Fascinating to see Petrov play this just a couple of years after Kissin played it at Carnegie, which Petrov was backstage at. Of course, Petrov had it in his repertoire long before and Kissin had played it since the Tokyo and 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition opening concert. But certainly Petrov brings out far greater power and also a darkness - whereas Kissin with his more laser type playing (at the time) was focused more on clarity and a bit on some of the dissonance. What a treasure this video is - as it gets close to the end of Petrov's top playing - and we lost one of the more underrated pianists who the West never really appreciated as much as they should have.
Prokofiev would approve, his first choice was Richter, but this playing brings out the composition and music, pure joy to listen to master Nikolai Petrov
23:30->, for one example, mountains above any interpretation of today, slitty dress/wunderkind included. Perhaps one had to actually live through a military life/war to know how it would and ought to sound.

This is a monster pianist of the wunderkind.
This kind of pianist, you don't mess with.
This is my preferred interpretation of Prok 6th piano sonatas of the several I have heard this evening.
Very beautiful and sensitive music.
RIP Maestro
45:30 N.Kapustin was sitting at the seat.

The pianist that best understands this piece, at least to me.
17:48 Petrov plays the licc?🗿

@@zvezdinki7998- I would not say "close to perfect", since he misses the final chords in the right hand, sadly. It's still a great performance though!
