I'm almost certain Walter has a passive increase in likeliness to find rare stuff. I played three 30-day games with him. I've literally NEVER found the walking cane in any other play through. But with all three playthroughs with Walter I found it within the first 5 days on a skeleton. And even better all three times I found the eye bone too, and two of the times I found ice and fire staffs.

It was probably Walter's...erm...hat thing. (I know the hat has a name but I can't remember it.) When only a little bit of health is gone, the hat will actually negate the sanity drain. Of course, the more health gone the more your sanity drains.
I guess his hat is very confined so he can no longer think about his horrible wounds
He loses sanity under 108 hp and he doesn't benifit from his hat's 1.8 sanity a min since one of his quirks are no sanity gain from clothing

i know i'm late to comment but wow, given walter's abilities, with sufficient ammo i bet he could even beat misery toadstool...though, that's probably not realistic cause that'd take literally about 1,961 marble slingshot ammo (misery toadstool has 99999 hp, each marble pellet does 51 dmg...*more quick math*..yikes, at 10 pellets per craft, it'd take about 197 marble chunks to make enough pellets to bring misery down)
