Winters lifting each man up himself shows how much he cared for each of the men under his command but the lifting itself was because they had so much weight in equipment attached to them it made it very difficult to get up on their own.
The men also knew for a lot of them it was gonna be one of the last times they look each other in eyes and shake hands. Its a mental "Ill fking see you when I land brother", even though for most the men, they didnt.
@@jjack-zm4sr If you watch other interviews about Sobal, it was a lot of the same. He was just a jerk. He was a bully. He wasn't being hard to make them better, he was hard because he could be. I knew a few of those in my career as well. Doesn't mean he was a bad person really, just had self identity or confidence issues. Remember, HE hadn't been to war either anymore then the people under him. He wasn't preparing them for what he had seen and learned from.
This show always makes me think of my grandfather who was a WWII vet, though he fought in Italy. He was a PFC in the Army. He was wounded in combat when both his legs were hit by an armor piercing bullet, his tibia was shattered into thirty pieces. Thankfully he didn’t loose his legs and went on to survive and live to be 92. I still miss him…
During the opening credits, the paratroopers are shown near large cargo planes. Those are C47s and there were over 800 of them that carried the paratroops from England to where they jumped into Normandy on D-Day. During WWII, there were thousands built. After the war ended, many of them were sold in the civilian market and used until they were warn out and good only for scrap. A few years ago, as one was being readied to scrap, it was discovered to be "That's All Brother". That's All Brother was the C-47 that lead all 800 of the other C-47s from England to Normandy. Once it was confirmed to really be That's All Brother, the Commemorative Air Force purchased it and completely rebuilt it to match how it was on June 6,1944 when it flew to Normandy. It can now be seen at air shows around the country.
Winters helping up all the soldier could play a psychological role. That and it might be due to the fact that they each have to carry 80 pounds worth of gear for the jump.
Sobel grew up in a military family and he was always volunteering or enrolling in military classes growing up, and then before the war started he enlisted. This is all he knew. Many Easy Company men said they were grateful that he pushed them so hard - they credit it for helping them survive the war. Others just thought he was a schmuck.
My impression was that they mostly all despised him, it was just that some of them would grudgingly admit that the way he pushed them went a long way in making them so elite.
I was born on may 5th, Dutch liberation day. I was born in Geldrop, grew up in Son, Oosterbeek and Arnhem. All of these places were involved with Market Garden and they all have memorials dedicated to the operation. I have also attended the 50th anniversary of the battle of Arnhem, with Queen Beatrix and Prince Charles attending. WW2 has been a constant reminder in my life and has fueled in large part my interest in history.
Great review. I love when a young person finds this series. Excellent points on Capt Sobel. He was a great training officer, in fact later in life many of the man trained by him, including those who revolted against him, admitted they survived the war in part because of the hard training they received under Sobel. He was great at training but was not good in the field, he had trouble reading maps and was not good at improvisation, he could follow a plan but if initial plan didnt work he could not adept the way a leader in the field needs too. Kudo's to Col SInk for recognizing the issue, and putting Sobel in a palce where they could use he talents as a training officer without the presure of actual combat comand. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to your reviews of the rest of the series
You are quite intelligent. He's the first person I've seen who really understands Sobel. He was a terrible leader on the field, but he was great at coaching men. Everything in training has a reason, no matter how difficult and boring it may be.
He was also a very petty and insecure man, as shown by his treatment of Winters. Absolutely no good reason to place him on latrine or kitchen duty, especially after a promotion.
In Ambrose's book there are many stories about this. He was jealous of Winters, but Easy became as decorated as she was largely because of the training he gave her. He did this job well, and in Ambrose's book Winters admits as much@@Rocket1377
The reason you see Dale Dye (Col. Sink) in so many war movies is because his primary business (for YEARS) is as a technical advisor and training actors to "become soldiers" for their movie roles. He conducts actors' boot camps that whip the cast into shape and trains them to act, think, and move like real soldiers before the first scene is ever shot. He usually winds up being cast as well.
After you finish the series, there is an interview thats about an hour long that most of the clips of the old men was pulled from. Its called "We Stand Alone Together" Its fascinating and gives extra context as well as letting you put faces to some of the names from the show.
My father served in the Army Air Force and the US Air Force for 8 years, spanning WWII and Korea. His father was a doughboy in WWI and saw heavy action in the Argonne Forest in France. Everybody I knew growing up was involved in WWII, my mother, aunts, uncles, neighbors, every adult. I grew up learning first-hand about the Wars, so it doesn't seem like ancient history to me.
War is a choice. "Hop and pop" - WW2 paratroopers employed what was called a "static line" system. There was no "rip cord". The soldiers wore a harness with risers which connected to suspension lines which terminated at the big canopy. These were carefully packed into a D-bag (deployment bag) which was carried on the jumpers back. The top, closed end of the bag hooked onto a cable (the static line) which could be attached onto a fixed cable inside the plane's doorway. When you jumped, the D-bag would remain with the plane, and your fall would cause the contents to feed out of the open end of the bag; risers, lines, and then the canopy. This all happened very quickly, so it was effective for low level jumps. It further insured that the chute would deploy even if the soldier had passed out.
The canteen pouring scene sheds light to some common practices infantry do back then. Soldiers, especially infantry are required to conduct forced marches without food or water. Having to pour their canteens is just a part of the test to see who could not endure.
Sobel was an excellent training officer. And Easy company men credit him for their successes in combat. I remember a quote from another movie, “The more you hate me, the more you will learn.” However, Sobel was not a combat leader. Dick Winters excelled in that role.
Hi Imon... Very nice reaction to a brilliant series.. You seem like a very kind, lovely person, please prepare your self for this, it is all based on fact and is a heart wrenching story of the life and death of these brave young men.. It is brutal and horific.. Best wishes from France

Soebel crossed the line with the spaghetti incident. There’s a difference between being strict, being tough, etc., and being cruel. The second time he crossed the line was unfairly punishing (or trying to) Winters. That revealed Soebel for the bully he was. (Keeping in mind that the series takes liberties with the facts, and this dramatization might not reflect on the character of the real Captain Soebel.) He wasn’t exercising his power for a greater purpose, he was abusing his power. Anyway, setting aside the ethical question, Soebel’s incompetence in the field doesn’t mean he’s a bad soldier or can’t be useful. Putting him charge of an airborne training school was the best solution for all involved. His attention to detail would also make him a good logistics officer, making sure the right supplies showed up in the right place at the right time. He might have wanted to lead men into combat more than anything, but he was better suited for other duties.
You have no clue about military training, u don't think the spaghetti incident would of been found out by the higher ups, of course they approved. Moving Sobel to another training position solved two problems. It wasn't really a demotion for him and it put a combat leader in charge of the guys going in. Good reaction. Thanks.
Easy Company grudgingly said that Sobel's harsh training is what kept them alive in the war. But do NOT conflate that with Sobel being a good officer. He was on the record of being incredibly petty and focused on his own personal glory and that alone. Being reassigned to a permanent instructor role and then working as a supply officer broke him in a way that meant he tried to end himself by way of a .45 caliber self-inflicted shot to his brain and even then he botched that and died 12 years later, blind and starving in a VA hospital. Sobel's story is a true tragedy, but his own ego caused most of his problems.
Ordering Winters to "find some" infractions. That's easy, look at Welsh! That guy kept getting demoted and promoted like a yo-yo until they made him an officer. Reminds me of some of my favorite NCOs. One made E-4 3 three times before he made E-5. Another was a First Sergeant who essentially ran the Troop and he would say any soldier who hasn't been demoted is stupid. (Neither went Officer like Welsh, but in my experience, most of the good Army leaders were a little feisty)
Sobel was a glory hound. He didn't see the men's success or failures as anything of note beyond anything as a reflection of himself as a leader. The bit with Winters demanding a court martial is truncated in the series, but Sobel had tried such political games before and was told to stop by Colonel Sink. The one we see is Sobel thinking he can game the system and remove an officer he sees as a potential threat to his personal influence, power, and glory and while Winters was professional and willing to tolerate bullshit, it crossed a line. In fact, when Sobel pinned the 1Lt bars on Winters' lapels and put him in charge of the kitchens, it was a very calculated insult because KP duty is notorious as an assignment that is either handed out to brand-new guys who have no idea what they're doing or is done as punishment. He later would attempt to remove himself from the world, botched even that, left himself blind, and died of malnutrition in a VA hospital. EDIT: in the actual book "Band of Brothers", the members of Easy Company noted that Sobel (despite his demands on them), was *barely* capable of passing the basic Army fitness tests, let alone what he demanded of his paratroopers. Rock bottom for physical strength, bottom 2/3 for run time, and as their time at Camp McCall taught them, he was an absolute idiot in the field.
If you're going all the way with this...be prepared to grow, laugh, learn and suffer with these characters. The first episode is in some ways my favorite, if only for the innocence and the fact that I know what lies ahead for these men. This was when their biggest threats were "Army noodles with ketchup." I love the power move Winters makes by literally grabbing the pen out of Sobel's hand while he was abusing his power...it's brilliant, and a true story. Hard to call this a TV show honestly, it's a 12 hour Saving Private Ryan in quality...CURRAHEE! ♠
Right there with you about not realizing the veterans being interviewed were the actual characters in the story. It seemed too unlikely to even be a possibility.
Hi Imon! :) i hope you’ll read this, you need to watch also the « german BoB », it’s a mini series (only 3 episodes!) called « Generation War » (Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter, 2013), i really suggest u to watch it in german subtitled en, it’s highly rated and believe me, it’s excellent! 🙏

I appreciate your point of view. At the risk of being presumptuous, so many young women seem to be dismissive of mens actions in scenarios they will never fully understand. I look forward to watching with you. Sub’d
As someone who has never watched friends, it’s hilarious seeing peoples reaction to episode 1 mainly because of David schwimmer 😅 I have never seen friends, but Many have said they just picture Ross in this role, Im worried if I watch Friends and go back to it I’ll think the same, But I thought he was amazing in the role
The comments about David Schwimmer are why he pretty much only does theatre on Broadway now; if he does anything connected with screenwork all people will say is, "It's Ross!" Gotta be frustrating, but my impression also is he's much happier without the fake glamour of Hollywood on his head. When this first came out he was, as far as I'm aware (possible exception of Simon Pegg in the UK) the only 'Name' actor in the cast; Friend still being on the air when this was being cast and filmed. kerk
Ashley was great … her time turner reveal should have worked; both for the ingenuity and because it was her first time. Though, TBH, this would have been so easy to avoid and “earn” the feast. But I feel like they have to be agreeing to eat this stuff ahead of time … they know the punishment is worse than abstaining and getting the reward. Their self-control can’t be that bad every time.
Making them run on a full stomach of spaghetti is brilliant training what happens if they are attacked by the Germans while they are eating, what are they going to say please don't attack us now we need to digest
Why would you cut out the final scene of the planes heading to Normandy and your reaction to it?? That is such an impressive scene. Why would you cut it?
I’m glad you found another show to react to because Outlander is def not my bag…this is like the plutonic idea of a prestige series wether a war show or another kind of show.
I am absolutely sure you’re a wonderful reactor. There are two reasons I was able to watch about 5 minutes before I decided it was enough. I’m not saying this to put you down but just so you are aware of what turned me away. First, it’s the static. I’m guessing it’s the cables you used but it could be a couple other things. Second, the choppiness of the editing was a little too much for me. This was the bigger reason. I’m sure a lot had to do with copyright issues but still. I’ll probably check out another video just to see. Hope you continue to grow and get better.
The natural state of the universe like all ells in reality has two sides, A positive and negative, Yin and Yang if you will. That which Creates and tends to be most destructive, and the alternative being stagnation and decay. The only two existences of reality of which, War like any Natural disaster is simply part of the prosses. Mankind may think itself above the natural order and not so manipulated and small, but I assure you we are Not. As to War in particular, as horrible and destructive as it is and as wasteful and insane as it is it is what separates Apex predators from pray, their ability to use and talent for brutality. It's what makes them reach their best potential. It is in war that man is forced to show off its more defining qualities, like Heroism, Compassion and selflessness. Indeed, most of mankind's greatest accomplishments have been achieved only because of the Necessity brought about by such struggles. Mankind is at its best as is any such creature in nature, when we are pushed to a Do or Die situation and must struggle to achieve. As we see in the social unraveling happening worldwide now, with nothing to truly struggle against the youth must create strife to fiend their struggle.

Rock bottom for physical strength, bottom 2/3 for run time, and as their time at Camp McCall taught them, he was an absolute idiot in the field.
best thing ever aired on TV…Subbed 😊…have tissues handy 😊
They're wearing heavy packs on their backs; they can't get up without help.
Winters lifting them up is both symbolic and needed because of how much weight the Paratroopers were carrying
So lovely and wonderful your reactions Hun!!! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Right there with you about not realizing the veterans being interviewed were the actual characters in the story. It seemed too unlikely to even be a possibility.
At the time this was filmed, it was the most expensive TV production EVER. It had a budget of $120 million over the 10 episodes.
There were quite a few "before they were famous" faces in this. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy, and, Michael Cudlitz, just to name a few.
Yes! It was so cool seeing their baby faces lol
Can't wait for these reactions! First you reacted to Community, then Clone Wars now Band of Brothers! If you react to Succession next that's all four of my favourite TV shows of all time 😅
Cant wait for this, will definitely be tuning into every episode as it gets uploaded!
You have to realize that in war there is only those that live and those that die.
I was in the Marine corps way back and Sobal is the Easter Bunny compared to a marine drill instru. I would let Sobal train me anytime but I won't let him lead me into battle.
I appreciate your point of view. At the risk of being presumptuous, so many young women seem to be dismissive of mens actions in scenarios they will never fully understand. I look forward to watching with you. Sub’d
This movie was good love the video imon Nation stay motivated dream big 1 mill on the way
As someone who has never watched friends, it’s hilarious seeing peoples reaction to episode 1 mainly because of David schwimmer 😅 I have never seen friends, but Many have said they just picture Ross in this role, Im worried if I watch Friends and go back to it I’ll think the same, But I thought he was amazing in the role
The comments about David Schwimmer are why he pretty much only does theatre on Broadway now; if he does anything connected with screenwork all people will say is, "It's Ross!" Gotta be frustrating, but my impression also is he's much happier without the fake glamour of Hollywood on his head. When this first came out he was, as far as I'm aware (possible exception of Simon Pegg in the UK) the only 'Name' actor in the cast; Friend still being on the air when this was being cast and filmed. kerk
That is Michael Fassbender. Later on, there's also James McAvoy and Tom Hardy.
War is a terrible thing, but it’s worth studying. You might not be interested in War, but War is interested in you.
Ooohhhh shit was not expecting you to react to this. Bet you loved and hated it just like the rest of us😂😢
Ohhh we're definitely in for a treat
You will love this series and.... it will rip your heart out. i have seen each ep more than 30 times easy/
Making them run on a full stomach of spaghetti is brilliant training what happens if they are attacked by the Germans while they are eating, what are they going to say please don't attack us now we need to digest
hello again imon, long time no see,, saw all the viking episodes back in the day.
hehe
Why would you cut out the final scene of the planes heading to Normandy and your reaction to it?? That is such an impressive scene. Why would you cut it?
I’m glad you found another show to react to because Outlander is def not my bag…this is like the plutonic idea of a prestige series wether a war show or another kind of show.
Oh, HELLO?!?! BoB is a classic

Did you already watch Saving Private Ryan?
I am absolutely sure you’re a wonderful reactor. There are two reasons I was able to watch about 5 minutes before I decided it was enough. I’m not saying this to put you down but just so you are aware of what turned me away. First, it’s the static. I’m guessing it’s the cables you used but it could be a couple other things. Second, the choppiness of the editing was a little too much for me. This was the bigger reason. I’m sure a lot had to do with copyright issues but still. I’ll probably check out another video just to see. Hope you continue to grow and get better.
People who see combat ... can't forget ;-(
I hope the rest aren't skipped through so fast
i wish i was your editor 😢 plz can i
imon ❤❤🫦
As we see in the social unraveling happening worldwide now, with nothing to truly struggle against the youth must create strife to fiend their struggle.
letss gooooooooooooooooo
