COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - LSU coach Kim Mulkey understands dominance and saw it again on Sunday.
“It’s South Carolina, in my opinion,” she said flatly, “and it’s everybody else.”
Kamilla Cardoso had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Zia Cooke scored 17 points and the top-ranked Gamecocks (25-0, 12-0 Southeastern Conference) stayed perfect with an 88-64 victory over No. 3 LSU for their 31st straight win.
In the showdown of Division I’s final two undefeateds, it was no contest - something Mulkey has had experience with in the past.
Mulkey led Baylor to three national titles, her crown in 2011-12 coming with her 40-0 team. It won’t surprise her if these Gamecocks, already defending national champs, pull off that feat this season - especially the way they handled the rising Tigers (23-1, 11-1).
“They have things that we don’t have and a lot of teams in the country don’t have who aspire to be there one day,” she said.
That was obvious from the start. South Carolina broke out to an 18-2 lead. LSU cut things to five a handful of times, including early in the third period, but could not come any closer.
Aliyah Boston finished with 14 points and nine boards.
The game, billed as a showcase between reigning AP player of the year Boston and Angel Reese, quickly become a highlight reel of South Carolina’s experience, talent and depth.
Boston and Reese entered this with a combined 39 double doubles this season. Instead, it was the 6-foot-7 backup Cardoso who collected double figure points and rebounds.
Reese, the 6-foot-3 dominator, couldn’t get going against the Gamecocks’ withering inside presence, going 5-of-15 shooting for 16 points and four rebounds for her first game this season without double figure boards.
Boston, South Carolina’s career record holder with 76 games in double figure points and rebounds, also came up short with of that standard. Not that it mattered as she twice blocked Reese’s shots in the third quarter as South Carolina took control for good.
Reese held her hands up, wondering where the foul was as she sat on the court.
Boston was grateful for the attention that led people to fill the building and tune in on TV. Her team’s approach, though, was simple: “Ehh, it’s just another game,” she said.
LSU cut a 10-point halftime deficit to 45-40 on Reese’s inside bucket midway through the third quarter. But South Carolina closed the period on a 19-8 burst finished by Brea Beal’s second 3-pointer.
Her teammates rushed her after time ran out, celebrating like they had won a title. The Gamecocks sure proved who runs things this year in the women’s game.
“When you have that type of commitment, you’re going to win games like this,” Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley said.
The sold-out crowd was loud and raucous from the jump and went crazy when Staley, a Philadelphia native, came out in a classic Eagles’ Randall Cunningham jersey for her team’s Super Bowl Sunday warm up with LSU.
The Gamecocks then gave them even more to yell about as they took off on an 18-2 start the first six minutes that threatened to run the Tigers out of the building. Cooke scored six points in the surge while Brea Beal had a 3-pointer and a three-point play.
Alexis Morris led LSU with 23 points.
Boston and Cardoso each had three blocks for the Gamecocks.

Angel Reese has is one of best post up and finisher in women's college basketball. She's plays very strong down low and on the boards.
Thanks for admitting that. Angel is a rough player who has to set her game up. She can look bad when she's out of control, but her rebounding is phenomenal. She really shined in the Final Four. She made most of her shots and really played smart

This game was over by the end of the first quarter. LSU was drained by the end of first half. S. Carolina has large roster of great players with a lot of height. It will take a red hot shooting team with some luck to beat them. S. Carolina is winning the battle in recruiting too.

Winning what recruiting battle? LSU has the #1 class... and that doesn't include the transfer portal. If I'm the #1 team in a Conference and the team thar was in last place 2 years ago is now my top competition in the Conference and that team has the #1 recruiting class, I wouldn't claim I'm winning the recruiting battle. BUT kudos to Dawn Staley! Her program isn't going anywhere...you're getting sell outs, your still recruiting at the top... but Kim Mulkey is a winner. One question, how long did it take Dawn Staley to turn South Carolina from a last place SEC to first place? Did Dawn have the number one recruiting class in her 2nd year at SC? No. LSU has nothing to hang their heads about. South Carolina is better amd deserved to win, but LSU is going to have more size and depth next year. Bet that.

But those new recruits will need a season, unless they are like SC's freshmen of Cooke, Boston and co, who can come in play elite competition off rip. Angel Reese is a good player but overhyped. Mulkey needs her to develop post moves, so in situations where her size isn't an advantage, like we saw against Aliyah Boston, she can use her post moves to score. 5-15 shooting is abysmal.

I can tell you guys never played basketball because South Carolina has more bench players which means depth. LSU will play better next time when they come to LSU stop trying to take credit away from being undefeated. Both teams are good. Let's see next year when LSU has the number one recruiting class coming in. South Carolina is the better team for now.

Idk, something was off in this game they called fouls on lsu on any little contact that they had with sc but sc was being really physical with lsu and they didn't call anything idk whats happening but they gotta be fair i guess.

There was a 3 foul difference between both teams. The difference is. You had a guard who shot 30 times. Or near. Shot selection and when you fouled was the difference at line. Bit either way. The gamecocks would have won

The height difference and athleticism was so evident in this game.
LSU paying the price for a soft schedule. SC has played much tougher opponents.
I preface this by saying I don’t follow LSU closely: After seeing this game , I see why there has been a lot of talk about them. I think they have a solid squad with tons of talent. However, there was nothing I saw from Angel Reese that lived up to all the talk going on about her. Don’t get me wrong , I think she’s a great player, obviously there has has to be talent there to be averaging 23 pts a game this season! This was my first time getting a look at her game , and besides her tenacity , physicality, and sheer drive to go for shots , rebounds, blocks etc, there wasn’t really thing about her skillset (ball handling, foot work, moves) that made me say “damn she’s a baller” like I found myself saying over and over about Morris! I know SC played tight defense on her , but even for shots that weren’t falling for her , it never looked in control or like there was much ability to maneuver and create her own offense aside from trying to muscle and force in the paint.
Again this is my first time seeing her, and players aren’t defined by one game. I guess hearing her name in the same conversations as Aliyah Boston, Hayley Jones and other player of the year contenders, I expected that I’d see why in this game. I know it takes so much hard work, dedication , and sacrifice to do what they do , so I don’t want to diminish any of that as I sit and type from a computer. I love her passion and swag. I have no doubt that she will continue to work on her game and grow as a player, and go on to a very successful career.
The Bri Beal the defender on her plus Fletcher made her look average u can see best in her team,, her effort,pride her level not there with these defenders on her

Once she develops a face up game, she will be tougher to stop. A 15ft jumper will open up her driving especially with her being a lefty.

UConn and South Carolina are programs built on depth; the "next woman up" mentality pushes them through big games. LSU isn't nearly as good a team as their win-loss record would suggest, South Carolina is the only team they've played this season that's currently in the top 25; the tigers got used to either cruising past some of the worst teams in the nation or "hard fought battles" against middling foes. Against a solid schedule they'd likely have 4-5 losses already.
I think the only team that could match up well with South Carolina would be a fully healthy UConn with Bueckers and Fudd. But we'll never see that matchup since Bueckers is out for the year and Boston graduates this year.
you could look back to 2022 & watch the 2 matchups they did play.
Take a look at the 2022 NCAAW championship game. UConn was fully healthy and the Gamecocks defeated them for the National Championship last year. They had every player you named

Attention to everyone saying LSU is overrated and feels some type of way over their soft schedule. Kim Mulkey didn’t know she will have some of those top recruits this season before she created the schedule. After the schedule is created you simply the play what you have. Next, weeks before the South Carolina game Kim literally said she didn’t expect to win against them nor Tennessee but try keep the game close. If LSU had a crappy schedule this season SC would not have sold out the stadium just another game like the others. The Sec tournament will be interesting and March Madness will be great as well. Even if LSU would’ve won doesn’t matter they still have to play the rest of their games on the schedule.
It should not have matter if Kim knew about those players coming. And who is to say Kim did not know they where coming. People act like these coaches and players don't do business under the table and out of the media. Kim should want to play harder teams regardless. After watching last night they are overrated I really thought the game would be close under 10 points. For a coach to say she did not expect to win I would not want my daughter playing for that coach at all. That's like the teams Dawn reached out to before the season don't want to play SC until Zia and Boston leaves. This is slap in players face like the coach has no confidence in the team. I was hoping this game would live up to its hype . It was a let down imo.
I'm disappointed I thought it would have been a good game but LSU played from behind.
People are funny. I think South Carolina is a better team but those official were horrible. Every time LSU made a run you got a whistle that would stop it and they only started calling fouls on Carolina after they had a 20 point lead. Most of the fouls were non shooting. I dont think anyone can beat Carolina with there depth but we know it is more than one reason for refs to control the points being scored.

Because that’s a UConn fan who thinks the huskies can’t lose, Just jealous, if those two ladies were on the bench at the same time SC got taller players, so do you want to see a faster or taller players, Carolina gets much faster and run UConn ladies call time outs they don’t have or fake injury’s to get rest time. referees won’t pull those offical reviews again.
@@kenichitamagusuku3194 that is exactly my point. They are all very tall, taller than most other teams. SC is an excellent team and won fair and square, but I personally think LSU and the UConn Huskies are also. Circumstances were stacked against them, that’s all. Just sharing my thoughts.

@@debeklund8286 We’re a far better team. In 2017 we won the championship without our second best Player, Alaina Coates. We know how to win when a star goes down. Maybe other coaches can adjust. Geno or whoever included
Carolina defeated UConn last year in the championship and UConn had all their starters. They were perfectly healthy
I get SC is a far superior team than LSU. The Lady Tigers lost this game right from the start. LSU lacks size/height, strength, three point scoring prowess, and elite talent at point guard. Camila Cardozo and the other tall player, No. (4) for SC look like they have hit the 🏋️♂️ in a major way!
