My only problem with modern barbie - besides the performative facade she uses to cover some stuff - and the OBVIOUS lack of fashion taste, is the quality. We can have opinions, but the fact is that While mga is always trying to step it up and challenge even more the concept of how much more quality they can offer for the price point, mattel does the exact opposite, they are always trying to think of all of the corners they can cut and how to cheap ou the maximum amount of details ... the only one that has kept consistent quality no matter what decade/year is mga...with barbie extra (personal experience) their clothes feel like paper, the materials are printed, their shoes are never painted, their hair quality is... famous for being disgraceful, and they cheap out even on pleating a skirt by making it only pleated in the front, or by molding leg warmers. Idk. also lets not forget the vile pixelated faces that are even worse than regular budget screenings. Not even capable of spray painting SIGNATURE dolls. Like everything feels like it has been “cheapened out” to the max. From the hair to the face to the clothes, while with mga it feels lime it has been MAXED out. And people still complain abt MGA prices when not even for $150 companies like mattel can give us the quality and craftsmanship of a $35 MGA doll….

i wish barbie would actually dive into fashion, like subcultures such as goth and e girl and harajuku, because its somewhat relevant currently and just rlly nice looking, but unfortunately its a corporation so they wont lol
It all just makes me sad. I had a good collection of mid to late 90s through early 2000s Barbies from my childhood, stuffffing a smallish to medium suitcase to the brim. I massively regret selling them in bulk at a garage sale before my niece was born. The new ones she has are just so poorly made compared to those I remember. The three or so older Barbies she has from Good Will are just like the ones I remember. Needless to say not even nostalgia can keep us on the Barbie bandwagon anymore.
She's switched to receiving MGA dolls since OMG came out, and we've been blown away by their quality. She only has 1 Rainbow High doll so far, compared to her 5 or 6 OMG, but we especially like those, and she'll be getting more for her birthday/Christmas
Yeah, Barbie’s quality is generally pretty terrible, but I just can’t fully abandon it for MGA because I genuinely love the new diversity. The one issue I have with MGA is it will never have facial diversity in its dolls due to stylization, and that just forces its dolls to lack the same level of character that new Barbies have. However, if MGA released a line that had different sculpts and face designs for each doll and was as racially diverse as modern Barbie, I would probably never go back.
Also I do genuinely like Barbie’s new signature looks dolls, they’re simple but have very nice designs. Barbie is great for faces and mtm dolls are great for articulation, but I agree that the fashion is WAY too cheap on most dolls. I remember when fashionistas were worth collecting for the outfits but now they’re only good if you want an interesting looking head to put on a different body.
I hope the new strawberry shortcake dolls have scented hair again. I remember when I was little one time my older brother got me a strawberry short cake doll for my birthday or Christmas I can’t remember and she had scented hair like candy strawberry and I loved it so much
I hope so too! On occasion I'll come across an older Strawberry Shortcake doll at an antique shop or something and she'll still smell soooo good.
I don't want them to have scented hair i'm really sensitive to scents i have a 2009 raspberry torte mini doll and i barely played with it bc of the scent

The had these remake vintage toys like pound puppies and strawberry shortcake I saw at target and she had scented hair. Even the plastic ones I played with when I was little had scented hair, so they probably will

I’m SOOOO hyped for sindy esp the black one since black are sooo expensive, I hope they come out with a deeper skin tone but I love her hair! I’m getting her for sure by any means necessary 😭 dream Ella is a joke, a very very funny joke, props to MGA for giving me a good laugh this is so embarrassing for them though, color reveal is too overpriced for the quality so I don’t bother with them, I like the new fashionistas though, and the new Barbie extras use too pretty of faced sculpts and hairstyles to be dressed the way that they are but I’m probably gonna buy cereal girl because I have a disease that makes me buy stupid things, I’m def getting all the rewinds, and the new American girls are lovely as well but I’m gonna have to try to convince my in laws to buy me one because I’m a cheapskate 😩 and I’m hyped for the possibility of a Pom Pom pudding doll

I'm so disappointed with Dreaming Ella, when I heard that MGA was gonna make a "Barbie competitor" I was excited because, as much as I like the fashions of the OMG, I prefer more realistic dolls, I was expecting something like Barbie but with MGA quality, and we're getting dollar store crap instead, also, as beautiful as the Rewind dolls are, I wish Mattel could stop pandering to 80's nostalgia and make nostalgic 2000's products

I have not bought one RH! I really prefer LOL OMG dolls, because they are more edgy and fierce. I just don't like the pretty pretty RH faces, and their clothes are too basic for me. The 1940s Hollywood look of the blue slumber one is nice though.
@@magdlynstrouble2036 I relate to this a lot. I only have 2 RH dolls, Sunny and Krystal, because I love those colours and I'm just always itching to add more darker skinned dolls to my collection. LOL OMG has really scratched that itch and I just adore the loud and detailed styling of their dolls. Robin, the blue RH slumber girl, is very appealing to me though!

They both developed out of Tammy, back in the 60s when Ideal were licensing her internationally Pedigree got the licence for the UK and Takara got the licence for Japan. So has the same basic starting point.
I like series 1 of Barbie Extra and thought the line would get better, but it’s going the opposite direction??!! I am very excited for the new line for American Girl!!
Big agree on Barbie Extras. First wave was great and *almost* there for me, just needs a bit of tweaking. But every line since has gone in the opposite direction, increasingly more thrown-together and themeless.
I was thinking this as well. I had critiques for the first series but most of them were really solid except for those pets that I wish they'd stop including. It's like... after that skateboard girl and the fringe jacket girl that line has just been off the rails.
The pets confuse me to end. The only explanation I can think of is that they're left over from another, unreleased toy line that Mattel decided to throw in with the Barbies last minute. Like, they're just so out of place and don't even match the themes of the dolls they come with.
@@DarlingDollz The pets in Barbie Extra are very "Ok Mattel, tell me you learned nothing from Monster High without telling me you learned nothing from Monster High" because that is one of 2 lines that included pets and did it very well. The only other one I can think of is Cave Club and you can see the MH influence all over that.

My biggest Pass is the wave 3 Barbie Extras - it feels like they've missed the point of their own dolls? Like, Extra =/= throw-random-stuff-together.
Biggest Yass: Barbie Rewind (OMG! YES PLEASE CAREER GIRL) and Pullip x Care Bears. I've never got into Pullip before but I don't think I can pass on a Cheer Bear doll.
So I specifically collect sweets themed dolls (and green is my favorite color) so weirdly I kinda like the breakfast cereal Barbie Extra doll? She might be the first one I buy. There are a couple from the previous series that I've almost grabbed, but they just haven't quite grabbed me.
I'm here for more of the Sanrio dolls for sure!
I like the styles of the kaleidoscope line though there's definitely been a quality downgrade and that paired with the limited release does feel like it might be the swan song for these dolls. 😢 I'll be ordering them online.
Mattel has the money, I dont understand why they don't hire more fashion professionals to design the dolls outfits. There's so many unique and interesting trends existing in various fashion circles right now and for some reason mattel thinks that mish mashing a bunch of gaudy cuts and colors together makes for a good outfit

Oooo, the new ag line looks pretty interesting! I’ve been wanting them to try new things for awhile so I’m pretty excited about that!! Also, I’m so glad the strawberry shortcake reboot got a redesign because the designs from 2017 looked horrible. Though I can’t say I love the current design it’s definitely an improvement
I came back to this for a rewatch and just wanted to thank you for being an opinionated and critical doll reviewer. I think you and Jeffrey Steinman are my favs! ❤ I've been trying to watch other doll collectors but I'm not crazy on huge haul videos and the kind of collecting where people buy 2 of everything and don't have much of a critical eye so I have to take certain channels in small doses. Lol
Thank you! I actually told myself that I would never do a haul video on this channel. I know consumerism is a big thing in doll collecting regardless, but I just want to contribute to it as little as I can. Some channels are just "buy buy buy" or "look at my $800 haul!" and that'll never be me. I'm not a completionist collector and I don't buy dolls I know I don't want- and I think some collectors really do need to hear that's okay lol.
Mattel must be running out of fresh ideas for Barbara 😉. I believe going down the retro path is a great idea. Resellers appear to be cleaning up with retro dolls. Your commentary is just wonderful 😂❤️

When I got Samantha and Josephina I told myself I didn't need anymore American Girl dolls and then they go and release Maritza.
I think the Rockstar/Rock Line collection has music in the instruments. Considering that Garrett said the Boo York dolls would've had moulded clothes with removable skirts if they had been turned into singing dolls, I can see how some of the markup of the Rockstars could've been due to the potential music playing function. Target probably did their part in the markup too. (The boxes say "watch the music video on youtube" which makes me think the band can play a part of a song together.)

Courtney- LOVEEEE her stories, once you get past product placement (hork).
Her design is really stupid boring . Like what the hell. Especially when you compare her to the rest of the historical line which is swimming in blonde dolls with light eyes. AND if you decide to believe the rumors which state that the white Costco exclusive ballerina doll is a scrapped 1920s character who was developed before AG’s diversity statement. The other Costco exclusive dolls match up to currently existing Truly Mes, while the white Costco doll has distinct blonde ringlets and blue eyes (not to mention lined eyebrows which have been phased out).
Her first collection release is adorable, the second one just feels like a cheap cash grab. Feels like something you could make on their create your own clothing maker that you get a free wavier for when you buy a CYO doll. I know a lot of people were confused and disappointed with the second release because well… it’s weird and we expected a crystal starshooter costume.
World By Us: FINALLY SOME DECENT MODERN CHARACTERS. Honestly rather impressed. They learned from their “street chic” collection and actually consulted a hiphop artist when creating the promo song. Each doll is super unique, just *chefs kiss*. I already ordered Maritza. We went from having a not even half assed Black GOTY to having two amazing Black characters, one of whom is the face of the collection??? I hope they expand the line in the future, I’d love to see them talk about Appalachia (maybe someone from rural Appalachia who moves to DC? They could talk about illiteracy here through the character.) and perhaps get a permanent physically disabled character after Joss retires, as well as an asian character. (GOTY 2021 is rumored to be Asian and possibly twins so that’s why a bunch of people think they didn’t make an Asian WBU character). Since it’s set in DC, they could also talk about the rampant russophobia in American gov. positions. There’s just so much this line opens up.

Like when the world by us leaks came out, someone got mad because they weren’t crediting her for the leaks (but they aren’t even her original photos). I also saw a comment yesterday saying someone will “block you if Yvette is your favourite doll” because she’s white passing. People are just extreme and sometimes it feels like you are policed with what you can and can’t do

I collect AG and since I grew up in the 80s, I have most of Courtney’s collection. The colors should be more hot neon NOT just bright pink and yellow. She needs boxed nicer outfits because she’s the only historical with mix and match. She also needs more shoes but I do like the new jellies. Yes! To a Crystal Starshooter outfit and where is the Laura Ashley dress she wears to the tv studio? Or a birthday set!!! I wish AG would have a bigger item like a mall food court for her.

Curious to see the Strawberry Shortcake line... I really like Dance.Stylez from FailFix so I'm hoping they'll make a good doll of the orange girl. I'm also kind of surprised by how Hairdorables has been going... I hope they really do have more coming soon.

I like the RH Slumber line and Robin is particularly enchanting but I will say I wish their second outfits were more fleshed out. They aren't on the same level as the main line dolls in terms if styling imo.

Yeah, MGA's overconfidence with Ella is showing big time. If you ask me, they're getting too comfortable. It comes off as if they think they can put the most minimum effort into something at this point and still have it be a massive success. Methinks they need to be bullied a little harder.

I was hyped for Gamma Babe but she was the worst case of QC I've ever seen. 4 large knots in her hair and that wasn't the *only* problem. I was disappointed by Ella, too. I was hoping she'd have more fierce face paint and be something closer to My Scene or something. (My Scene is not from the same company, but you know what I mean.) I can see Ella is geared towards younger children, though, and little kids would like her.
They're definitely like, okay for the overall price point. Like they're not doing anything /wrong/, but if a kid has to choose between Ella or, say, Sparke Girlz- I don't imagine Ella is going to be a strong contender. Even Barbie has the legacy behind her that puts her at an advantage.

Why do the clothes on the Extra dolls clash?
YAY I’m so glad they added a kuromi to the line! I’m not a huge fan of her hair though I wish it had been black and pink or black and purple instead and I kind of wish she had more of the gothy edge of kuromi.
The world by us dolls looks cute, the one travel collection I love, my problem is that MGA keeps milking my wallet lol I bought like 3 barbies, and a few other dolls like MH but at like flea markets or eBay the dolls so yeah, this year and bought like 9 OMG dolls and 5 bratz, but of course these are my preferences, mattel is cheaper and doesn’t rlly have good quality and raises prices high, while MGA has better quality and stuff that doesn’t seem too expensive at least to me they actually put detail and time and effort into the dolls or maybe I’m delusional idk

I’ve been bored and tired of Mattel and their dolls for years. Barbie. Meh. Do girls even want Barbie anymore.
Surprisingly I see a pretty even amount of purchases of Barbie dolls and MGA's LOL or RH dolls as a cashier at Target. I think LOL is the more popular one with kids, but I remember at Christmastime the Barbie selections sold out quicker than the LOL OMG Remix or RH dolls.
Maybe parents prefer buying the safer Barbies, but they end up in the thrift stores faster than the MGA dolls!
my 9 year old likes OMG and rainbow high better. She mostly just plays with Chelsea when she plays with barbies.

I HATE the new collectors omg doll like I mean I have crystal star and she is probably my last and favorite omg doll. You can certainly tell that MATTEL bought up American Girl, because they're making the same mistake as with Barbie. They've inverted the age aim of BOTH by dressing Barbie as a spoiled 12-year-old delusional fashionista, and American Girl as a 30-year old Tess from "Working Girl." Mattel, get Barbie BACK to her grownup teen roots and let American Girl BE a little girl! And PLEASE, toss out the cheesy, low quality outfits that scream "petroleum-based fabric vomit!"

I wasn't expecting to see how bland and basic they made my girl Strawberry when I started this video-
I grew up with every version of Strawberry Shortcake save for the classic (though I have an original Lime Chiffon doll I bought at an antique shop), and each design brings a smile to my face; from the big hats of the 2000s series, to what I now realize was the return of the striped socks from the original- not to mention that each series held on to the same basic structure for the art style. Even the locations for each version felt memorable. This is just... generic girls show set in normal modern cartoon city. I'm not saying things can't change, I just thinks its a real downgrade.
Sorry this is more from a cartoon enthusiast than doll collector POV, I'm not allowed to collect things because it "wastes money" and I'm "too old now".

The direction of the new series is definitely strange to me. Prior to this, I always considered Strawberry Shortcake to be a very relaxing franchise. A bunch of friends who hang out together and bake sweet treats and support each other. Even the iteration before this when they were business owners, it still had relatively the same vibe.
But this one is so ubercapitalist and high-energy and like, stressful? And it just feels like the antithesis to the Strawberry Shortcake I grew up with so I really don't know how to feel about it 😭
