Sound Deadening vs. Thermal Insulation [HEAT TEST]

- If you've been following Fat Fender Garage for a while, you know the difference between sound deadening and insulation pretty well -- Most sound deadeners do just that, quiet things up in the cab. This becomes a problem when you just have sound deadener and nothing to insulate heat, as the material has a good chance of conducting heat already. That's why we exclusively use the Restomod Air Thermal Membrane here at Fat Fender. It's a great product that does two in one, and is a necessity for someone who wants max efficiency from their air conditioning system in their truck. We conducted a heat test to see how accurate our real-world experience is, watch to see the results!

As I had once a complete fail experience with a restomod German van I worked on that I could barely drive because of engine heat transfer to the cabin ,I realized that on any build, heat and engine cooling control is one of the most important thing ,it will make the difference between driving your dream car all year around or only when it's cold out (AC or not..!!)..I picked up on really old MORGAN cars blue prints and they are still using specific wood for their fire walls and chassis parts...I built mine for a sleeper Turbo 5 cyl VOLVO using a wood contruction , aluminium sheets and pieces of heat protection material (for SAAB Turbo battery casing)and the result is amazing in term of heat control,sound and insulation...!!

@@mahmoudazim6340 I draw then cut with craft paper the exact size of the fire wall (included holes & passages for wires & lines/cables..) then had a wood shop cut (walnut wood) in two pieces ,I made the aluminium sheets 'sandwich' my self (added exhaust protections sheets from a crashed Audi A8) then bolted it on the stock firewall before reinstalling the engine..(the wood+ aluminium sheets + exhaust liner added 2.5 cm to the stock firewall).

@@mahmoudazim6340 I actually did not invent anything ,but I was very inspired by the way British car builder MORGAN constructs their cars by using specific wood brands for decades ,for their chassis and other key parts of their build(fire-wall)..for the YT videos..,well ,I built that specific firewall for my car and a few other parts..but it"s done now..I don't intend of fabricating other fire walls since the one I installed on my Turbo Volvo is still 'perfect..!!..I was just giving ideas & advice for people who forget to deal with that specific part of any DIY/swapped hot turbo car..!!..actually a friend of mine can't drive his SAAB 900 turbo in summer because of the heat coming from the engine & floors..!!!cheers.

Why you make the wood into 2 pieces
And from the direction of the engine is the fire wall stock or your hand work?
And do I understand right when you said Aluminium sandwich so the 2 sheets of Aluminium is covering the wood sheet? No
how much temp will the adhesive stand?
I was looking up these materials for a completely unintended purpose 👀 a much less stress idea using it more at ambient temperatures. Well to retain body heat. Also I didn't intentionally look for sound deadening material so this went from survival clothes to a ninja outfit in my mind 🤔
Can you put this on the firewall in the engine bay? I already have the other stuff under the carpet.
Not necessarily true I put sound deadening in my nephews truck or rather he did and he claims to have a lot cooler temperatures in the cab

kilmat 50 bucks- yours 269 plus triple the tax.... kilmat and carpet foam much better.
An a/c working well should blow about 50 degrees F cooler than ambient at the vent, not 20.
I’ll have to try this next time it’s 20 deg outside and snowing….didn’t think my AC system could get the cab down to -30 deg. I hope I don’t die!
It's how much it cools the air inside the entire cab, not what's coming out of the vent
@@heavenleigh111 50 degrees below ambient at the vent equates to about 40 degrees below ambient in the cab. The temp at the vent directly effects the cab temp. Using vent temp gives a stable baseline to accurately measure cooling capacity. It's the only way to accurately test if the a/c is working properly.

I watched a guy install the heat barrier dynamat makes and it cut the heat by 100 degrees.

So you're saying if it's 100 degrees outside on a summer day, and that barrier is 100 degrees difference inside the car. That would make it Zero degrees inside. What you're saying is you could freeze water inside that car he installed it in??? Please drop link of said video.

Is their anything else that would make this more worth while for 200 buck I just did my truck with the kilmat then noico foam insulation and it was around 160 for 72sqft of each Material took longer for sure but the results where incredible almost a 40 degree deference in the Temps from sitting in the sun all day

Two words: thermal emissivity. You can't make accurate measurements with an IR thermometer like that. At the very least you would want to put a piece of black tape on each material to measure off of.

This does look like a great product, however for a heat test I would place the samples side by side as heat from the lower sample will rise slightly impacting the measurements of the upper piece. Cool stuff, thank you!
