clean and perstine...my tank always has some debris at the bottom, either dead plant matter or fish/shrimp poops...
Hi Irene what do you think about black neon tetra, lemon tetra and Albino cory's in 10 gallon. six of each and if i feel compitant, i'm disabled, adding marbled hatchet fish? I've done aquariums before but not for a few years. I fancy trying black water.

Ive seen that younger bettas, and female bettas will do ok but a male might be ok also. Swordtails seems to stick to interaction with there own, and guppies don't seem to be nippers. At least in my experience.
My tap water is 35ppm nitrates so I personally change water closer to 80ish ppm, here's the thing, nitrates are way overhyped. Many people who are experienced in fishkeeping leave it to rather high levels and many people have even more nitrate out the tap than I do and their fish thrive. A little research shows that the effects nitrate has is not super well documented, and the studies where it has been well documented shows that it's actually surprisingly high levels of nitrate before there is any negative affects
My nitrates are 20 out of the tap. I have one common goldfish alone in a 75 gallon tank. He’s thriving at around 40-80 nitrates with water changes every 10-14 days. I agree that nitrate levels are overhyped because it doesn’t take into account tap water quality that varies depending on locale.
All my tanks have sumps. More water volume, easy to see how dirty your filter socks are becoming. All your heaters, etc in sump. I drill the tank with the fish in the tank. Fairly inexpensive to set up.
If I regularly test my water and ammonia stays at 0 nitrite at 0 and nitrates at around 5-10. I add in seachem fresh trace to replenish minerals for my fish is there any need to change the water?
Water changes aren't just for reducing nitrate levels. They are also for the times you just need to clean out any sponge filters, or inside the canister filter, etc.. With a well balanced tank (which yours sounds like it is) a water change would only be needed/desired once there's buildup on the sponge/substrate that needs cleaning (assuming as well there is enough gas exchange happening from bubblers and such to keep the O2 levels in the water high enough).
How reliable do you find aqadvisor to be? I used it when deciding the stocking of my very heavily planted 10 gallon and most people seem to think my tank is overstocked according to the livestock in it, but aqadvisor says in only at 78% stocking and im not sure what to believe.
Aquadvisor is beneficial for beginners, and tends to be on the conservative side when giving you percentages. It also doesn’t account for live plants. It seems like they also don’t account for the tank’s height when giving their percentages. If I have a 13” 50 gallon tank, and I only up the height to 20” to make it a 75 gallon tank, the percentage doesn’t change. Im guessing it’s because height isn’t always used as much by fish (which isn’t always the case anyways), but the water volume changed, so I’m not sure why the percentage doesn’t adjust to meet that difference in water volume.
Do you only measure your nitrates ??? Why don’t you check for an ammonia spike ? My tank often has low nitrates like MAX 5ppm but then it’ll have 0.25 ammonia….
