    Very thoughtful of you guys to provide this kind of insight for people interested in this experience (which you have done from the beginning of your vlogs). We moved to the Dordogne from the US in December 2021 and closed on our small château in April 2022. I would offer one additional point that anyone moving to France should keep in mind. There will be a period of acclimation that has highs and lows. The language is extremely important however it is also a different way of living - store and restaurant hours are different, the medical care experience is different (not better or worse, just different), the time needed to learn enough to communicate effectively in French is a long and sometimes frustrating process, the time it takes to find artisans and get a job done can be very different, etc. France is a wonderful place to live (we are in the countryside) but the ability to adapt is critical. Long vacations in France are not the same as living here.

    Great video! All I will mention (other than that big empty glass 😅 ) Is the realtor mentioned 'after costs' being quite expensive...not always true and people bee dto realize those costs are relative. If you are coming from a property tax bill of $8000, car insurance if almost $3000, and property insurance also in the $1000's per year for a standard house here in the US...that word must be used carefully. Wishing you all the best.❤

    Lindsey, thank you for your time and information. If I were younger, I would give it a try. I hope this helps someone in the market now. I heard most of this info in bits and pieces from other chateau owners and I recommend that everyone considering buying do all their research first.

    I knew getting a loan in France was a no go . I think to u need to go to France a few good times before too before buying a house, or and type of building . I love to buy a house whether it's a town house or cottage but first I need to go to France . I've been looking at the housing market and Chateaus and there are heaps on the market. Great video on the in and outs on buying a Chateau in France . ❤❤

    Question on residency: If the chateau is your primary residence, but you are a US. Citizen receiving social security, but own no US real estate, does that qualify you for staying the whole year? Do you have to give up your US residency to live in France full time?

    • @queensescape
      @queensescape  ปีที่แล้ว

      We are not 100% the answer to that question, so probably best to refer you to the French government’s website. But from my understanding, it’s okay to be drawing social security in the US, in fact it will help to prove you can support yourself. But without applying for residency, you can only stay 3 months at a time. That said, we also have friends who apply for extensions in that time period. The French site will have the most up to date info.

    That was a really interesting and informative vlog, thank you Karen & Bo. We’re trying to make arrangements to view properties when we’re over in France next week but are having some problems. Do you think it’s best to stick to one agency/realtor?

    • @anniedodds8150
      @anniedodds8150 ปีที่แล้ว

      There have been a couple of times when we’ve requested to view a property and the agent has tried to put us off - saying ´Oh, you don’t want to look at that one, it’s close to a main road’, or ‘that one needs completely re-wiring’. Also a lot of agencies don’t even get back to you when you express an interest. We’re not looking for a chateau, just a nice house - we’re cash buyers, but are finding the process very frustrating.

    • @queensescape
      @queensescape  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bo and I tended to look online for properties we liked and most of them had different realtors, so we actually dealt with lots of realtors, arranging to meet them separately depending on the property we wanted to see. Lindsay was the seller’s realtor, but became ours too when we came to view the place.

    • @queensescape
      @queensescape  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. We had some trouble getting everyone to write us back right away or at all. I would often call them on the phone to put the pressure on. Some properties have one realtor, so not just anyone can show that place. We had realtors refusing to work together at one point so as not to share commission. But then you have good ones like, Lindsay. Be persistent to get an answer, call, reach out to the real estate office if the rep isn’t writing you back. Basically push. 😊

    I follow several American and canadian chateau owners and you can get a one year visa. One gal just got hers a couple weeks ago. I also know that quite a few foreigners get loans. Thats from talking with a loan officer.

    • @queensescape
      @queensescape  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s very good to hear. We know about the visa Extrnsions but have not heard much good about loans in France.

      Not easy, having a business & home combined! There's no escape! Keeping people happy, looking after & maintaining a château, and the grounds, plus making time as a couple. Maybe in time, once the chateau is either breaking even or making money to pay for itself. You & Bo can hire local people to assist. So that you can at least enjoy what you have and a little time away. Pat yourself on the back. it's new to you both & and you're learning as you go along. The château is happy to have you in its life! Your part of a very important chapter for both parties X

    Very interesting for those presently wanting to buy a Chateau in France.
    Different subject:
    Karen, I think that your hair would look stunning with a little bit of light red highlights blended in front to frame your face. It would also serve to give your face more color. This comment is not intended to embarras you or put you down 😢. I just ❤ to see light blond with a bit of red together! Why not try it?🤗

    • @queensescape
      @queensescape  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gracie, my hair is so flat blonde right now it is DYING for some high or low lights to give it some dimension. Thank you for that lovely suggestion. 😊😊
