Max Yuryev As usual great work.... 👍
Wow! Surprising results! I might as well save some money and go for the Micro instead of the Videomic original. Thanks
Was this placed above you?? Have you done a video on all the different mic placement, both boom and lav??
To be honest, the Deadcats are kind of expensive for what they are, probably because of Rode's branding. I recommend getting a $5 one from Ebay or Amazon, which works just as well. Be sure to check the dimensions before you buy though. Also: 10:59 -> Don't forget to "Always Rig to the Right!"

Test starts at 11:00.
Thank you. I respect Max but it's just too much preamble.

Thank you man. Commenters never fail to disappoint xD
@@Hitbox_unKnownlegend
they all sound pretty similar, but their names sound even more similar
They look even similarAR
I agree!! i was confused with their names lol
He should’ve done the test outside with extra noise to probably then notice the difference
No they dont
Sorry this video is a bit long. When I do short versions of these people end up asking my to give more opinions. Start at 10:20 for the sound comparisons!
Max Yuryev thanks. I always like the longer format video. But i know alot of people don't. Maybe just mention it during the intro of the video that way you don't loose viewers or people trying to watch on lunch break etc. Great video though.
Max , can you do a review on the pixel MC-50 and compare it with the takstar SGC-598 ?
I prefer a more accurate review and more watch time than some short information lacking reviews. You literally helped me get off the fence and order the videomicro.
Max Yuryev i puted same links for every microphone
Its actually 11:00 your welcome
I found a videomic pro at a yard sale for 10$, I don't think they knew what it was
Omg
Soooo lucky!
Probably just thought it was a “toy” of some sort
I'll give you $8 since you've used it since buying it 🤣. I just picked up a canon m50 for $200. Yard sales, offer up and fb marketplace! Now that christmas is coming you'll see people selling stuff for dirt cheap.
Epic
Great video bro. I wish there was some timestamps though so I could skip to parts like the audio comparisons.
KARL ROCK!
AHA FOUND YOU HERE
a wild karl appears
big big big big big big shout out for comparing them with the unified VOLUME/GAIN! because if something is louder we think that its better when actually it is not. so thanks for that man!
Great comparison Max! I have the VideoMic Pro and I was thinking about getting the VideoMicro (for my compact vlogging setup). Now I know I’m getting one for sure!
I’ve had the Rode Video Micro for Vlogging for years and I love it!! I have been using my VideoMic (dinosaur) for video on my boom pole for a couple weeks now and really love it. Thanks for this video!!
I agree, the rode video mic was the most pleasant! It was the third one. I liked it on the boom pole and on top of the camera. Thank you for this helpful video.
nice comparison bro, and still usefull in this early 2020. need to compare it all once again with rode NTG. thanks
I just bought the $59 one, and I'm so glad it was this high on your list :)
My mom gave me the the same mic for Christmas and the manfroto trypod and phone holder which works !!!👍🏾
facts...bought it for it size factor
I think the video was great, it was very complete dealing the pros and cons in a way beginners would understand. Its not easy to find videos that have the sounds tests as you provided. Only downside the decibel chart didn't seem to match its location to the mics behind, so it was hard for me to follow as i am very new to the product names and specs. overall loved it!
VERY helpful, even 5 years after you made this video!
12 minutes into your video I decided which two mics I would buy. You did an amazing job with these reviews. I and my subscribers thank you.
For someone like myself who films mostly all motorsports like motocross, go karting, cars, it would be awesome to hear these guys in action with some engines roaring to see how they handle it.
EXCELLENT video with rigorous methodology and useful result data. Waaaaay better than the usual hot air of TH-cam. Thank you, sir, for taking audio recording *seriously* although that is obvious from the quality of your own output. Subbed.
Man, I know this is an old video but this was excellent so informative. I just picked up a VideoMic Go for $38 and I think I'm going to flip it now and get a new micro because this video had all the info I needed. Great job Max, I might even consider the TakStar which seems pretty unbeatable for the price
I hated my original Video Mic I bought in 2009 because I was using it on a Canon 60D with its horrible audio! Looking at this, it appears to have a new life on my a7rii 🙌 I've upgraded my blog setup and I'm glad this is one less thing I have to buy. Thanks for the comprehensive review Max!
Thanks for watching!
I have the original VideoMic too but it's time to upgrade to VideoMic Pro. 20db gain is really beneficial to clear sound. I can't wait to try it when I go to Thailand and film some old buses they should capture the engine sound well hopefully with VideoMic Pro
I can't thank you enough for that sharp, detailed and pro comparasion, this is super helful in choosing the right mic.
This is the most comprehensive comparison of all rode mics. This video has also added my desire to buy Rode video micro, since that the only price I can afford. My QUESTION is: 1.is it possible to hang video micro above head using boom pole?
2. Does it still pick our voice loud.?
3. Can I use third party extensions cable to connect video micro to my Canon 700D?
4. I have bee watching some of your great video. Love them all.
5. I have subscribed as well.
6.PLEASE do answer my questions.
7. Sorry for my bad English since I am Indonesian... Hehehehe
I used to work at this tech company where we recorded internal stuff like external speakers and important company wide announcements. When I got there they had the Rode VideoMic mounted on a camcorder and that was the kit I was working with. I was not impressed with the Røde to say the least. I actually ended up using my personal Zoom h4n after a few times and to me it just sounded sooooooo much better. Mind you I'm actually a newbie when it comes to audio stuff. I had the H4n because I was a gear junkie that wanted to start doing more video stuff but never really did.
Thanks for changing my decision from buying VideoMic Pro+ Plus to VideoMicro
Always come back to this video years later! Been an owner of every mic mentioned in this video and the tests were super accurate. After using all of them for years I still prefer the video micro (as a vlogger)
Seems like the $149 microphone was the most balanced for vlogging purposes, I just wish it didn't lose that high end.
Can't thank you enough for this video, Max! I've been shopping for a new on-cam mic for a while for my Lumix G7. Now really to choose between the VideoMicro and the Takstar you are using.
Our audio really needs focusing on now. We had some great cameras for our sailing vlogs but the audio is letting it down. So appreciate this review, it's helped steer us in the right direction!
So all in all - the Video Micro is the best for vlogging, thanks so much, great review!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
*VideoMicro performs really well!* What a nice surprise.
I will definitely go for the Video micro.
Best for buck and vlogging
Ha awesome. Not even in the market for a mic and I watched the whole video.
Thank you man, i'll buy the TAKSTAR SGC-598 :)
I really like the direction you're channel has been going lately. Great great ideas and content. Keep it up. I have stopped watching other channels after they get bland or soft trying not to hurt manufacturers feelings etc. Keep advocating for us consumers. Thanks max
Amazing detailed comparison 👍👏👏👏 thank you
Four years later, and their lineup is pretty much the same lol. Thanks, almost got the VideoMic Go, but after watching this ordered a VideoMicro!
Interesting comparison, but this test would have been better if your room had had some sonic treatment. The Røde VideoMic sounds best actually from seemingly not picking up the room reverb as much as the others, so if you'd had a treated room, the result might have been different.
I didn't see the link for the comparison video. I was able to search for this microphone and your comparison came up..great!!!
Think I'm gonna go with the micro for my camcorder and my iPhone. The included windscreen is a nice bonus, as I will be taking it hiking. From one Max to another.. Thank you! Much appreciated
Hey we both published microphone reviews on the same day. *High five* - but uh.. it looks like you worked way harder on yours. Great work buddy!
this video is just pure gold. so much value in 20 minutes. thanks a ton!
What a showdown Max! Thank you for comparing all of these Mics, it can be confusing with how similar they all seem. Also now I want that diffused light in the background! Lolol!
Looking for my first mic for my DSLR and i was torn between the baby micro and the Go... This set my choice straight! Thanks!
Surprised you say you don't recommend the original Video mic at the beginning it seem much better than the go and overall best for voice fidelity. Can you tell me why you don't recommend it over the Go. Great in depth vid by the way.
Exactly. Price/performance wise this even would be my pick of the bunch 😊
Great review Max. You covered all the bases. It made my decision even easier. Long video but packed with info = worth watching the whole thing.
Thank you so much for this video! I learned that I need to just have my microphone closer - instead of throwing money at my audio problem. You saved me tons of money, because the mic I already film with is quite decent, and just isn't fully utilized!
As always Max, nobody does videos like you.I couldn't be happier, I have the little micro but never knew it was that good. Cheers
Please be warned that this video is incredibly misleading.
As someone who has been working with sound for a very long time, I have to clarify something.
When you're working with sound(editing it), it's a much better idea to cut frequencies than to boost them. The reason why the more expensive microphones capture more sound is so that during the editing process the integrity is kept. So, no. It may be a lot easier to boost, but by doing that, you actually degrade the sound. It is destructive.
I know it may sound weird, but that is how it works. Again, when editing sound, it's better to cut than to boost.
Thanks, im learning all the time !
With that in mind, would the Rode VideoMicro still be a good option for a shotgun mic?
@@brandonkriegerKNSS It really depends on what you're trying to aim for. I would suggest a mic with a high pass filter, a good noise to sound ratio, something with -20db to -10db to 0 to +10db to +20db.
Wealth Coach Kahnju Ecleo what would you recommend then?
@@BrandonKrieger From the ones in the video? If you know how to process audio, buy the most expensive one. If you have no knowledge about it, buy the cheapest. In the world of sound, it's either you buy the cheapest or the most expensive or you buy what your money can buy, but there are items that are just for luxury (made for audiophiles).
The problem with this video is that it only talks about rode on-cam mics. You can check the specs and find something equivalent from other brands.
Thanks Max, that was the ultimate Rode comparison. Well done sir.
Thanks, good review. Was not thinking to spend a lot of money for mic, but was not sure if the micro good option. Now I'm sure.
Super useful video! I just ordered a RØDE VideoMicro Compact last night then watched your video afterwards (yeah I did that the wrong way round I know), but how good it was to hear how well it holds up. Although I have no idea how to boost Bass in editing, so I will be looking to see if you have a video showing how to do that next (if not there is a video idea for you). :-) My camera is a Sony a6400 so I am guessing that will be similar in sound quality to your a6500, so was great you mentioned the camera you used too. Thanks again for a super useful video.
Interesting test, what mic (other brands as well) would you recommend for a Canon 7D? Bang for the buck
New baby, holidays and STILL dropping excellent videos. Get some rest, Max!
What a great video! This makes me feel even better about purchasing the Røde VideoMicro last year!
Just picked up the rode video mic. Thank you for the in depth video over these mics thanks.
Thank you so much for this comparison. I'll go for the micro, there's a sale coming up.
rode must hate you now.....anyway i'm using videomicro too, great little guy
How does it work indoors from 12-15ft away? Still hollow sounding?
I have the video micro to it’s great!!!
12:46 Mic tests 😉 I gotchu boo
This is one of the few times when lack of budget is an advantage lol, thanks for the review.
I needed this, I just started my TH-cam channel and wasn't sure what mic to buy.. it amazes me that the cheapest mic did better than the most expensive mic smh
My mind is blown
Thank you for this, I'll order my 59 dollar mic asap🤣🤣
also get a snowball mic for when you do voice over! Also pretty inexpensive ( its what i use)
Use a smallrig setup that places the video mic pro plus to the side, or even a dual hotshoe setup that places the video mic pro plus to the side away from the EVF.
Thanks for the review. I'm surprised at how good the little Micro is for the price!
Thank you for this comparison - looking for a backup mic for travelling, either the VideoMicro or the VideoMic GO, and this sold me on the Micro!
very helpful. I got the Canon M50 and I decided to go with the Pro plus based on your video. THanks
nice comparison, but I miss a bit outdoor test on the wind and surrounding noise. I think thats environment where would we hear the differences
This is a great video! Thank you for sharing. I feel like I prefer the takstar you are using. Could you kindly respond with your honest opinion between the takstar and the video mic. Which one of the two would you choose in terms of sound quality.
I've been using the video micro for almost 2 years, I chose it because as a traveler sometimes I don't have access to batteries, it is extremely portable, and yet delivers extremely good sound, I use it with my Pentax k3II.
Wow, this test was so revealing and has steered me in a good direction. Seems moving the mic close is THE most important thing by far but honestly none of these mics sounded good to me, I feel I get better audio with the XY mic on my Zoom H5. Your video really saved me from buying something I'd be unhappy with, thanks for taking the time to make this excellent comparison.
great information... i still ended up buying the most expensive one, i think it all depends on preference... i have a problem remembering to turn on my microphones, even in a professional environment. So, while i'm freelancing, i'll be forever forgetting to turn on my mic and the most expensive one will cure me of that problem... also, i think it all depends on what you are using these mics for, not everyone needs them for youtube, podcast, or something of that nature... but i believe that ANY mic, besides the onboard camera mic, will be 100x better... just my opinion.
After buying the $150 VideoMic I learned the Nikon in-camera mic is pretty good. The VideoMic has a slightly fuller sound, unfortunately, it also records the autofocus much better. When you buy a longer cord and a stand you can put the Rode mic at a distance from the camera to eliminate the focusing sounds. For on-camera use, these mics seem a waste of money. (I haven't tested sounds recordings at a long distance from the camera.)
With the Video Mic GO, on a lot of cameras you have to change the input from auto to manual to cancel out that background noise. Also that noise can be from the wire
Such a good comparison - I keep coming back to this as a point of reference :)
You can actually reverse the mount on the old Videomic (the big one with the battery) so that the camera shoe mount lines up with the back of the mic, so it doesn't stick out beyond the tail end.
I got the Micro. Quality seems very good for the price. Plus I have 2 Tascam DR’s
Thanks Max for an honest comparison.
that micro is a PERFORMER. It works perfectly for me for how I shoot. If it only had a bit more bass then it would really be PERFECT.
Your video saved me $200. Thanks for settling this decision.
I ordered from BH with your affiliate link. I’m looking forward to shooting with the quite affordable mic!
It would be cool to see a head to head on the VideoMicro vs. $25 mic. I already have the Micro, and have been eyeing the $25 one as a 2nd because of your videos...
(Of course...I could just cough up the $25 and see for myself...lol)
Use both, they are cheap :) I use the $25 one when booming and the VideoMicro for run and gun.
Thanks for all the info Max I'm looking to buy one of these I'm going to be using it on my Canon 6D
I'm going to be using it outside in a voting situation it sounds like you liked video micro compact you think that's the best one for my use thanks
Hello Max! I just wanted to thank you, I appreciate the way you make your videos, it helps a lot to make a decision when you are going to buy something to have someone explaining and testing everything in the way you do it.
Much love! Keep up the good work and wish you the best.
thanks for the info ( hi 4 years later lol), i got the micro, many amazon reviews said the micgo has a clicking problem
For those who are having a hard time hearing the difference between the mics I suggest putting the video speed up a bit and it is extremely clear the differences . Nice video 👍 was very detailed and helped me to make am informed decision
Great shootout! Myself, I have a VMPR and cheep VideoMicro and I completely agree with you that the cheeper mike sounds much better. What I also noticed is that the comments that I make as a videographer from the behind of the camera sound extreamly muffled and low quality with VMPR and much better with VideoMicro. I think it would be great if you could add your own voice recording from the behind of the camera, and not only brown noise rejection test.
This really helped me make a decision on which microphone to get for my Nikon D3200. Thanks!
I am buying a rode micro! Thank you for you the info!
Great review! How about Comica mic? They seem also great. Can you compare them?
I think the $25 mic you are recording on sounds just as good....if not better imo !!!
Hi Max, We have the IDOLCAM VlogStar V2 shotgun/Lavalier microphone in one, can we send you one for the next mic review you are doing?
For me this video explained a few things and I have much more clarity ~ boom boom!! Longish, I'd agree but then again it did move alone nicely too.
Great video. If you're shooting with the micro indoors, do you still need the furry cover?
I've never even thought of mounting my rode videomicro to a boom pole. wow, what an insight, thank you for such great idea!
I liked the Takstar too...got my rode video mic for $20...but it tends to have more low end than the Takstar with the HPF on...
Great vivid comparison Max , but what I want to know is which mic will do a better job recording live music in a quite or noisy environment? Thanks
Does anyone know if he had the mics directly plugged into his camera or plugged into some sort of mixer for the tests?
Yeah, I own a Canon T3i/600D and it has a nasty hiss at higher audio levels.
So if anyone is having that kind of issue, you're gonna need that +20 DB option so you can lower the in camera audio to kill the hiss.
for sure getting a videomicro. it performed great and the price tag is just too attractive compared to the others
The Micro was great for the price, i don’t remember why I ditched it but it was def worth the money. The “Go” is the worst value for the money, it doesnt make a bit of difference. Ive owned both the Pro and the Pro+, I hated the Pro because i would forget to turn it on. The Pro+ has auto on which is awesome but I honestly dont notice $300 worth of audio quality when I’m using it, ever
Thanks for this review. You just saved me over $200!!! 🙌🙌
Which is best mic
Thanks a lot for this lovely comparison. I saw lot of videos but you cleared all my doubts.
As a new comer to video. I really appreciate the in depth explanation.
great video...although your link to Micro is incorrect i went ahead and purchased. however mine delivered with a RED shock mount. does anyone know how/where I can purchase with a BLACK shock mount and BLACK cord? most important is the BLACK shock mount. thanks
