Super video! It just so happens that I was editing a "talk show" project when I stopped to watch this tutorial and it got me wondering...could I use this same technique on what I was working on? Here, the problem is not the sky, but rather, the host and his guest's white paper notes that, unfortunately, show in the master wide shot. Normally, I mask these out and dull them down which, while not difficult, is still time consuming. Anyway I followed your instructions, save for picking a different hue. At first, it didn't seem to work, but then I changed the blend mode from "normal" to "exclusion" and it worked like a charm. 'Glad that I tuned in. This was a wonderful idea of yours!

I have the opportunity to film at The Blue Cat Lodge from the Ozarks on Netflix. One of the coolest things about the Ozarks is how EVERYTHING has a glim or blued effect that blankets the entire show and gives it a very unique look. In your opinion, can I get something similar using this particular method? Once I've done all edits and move into color correction, I want to overlay the effect over the entire video, so it all works together and has a feel of its own. I'm shooting everything on IPhone 11 Pro in 4k 60FPS. I have all video in the can, and literally just downloaded Davinci. I used to work in FCP, but life happened, and I didn't edit for years. I started my project planning to use Imovie, but the limitations were killing me, and after editing for about 20 minutes, I quickly went and downloaded Davinci and jumped into the TH-cam rabbit hole. You've been a great help, and I'll continue to drink from your well. I studied Davinci about 2 years ago, and never did the project I anticipated (life happens). I am familiar with linear editing, but I want to dig in and make this project great. I appreciate your videos : )
Thanks! Sounds like a great project and a perfect set to achieve a distinct look. I played around with an iPhone 11 Pro, but don’t own one. Pair it with FiLMic Pro and I think they can get some good results. Resolve will certainly help make it look more film-like. I’m intrigued that an anamorphic lens is available for $120 for it. The effect will work for sure if you have backlight from the sky. Resolve’s best asset is the color page, so you can certainly shape it to anything you want there as well.

That’s just my preference. The plugin can be applied directly to a single clip. So if you want to place some text on top without the effect or for other reasons.
Works great for some drone footage I have, except some bright objects in the bottom of the frame turn blue as well? can I set this for the top 3rd of the screen?
This is easy to do in the Fusion Page with a mask node. Without nodes you could use cropping. Duplicate the clip and stack it on the same timeline (hold down the ALT key and drag the clip to duplicate). Use cropping to crop out the top 1/3 on the bottom clip and crop out the bottom 2/3 on the top clip. Applied the technique in this video to the bottom clip. This method is looking for a light source. I developed this when trying to quickly deal with a blown-out sky in some shots I was working with. When you set the shiny regions, you will be able to see the light sources of your shot. In my scene, I have some reflection of the sky from the buildings, which I can blend easily with the plugin settings because the main source of light is the sky. If the buildings in your shot are more of a light source than your sky, your choice is to use another shot, mask the buildings (easy if the shot is static or the building is on the same plane the whole shot) or rotoscoping.
I’m sure there’s a video on this somewhere but I’ll ask here anyway, how do I darken the sky? I have two shots where the sky changes drastically from dusk to practically nighttime even though I shot the two shots maybe five minutes apart.
That must be some extremely poorly shot footage. The footage I used also had trees. Make sure the spread is set to zero. Adjust the shine threshold and H/V ratio to dial it in. If there is no detail in the foreground (entire shot was shot with wrong F-stop and blown-out), you may need to re-shoot. If it’s just the sky, I’ve always been able to get this method to work.
I hate it when you do something once and then you try to do it again and you do exactly the same steps and it doesn't work. I've restarted my computer, I've done everything. This program is so freaking frustrating sometimes.
FYI This does not work! Notice the plug in changes the foreground also.. I can’t alter the foreground trees and people. This technique causes the FG to darken. So I appreciate your video, but it’s flawed almost instantly.

Since the glow node is available in the Fusion Page, it can be used this way. From your clip’s output, connect a glow node as the glow source. Use a background node to connect as the effect mask to the glow node. Set the background node type to gradient and make it feather the way you want it. In the glow node, follow the video, expect, experiment with the composite types after the next step. In the settings tab of the glow node, check apply mask inverted. Set the channel to luminance. Change the high low range from 0-1 to around 0-0.178 - make adjustments as needed depending on your clip and the amount of light. Using this method will slightly darken the whole clip, but you can color correct after or tweak the settings.
I love the look of the skies. Incredibly stylized and could easily work for a superhero-type video

how do i get the plug in
It is built into the free version and Studio version of Davinci Resolve. Nothing else needed.
this doesnt work for my footage because so much of the overblown sky is thru tree leaves....frustrating.

No. It work on the free version also.
