Default partitions can also make the full system fail or behave funny when a script tries to create the proper partition. So some dude is sending data with a timestamp in the future for some reason, when the partition for the proper dates gets created dit could easily trigger an error, so they are not even safe. But as the poster says if you don't have an alternative write an alert the will read the default partition and alert you if there is something on it.
