In the book the Oompa Loompas are African Pigmies, but when they were preparing to start making the movie the director realized that having African Pigmies might be viewed as slightly racially insensitive so someone on the production team said something to the effect of, "Well what are we supposed to do then? Make them orange with green hair?" and that's what they did! Who could be offended by a race of people who don't exist?
Between Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the latest one in 2023 Wonka, the original movie is still my favourite of them all, cheers Gene Wilder

Interesting fact they couldn’t find enough dwarfs in Germany because they had been killed off in WW2 so they had to go to other European nations to find them
