I have this radio. The radio will sound much better if you open the mic casing and then drill/poke a 1mm diameter hole in the rubber membrane that blocks the mic.

I have my G90(about 4 years) in an Eylar box with a 12-amp hour battery toybox antenna and homemade 4:1 and OCFD. You have a nice setup. I'm stuck on 80 meters and do nets in the evening usually 100-1000-mile QSO's, they are amazed that I make it on 20 watts.

I went with the 6100 for many of the same reasons, it has a bigger screen and inbuilt battery, the only down side is a slightly lower power out (10W max). One good thing about the 6100 is that it's possible to boot it off a MicroSD card and run an open source front end inside of the stock WITHOUT having to burn the rom, so you just turn off and remove the SD Card and your back to stock again. Also for prepping opening up Full TX is a software change over TCP (it has Wifi and Bluetooth), so you can use it for CB bands too. So far I'm loving the large screen for SDR.

@@emanoeldeoliveira8943 It's just as good or better than the G90. Best find somebody who has one and see for yourself. At the end of the day if you insist on an Elecraft quality radio best buy aElecraft radio, and pay Elecraft prices. 🙂

Love my Xiegu G-90 - have talked to Panama on 20 Watts on the HHH Net, no problem. Love the CW Oscillator capabilities too!

Good review! I found one at the Dayton Hamvention swap meet last month for $300 - including the fan and CE-19. I’ve been wanting a separate HF radio for awhile for POTA and camping, and this thing is awesome. You’re not kidding when you say it will tune anything. I forgot my EFHW last weekend, and I cobbled together an “emergency” antenna from Walmart speaker wire. The G-90 tuned everything I threw at it. Go take your General exam, Dude! Just study the questions (answers) for a couple of days beforehand and you’ll be golden. It’s as easy as the Tech exam, IMHO.

I have one, and have made my first 40m contact with it. once you work some of the quirks out, it is a great radio. pair with a Digi-Rig mobile for digital mode operation and you are getting near the the feature set of a high end shack in a box from a Japanese manufacturer. You can also get an amp made by Xeigu that can allow you to transmit up to 125 watts!

🇦🇺😎👍You have many options in the US . Down here a short time ago I was trying to find a shop that sold these types of radios. All I got was a lot of blank looks and confused stares when I asked questions in regards to upper / lower sideband sets.. It seems all we have to choose from is cheap UHF hand held radios and car to car communications devices. $882.00 AU purchase price over the net , unbelievable …..good video

Concerning your remark at 4:04. The G90 cannot be bricked due to incorrect firmware updating procedure. If you do encounter an issue while updating then remove all cables from the G90 and leave powered off for 30 seconds. Apply the power cable and the USB cable and power on and try again. Always attached the USB before powering on and detach the USB cable before powering off.

After owning a G90 over 2 years...What a fantastic radio it is!!!SUPER for POTA, camping, etc and everyday usage! This little radio with only 20 watts has a real punch behind it!!! It has A learn curve like most of the new radios today but very doable!!! The company really stands behind their products! I have been a HAM for over 45 years and I can honestly say THIS ONE IS FOR YOU!!! I got the fan unit for it also! THE BEST TUNER EVER!!!!!! 73
    PS THANKS FOR THIS REVIEW!!!!

i managed to pick up a g90 second hand a few month ago, its now in a comms it w/ a retevis RA25/Anytone AT779UV and the HF antenna im using is a JPC-12 vertical, having to lurk on CB while i sort out my foundation licence but cant complain with the kit so far, cant really go wrong with the g90 its like the baofeng of the HF world. not top of the shelf but an aggressive pricing for what you're getting and is rapidly becoming the gateway into HF

By replacing the 5 volt peremetric regulator with a switching one, you will reduce the primary current from 600 to 300 mA. in this transceiver.

Got on air with mine for the first time this past Sunday, running into a Buddipole, and first QSO was the Madeira island off the coast of Spain.
Didn't expect DX for a first contact with the G90 so I'm thrilled!

I've been a ham going on 40 years and I've owned some pretty nice radios along the way. But, recently, I bought a G90 and have to say it's a pretty nice radio. Now, it is quirky and takes some getting used to but, once you figure things out, it's a solid performer. I find that 20 watts is all you need under most conditions to make contacts, check into nets etc. I've even worked a lot of DX with it using and end fed long wire. Hey, get one while you can...you won't go wrong. Ivan VE7IVN
