They didn't have all the fancy computer stuff and vehicles when I was in, but I bet that 90% of the job is still just digging holes and pounding pickets.

My father was a 1LT when he got out, but was a 12A in Germany when it was West Germany, post-'Nam. Re-mapped southern W Germany for the first time since WW2. Airborne-qualified, 9th Engineers, out of Achafeenberg (sp), W Germany. (Now we call them CEBs). We built my folks house together - he was the "foreman" over me and paid subcontractors. The only 12 series thing we didn't do together was explosive demo - only 8 pound sledgehammers for demo... but, he did mention to me as he aged, that when they built all the bridges up over the Rhine, that they had demo charges in them, preset to be blown in the event of the massive Russian tank invasion anticipated. Thankfully, those charges weren't needed. Thank you to all Army COE.

Just avoid the first choices your recruiter gives you and if you have to wait for better options, do it or score higher in the asvab. Cook, MP, infantry, combat engineer and CBRN are all MOSs you should stay far away from.

Or you become a team leader and have to go pick up your Joe for driving drunk at 2am into the wood line to later get yelled at for not knowing where he was on a 4 day weekend.
Believe it or not you can use black leather gloves instead of gauntlets to deal with concertina wire, if you are gentle with it. Wire gauntlets get tangled up if you yank it around.

When your out on a mission and if your the senior man you can do anything( within reason) to accomplish the mission. But besides that you aren’t just doing whatever you want if your a new guy

I would like to add something to my comment..its not a job for the faint of heart. Its hard and wet and cold...There days you go without food and your socks are wet and a week old. But you roll out and do your fuckin job. Cause you are a engineer.
It's very hard work, long hours, a lot of BS & spend tons of time in the field. Avoid all combat arms jobs in the army especially if you have a family.
