Very useful information, experience, thanks! I have 70D crop equipment, just browsing around to see what a move to full frame is like, issues using existing crop equipment... so thanks again for letting us see the experience. You actually point out one benefit of 4k crop... seems effectively compatible with crop lenses.
By now Canon makes it even easier to switch to full frame. The EOS R and RP natevily both support EF-S Lenses with the Adapter. All my content since the release of the EOS R was shot either on EF or EF-S Lenses.
If you're trying to choose which EF-S lens to use with your Canon full frame body, I suggest you pick none at all. EF-S main elements poke out and it takes one costly accident to just snap a picture alongside literally snapping your mirror. You're better off using the crop lenses of third party lens manufacturers because they design their lenses not to poke out of the mount. A Sigma 18-35mm for example will give you the sharp results you need for the 5DMkIV's 4k video.
And for anyone making the change from crop sensor to full frame, you should have invested in your first L lens before. The Canon 24-105 f/4 L is a MUST. it is an almost versatile walk around point and shoot lens which you will be able to learn with and use on both types of sensor cameras. It’s only negative aspect if it is, is that it is not as bright in low light situations as a f/2.8 lens. But on a full frame or a canon 80d you can push the ISO to get superb images in lowlight if you know how to use your camera.
They are working! And they work great in full frame! And Tokina, Tamron and Sigma lenses don’t even need to be remade - there is a slight vignetting at the beginning of the range, but this can be easily removed either in the camera or on the computer, just like Full Frame Nikon or Sony do it in the camera! On EF-S lenses you can even use a Kenko 1.4x teleconverter for EF/EF-S mounting
The problem with the lens hitting the mirror goes away with a full frame mirrorless camera like the EOS RP which lacks a moving mirror. If you start with a third party crop lens, there is no need to remove the bumper piece. My Tokina 12-24 covers full frame from 18-24 without the dark corners but I did have to remove the supplied lens hood.
That’s exactly what I said in one of my previous posts here. That’s also the reason why I always recommend the EOS R over the 5D cause you get alle the benefits right out of the box 🥳

Would macro tube fix this issue without exposing the electronics inside the EF-S lens? I'm new to video and photography, I am guessing it affects the focal length but I need to check.
Just as a speed booster narrows the picture from full frame to APS-C, a 1.4 converter widens the EF-S picture to full frame size. And also: the 1.4 converter does not stick out to damage the mirror. Only: Canon's and Sigma's converters stick out on the front, so that you still have to remove, widen or replace the plastic disk, but Kenko's converter does not stick out on either side. And the modern Canon R cameras regognize the Canon and Sigma (but not Tamron!) EF-S lenses as APS-C and force a 1.6 crop. No way getting around it, as far as I know.
Sure thing Flo! I'm not sure it could be that you cant go all the way down to 17mm. Don't forget that a 20mm Crop lens is way wider on a Full Frame Body 😉. So youaren'tt losing any range.

Actually since I made this Video, my mirror every now and then did hit the Lens. I just turned the camera off and back on again and it was fine. I guess the mirror is more robust than you might think 😉. But you are right. Just because it works for me, does not mean it necessarily works for everybody else.
Dont buy new lenses. People buy new camera gear every day soon as the 30 days is up they wanted get rid of it. EBay, Fred Miranda, Mom and Pop camera shops all have used excellent like new lenses. Save a few extra dollars in buy used. Allen's Camera in Levittown always has great deals online.
Exactly the info I was looking for. Too bad for the unlikes, prolly from guys who are afraid to tinker with their equipment and also want to discourage others from doing that. But the warnings are on point. It's risky but it works. I have some EF-S lenses and a T3i, thinking about getting a full frame camera to get wider angles. Being mainly an electronics engineer, I will tinker with everything in my possession and repair whatever happens to be the aftermath :D For shooting video, could even remove the mirror altogether, and the black edges could become like an interesting effect :D
What if there's no such lens? People act like there's every single lens imaginable for the full frame cameras, well, the ef-s 50-250 stm beats the crap out to the 70-300 EF lens, both in image clarity and speed, so you can't blame when people try to use that one, or the wide angle 10-18mm EF-S lens.
I only have one question...why? Canon make lenses for full frame cameras...if you can't afford them, don't buy a full frame camera. They make superb APS-C cameras that take EF-S lenses, buy one of those instead! Anyone considering doing this needs to seek medical attention!
Speed booster’s only work well if the sensor of the camera it is used with is smaller than that of the camera for which the lens was designed. This video is dealing with modifying EF-S lenses (that's the ones designed for smaller crop APS-C camera sensors) in order to fit them to full frame cameras like the Canon 5D MK IV (that's the ones with larger sensors.) I suggest you read more about speed boosters here Lewis as they are mostly designed to work with MILC's rather than full frame DSLR cameras.......like I said, anyone modifying an EF-S lens to fit a FF camera want their heads looking at! www.whatdigitalcamera.com/technology_guides/speed-boosters-advance-technology-guide-60994#fvvSlX0so8Jily1l.99
As I understand it, the Speed Booster is an adapter that allows for a full frame lens to be mounted on APS-C or Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, not for using EF-S lenses on full frame cameras. I still fail to see why anyone would want to do this. If you can afford to buy a full frame camera but not the lenses then you have definitely got your priorities the wrong way round. Buying EF telephoto lenses for APS-C cameras makes sense for 2 reasons...if you ever upgrade to a FF camera, you'll already have the correct lenses for it and in the meantime an EF lens will fit an APS-C camera body and give a 1.6 x increase in the field of view, so a 300mm EF lens will give the same field of view as a 480mm lens on a full frame camera. Please note the disclaimer that Atti Bear makes, he hasn't done that for no reason, he's done it as a warning that this mod could have disastrous results!
What about mounting the very sharp 55-250 stm on a teleconverter, taking advantage of the STM and the much clearer picture quality compared to the 70-300?
Have you figured out a replacement part to cover the exposed electronics? Cheers!

Joana MLo can you post a link for the adapter?
...but if you get it wrong it's going to cost a lot of money - is it worth the risk?
Actually since I made this Video, my mirror every now and then did hit the Lens. I just turned the camera off and back on again and it was fine. I guess the mirror is more robust than you might think 😉. But you are right. Just because it works for me, does not mean it necessarily works for everybody else.
My personal solution is... rest on APS-c!
Wait! This is illegal!
It's far from illegal. It's your gear so you can modify it any way you deem necessary. But don't expect waranty claims to go through 😉
@@AttiBear that is a joke
Being mainly an electronics engineer, I will tinker with everything in my possession and repair whatever happens to be the aftermath :D
For shooting video, could even remove the mirror altogether, and the black edges could become like an interesting effect :D
You sound a lot like me. But at least you probably know what you are doing 🤪
I would not risk it.. if you can afford a 2-3k camera, you should buy the correct lens
With the EOS R you don't need this hack anymore ☺️
What if there's no such lens?
People act like there's every single lens imaginable for the full frame cameras, well, the ef-s 50-250 stm beats the crap out to the 70-300 EF lens, both in image clarity and speed, so you can't blame when people try to use that one, or the wide angle 10-18mm EF-S lens.
why not buy a speedbooster ?
speed booster + cheaper lens = just buy a full frame lens
maannn you speak like you're really high!!!! But keep up the good work of sharing knowledge!!!
OMG
Handsome
Thanks 😁
Silly video. If you can't afford FF, then go for APS-C body (7D is very good).
I only have one question...why? Canon make lenses for full frame cameras...if you can't afford them, don't buy a full frame camera. They make superb APS-C cameras that take EF-S lenses, buy one of those instead! Anyone considering doing this needs to seek medical attention!
Stoprobinpeople Blind what if you want to use an ef-s lens with a speed booster then its a very useful video

You're an idiot lol
What about mounting the very sharp 55-250 stm on a teleconverter, taking advantage of the STM and the much clearer picture quality compared to the 70-300?
