While it's true that Miss South Africa should definitely have been in the top 5, this isnt a guarantee that she unquestionably should have won. The ultimate winner, Karen Baldwin of Canada was stunningly beautiful and definitely was worthy of the Miss Universe title in 1982
@@galileocan I don't think it's fair to say anything unkind, but my opinion is that Karen was one of the less beautiful winners. I think Odette had made the top 5 she would have had a real chance.

I said before she even became a finalist that "Not only is this girl going to win Miss Canada tonight, shes going to go on to be the next Miss Universe". I was right. They did politics during the 1978 miss universe. Miss USA was the clear front runner, but because the outgoing title holder was that black gal from Trinibago, they choose this miss south africa to make the moment very historic: the first black woman to win miss universe is crowning the first woman from the african continent who is ironically a white woman. Shame, its a clear politics.
Politics had nothing to do with it.
Judy Miss USA that year did a great job that year, but I think where Margaret had the upper hand was showcasing personality and passion. Especially with her final answer. There was nothing about her answer that sounded rehearsed or by the book. She definitely earned that title
