I am a wounded Vietnam veteran, I am drawn to this song like a moth to a lamp even though it flares up my PTSD and my survivor's guilt. The day after tomorrow is Veteran's Day. There will be a huge parade, Blue Angels, US Senator etc..., but I can't go. All I can do is lie in bed and pretend to try and forget, but at the same time, those who died were my friends. Just saw the RIP posts.... And did not want to think it was true. Indeed, we have lost the greatest voice that God has ever put on this earth. Liam won't be missed, because he will always be with us. God Bless Liam and his family.
Liam Clancy - what a wonderful version of Eric Bogle's great song - touches heart and soul and so relevant, sadly even today as another old folk song goes when will we ever learn?
This song should be taught in Schools all over the World for it's anti wars message. Well done Eric for writing and to Liam and Tommy for recording. Bualadh Bós.
I remember clearly the Anzac day march's when I was a child. The boys were elderly at the time from the Gallipoli campaign, there were a few lads from the Boer War who were still marching. I think we all understood why they were marching we were very proud of them.
The Australian children's group, the Wiggles did a special version of this song for ANZAC Day last year. The founder served in the Australian military during the 80s so the song really means something to him and he wanted to honor those who had fought and died.
The last WW1 vet died as recently as 2012. Incredible really, when you think how removed most of were from the whole thing. My eldest relative was born 6/7 years after it ended,
He calls himself a Scotsman as late as the concert in Humph Hall in Sydney to commemorate John Monro's passing, in 2018 or 2019, so don't call me a moron, call him a moron.
love this version .iremember a guy by the nameof billy who use to sing this song in the green room bar in cork city back in 77/78 anyone remember-contact me
One more phrase needs to be added: And the rich got richer, the powerful more powerful, and the poor sent of to fight, die, kill, maim and be maimed so that the rich can get richer, the powerful more powerful and the middle class a thing of the past.? Once upon a time the US was a Republic, a Government of the People, for the People and by the People, but not now. Now the government of the US has become the government of the rich and powerful, for the rich and powerful and by those, in congress, the administration, the courts, the police and the press, who serve the rich and powerful. Jeremiah 48:10 (a)Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and (b)cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.

I imagined I was him. I even felt emotions stir inside me. I actually felt a kindard phantom pain . This kind of dying, in wars especially that war. The carnage the artillery caused was on every side. The war of broken face's some called it. Twenty year's later they we're at it again. A double war, army against army army against civilians. Next one, wipe out no analysing after the fact. The light's go out on this one.✌️☠️⚰️🥀
Tell that to Bob Dylan...who famously calls Liam Clancy "the best ballad singer I've ever heard in my life". No offense intended by this comment. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and to be moved by different art. Just pointing that out.

Omg, that was amazing, I'm nearly in tears.
This is my all time favourite Remembrance Day song. No other song expresses it so well.

What a splendid version of a great Australian Ballad. The song is very true and very chilling... :(
It’s Scottish, written by Eric Bogle.

As someone said about another song--Farewell Party by Gene Watson--Liam Clancy's version of this haunting song could bring a tear to a glass eye!
Bless you for the service you performed. Allow the pain to go away and live the life you have been gifted with.

I love the way Makem is clapping for him as loud if not louder than anyone!!!

The song was written by Eric Bogle, an Aussie. But I love this version.
He's Scottish.

If only the applause after this performance is the measure of excellence, then I rest my case!
@woodscritter you are so right..and both versions are haunting and heartfelt
R.I.P. LIAM
The best rendition I've heard (apart from MacGowans)
Likewise! Altho Eric Bogle- who wrote the song- does very well too...
