I just thought of something else.
Probably the more effective aircraft for direct ground support was the A 1 Skyraider.
      Two A1 Skyraiders from the
1St Speical Operations Squadron Sandy 7 , piloted by Capt. David Morse and his wingman Sandy 8, heard
Hambletons call over Guard, immediately vectored to his location and loitored over him giving ground support until out of ordnance and stayed making mock runs at the enemy to keep them busy and also spotting targets for the fast movers and other air assets ,thus keeping Hambleton safe so he could rendezvous with the real Hero in this rescue,U.S. Navy Seal
Thomas Norris and South Vietnamese Seal Petty Officer
Nguyen Van Kiet who infiltrated deep into enemy territory by a small sampan upriver to the rendezvous point where they located and rescued Hambleton ,at times just yards from ground troops on the both banks of the river, at times under small arms fire.
This rescue was and is one of the most bold , dangerous and costly rescue attempts in American history .
There is SO much more to this story than just the air portion.
No doubt everyone involved did an amazing, nearly impossible thing and are held in high regard for thier unselfish bravery.
Thanks Reapers for doing this mission , things like this need to be remembered along with the brave soldiers, sailors and airmen who risked everything to save one American serviceman in the face of impossible odds.
      Their motto,
      That Others May Live.

If there's an A-7 module in DCS, try with that plane. It was in service with both USAF and USN squadrons at the time, and carried 2x bombs with similar loiter time at ground level. Plus, was designed as a bomb truck, while the Hun was designed as a supersonic interceptor.

Guys, if you try it next time, keep the huns fast. Above 350kn it does perform a lot better. Simba liked it more with extended flaps, because the added lift worked against the drag-due-to-alpha, which is a lot in slow speeds. Keep it fast, don't pull to much AoA and don't get below 350 ;-) But great reenactment anyway👍

Is there not a Cobra to send in with the Huey. It is probity model in DCS correctly but I had a friend who was a waist gunner on a huey. He told me there was a big difference when they arrived on scene with and without Cobras. He told me that without everyone on ground turned and shot at the Hueys. When they realized there were Cobras with them they turned and ran.

gotta focus on flying the plane first, then focus on the battle second. So many videos result in failure because of unnecessary crashes. Need to take your time and gain airspeed after strafing the target. Also all strafing runs should be pre-planned and everyone should know what everyone else will be doing before the mission begins, making it up as you go is never a good plan

My uncle flew F-100's in Vietnam. Earned a Silver Star on a mission where he and his wingman where called in for close air support on a Marine platoon surrounded by much larger VC battalion +. When He told the ground troops he could no see who was friendly and was worried he would drop ordinance on US Marines He was told "doesn't mater, where all dead in 10 minutes if you don't het them (enemy) anyway". After expending all bombs etc he continued strafing passes until out of amo despite multiple hits on aircraft. He then continued to buz the enemy with below treetop passes until he was low on fuel and had to return home. This allowed for the US troops to withdraw to safety ..... afterward there was found >200 KIA largely due to the 2 F-100s.

A little advice from a former quote professional end quote --
"Bad smoke, Ignore it," wastes way too much time. Just adjust point of impact from the mark.
    The call is:
You this is me (Fastmover callsign, FAC callsign)
IP (designated before first fastmover comes in/preferably before anyone takes off -- example/ summit of Hill 5447 designated as IP 3-Alpha)
Heading & Offset (from IP to target)
    Distance (from IP)
    Target elevation (altitude msl)
Target description (tanks receive different love than troops in the open)
    Grid (or Lat/Long)
Marking (white smoke, green starburst, laser, dancing girls, etc)
Friendly pos (ordinance should fall parallel to the good guys, never over their heads)
Egress heading (don't wanna have them exit in Anaheim where some Mickey Mouse with an SA can ruin your fast mover's vacation)
Fast movers run a racetrack high-low-high
FACs control traffic and come off line while Fast movers roll through.
You were not horrible, but airborne FAC is like sex with a marble statue: it's f_@#!ng hard! 😆

  • @ardyzink7928
    @ardyzink7928 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

And, see, all the fun isn't a gang fight at angels high. Good mission work..... also, a suggestion on making marking runs .... when you egress, stay low enough to cut the lawn, zig zag....then do a zooming climbing turn to reverse your run back to the contact area. (it's not always a charming idea to do that right over the hot spot) IF you are clawing air right after a marking, the target you present to the ground enemy almost becomes stationary ... and you are expending lots of energy to fly off doing that. Very interesting to watch. And yes, it is a hard mission to pull off. Ya' done good. PS: your call sign for those mission types is SANDY plus designator. SANDY 1 or whatever.

Nice one. Historical note about a point made by Matrix. The Viet Cong were largely destroyed after the 1968 Tet Offensive (a huge propaganda victory, but a Pyrrhic victory in military terms). By 1970 the Vietcong were essentially eliminated and areas that were too dangerous for US and South Vietnamese forces in 1968 were safe by 1970. This is one reason US forces withdrew. The end of the Vietnamese War was in 1975 was made by North Vietnamese regular army (PAVN) forces (who had failed in a regular invasion some years earlier). The US and South Vietnamese 'won' against the Vietcong, and with the US withdrawal it was South Vietnam that years later against PAVN forces (after the US Democratic Party abrogated a treaty with South Vietnam promising to replace damaged equipment - a clear signal to the PAVN that the US would not oppose the communist invasion). Not a lot of people know the structure of the Vietnam War and Hollywood always portrays it as an eternal 1968. It's much more interesting than that. Thanks to all the Vietnam vets out there.

It's a great listen and talks all about THUD pilots and the book mainly focus's on the job of the "wild weasles" and i would love to see a F105 mission by the reapers hunting SA-2 Sites. Sidenote: the book actually gets the politics of the era dead on too.... a rare thing when everything is political now.

Very interesting episode - I now understand why the US could not win that war. Here the NVA ran around in the open instead of getting away from the smoke into the trees.

Was it the A-1 that was "Sandy B", the CAS plane that bombed Cole Virgil Cole in flight of the intruder? I'd vote to see this scenario played out again with a Sandy B alternate (if the A-1 isn't a mod that I'm forgetting exists).

    • @xenaguy01
      @xenaguy01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

"Sandy" was, I believe, the A-1 Skyraider prop plane. So named because one of them returned from a mission not only shot full of holes, but with soil ground into it's belly, as if it had skimmed the sand trying to dodge hostile fire.

Blue, it was a Sandy who bombed Cole, who was mortally wounded and had a ZSU-23 parked right next to him that had to be put out of action.

I thought the only survivor of that downed EW aircraft was named Gene Hackman

Definitely seems that the rockets fragmentation isn't accurately modelled, at least for the size of the bang that's set off

I wonder what the damage would have been if the OV-10's were committed to a CAS mission with heavy gun runs along with 2.75 rockets?

Loved this. I know it's not realistic but I'd like to see Frogfoot doing the attack runs. It's a bomb truck, "BoomBoom for everybody!"

Why don’t you organise you’re take offs so that your slow movers take off first, the fast jets take off a few minutes later?

I think the aircraft that may be best suited for taking out the baddies would be an AC-47 or "Puff the Magic Dragon," which was fitted with 7.62 mm miniguns. The AC-47 carried 54,000 rounds of ammo

Lt. Col. Hambelton was known as “Gene”. He had been a missile systems officer with access to nuclear launch codes and such. Why some Dipshit thought it was a good idea for him to go flying around in an electronics warfare plane with the possibility of getting shot down and captured is anybody’s guess. There was no not getting him out. He ended up being rescued by a Navy seal and a Vietnamese Navy commando. They rescued him in a very small canoe/boat. The movie sucked ass. The only decent acting was done by Gene Hackman and to a lesser extent, Danny Glover. The movie was so technically ridiculously inaccurate it was hard to finish. There’s a lot of shit they could have gotten right and didn’t even make the effort. Things such as: the Air Force never flew chinooks. The Air Force has never had warrant officer helicopter pilots. There were numerous Forward air controllers that talked to the survivor, not just Danny Glover’s character. Gene Was an avid golfer and had played for many decades. They gave him distance and direction by calling out various holes at various military golf courses. That way the enemy that was in fact listening could not figure out which direction he was heading and for how long.

Can't wait to see you guys try your hands at the A-1 Skyraider. Maybe do a light-CAS competition between the O-10, A-1, A-29, P47, Pampa, etc?

you did well guys but maybe using napalm bombs or cluster ammo for the infantry and less he bombs, and more people, maybe 2 teams each with 2 OV-10 and 2 F-100 Sabres could do the job

Instead of concentrating on the enemy to the north, a corridor should have been made in the south west to allow the Huey to get to its target and get the hell out.
