The M21 was an M14 based DMR/Sniper Weapon System developed by the U.S. Army in the 80's when there was no semi-automatic weapon system to lay down precision fire. The current configuration of this rifle is closer to an XM25, which was used by SOCOM units in early Global War on Terror missions.

The Army sent me to sniper school at Fort Benning in 1970. We used the XM-21system. I remember the first shot I fired at 1000 yards as I was so filled with doubt I didn’t think it possible. I added holdover (the ART optic maxed out at 900) and squeezed the shot. The instructor proned out next to me said “Dead between the eyes, shoot again.” Now I’m 72 and still remember his words. It was a moment of great personal satisfaction.
The potential of the rifled barrel is not fully grasped by many folks. It is a remarkable long range instrument not to be underestimated. Needless to say,

It is time for me to say “Guys, wait a second.” Everything I’ve said here is true but I take no real pride in this shot. Satisfaction, yes, but pride, no. You see, we used a stadia aiming system. One line on top of the helmet, the other on the belt buckle. Point of impact should be the chest if you have read the wind correctly.
To have made a headshot is acceptable. But a better man would have put it in the nipple line. I just had a tolerable screw-up and got lucky.
What I am happy about is that I was an urban sniper whose mission was to work civil unrest, just as we are experiencing now. I hope to live long enough to see our current crop of head-hunters get turned loose and civil order restored. It only takes a couple of shots to teach the public manners and encourage acceptable behavior.

Hell even 300 yards is probably further than most think. I imagine a lot of people who use feet keep forgetting and thinking feet=meters=yards. Mind you not intentionally, at the very least you'd know yards are more than feet, even if you are not used to meters and more easily forget they are far closer to yards. However if you don't deal with distances a lot in your day to day life- like me your mind gets lazy and dumb and just lumps them all together.
500 with irons should be feasible for all, sketchy sometimes literally depending on your eyes and irons.
Way back in 1981, I sent one of my Specialists to sniper school from the 101st. M-21. He came back talking about hitting targets at 800 meters. Nice to have one of those in your back pocket as a Platoon Leader.
Hitting that small of a plate at that distance is tough with a semi auto. It's worse when your emotions start playing into it. Good work.

Thank you! In frequent conversation on the way to the range, we talked about something that was missing in our regular reviews. It was difficult to talk about a rifle's true potential solely based on the 100 yard grouping. We're really glad that everyone seems to enjoy this format! Now we just need to find more pockets of time to run out to the range and do post production!

An absolute pleasure watching these guys...I fired the M-21 and M-20 on an 800 yd range back in 1970 and watching these guys brought back real memories...I'm impressed with the shooting skills, but the "off-hand" analysis makes it even better....Thanks for putting this out there.
I love watching his finger. For all of you who don't realize what "squeeze the trigger means," watch. Typically only shooting 600yrds here. I've begun LD shooting at unknown distances, aka not a range, and find that to be really rewarding. Calculating the distance will mrad/mil measurements, making dope adjustments, and seeing the hit (usually lol) is so satisfying.

ferrall derrall I accidentally left a “7.62x39mm” as the caliber from a previous video on the rifle specs cut screen and he caught it.
We may do a reshoot for the extended range, but right now we’re focused on generating more tests for other platforms to build up the library first. The point of the practical accuracy isn’t for us to brag about stuff anyways, we wanted to put these things in real world situations with the heat, wind and elements and see how these rifles did. We don’t cool them down between shots either, since you wouldn’t have that opportunity in a real world engagement.
However on the note of getting to the bottom of this, there is value in seeing if barrel heat is an enemy of the system’s accuracy!

It would be great to see this done with all of the major battle rifles... , G3 variant, AR10 variant, and a FAL variant, even MK14 for fun (not counting this video)... Then later as a secondary series, do more modern rifles Gilil ACE heavy, Scar heavy, HK 417, SR25, Tavor heavy. even the Kel Tek RFB.. A guy can dream.....

I bought a 16" DB10 , and it is surprisingly accurate for such a budget rifle. ($750). Made in USA and even build their own barrels in house. It would be sweet to see a few budget rifles as well and see how they stack up. M&P10, DB10, even PSA 10, ect.. Loving the content.
calholli we do want to do the budget rifles. That’s a topic that frequently pops up between our conversations whilst driving out to the range. For now we’re trying to get a few classics documented first to get a good baseline, those will come in time.

Great shooting, guys. Don't be too surprised that the groups started to open up ~ 700 yards. You'd put a lot of shots down-range pretty quickly by that time, and the barrel and action were pretty well heated-up by then. That probably accounts for most of the misses; simple heat warping the barrel and changing the harmonics.
The mirage coming off that hot barrel would be incredible. It be so hard to see. Let alone what it does to the point of aim.
And as a side note, I loved my buddies mk14 overseas. Scary accurate for semiauto. 500m targets for days

It’s hard to grasp the distance watching on a small screen. But I walked 800yds out in a field near me. It’s ridiculous how far you’re shooting, with such accuracy!
When the zoom could not bring the target in on the video, that was a clue. 700 is way out there
You did very well. For the m1a, it did very well also. As you probably know, they start to show the wild shots past 600yds. Gas system harmonics on the barrel and weight effect from the gas cylinder on a hot barrel. Not knocking you down at all. Both you and the rifle did superior job. One of the best videos walking a m1a out in distance, if not the best!
Michael Santeler thank you! To be honest I don’t have combat experience with the M21 system. We all had M110’s and a myriad of guys complaining about their Mk14’s when I was in. This is fantastic and fascinating information, and we love this rifle for what it stands for: fulfilling a military necessity when no such equipment exists.
Michael Santeler - agreed... I also have a WAY TOO MUCH SPENT very similar LRB M25 with Krieger heavy glass bedded in the McMillan etc etc.... the SCAR H has known optics killing harmonics so like hell I’m mounting multi thousand dollar glass I self fund on something like that...
Other than comparing a bolt gun we could all pick apart every semi 308 capable of doing same on the market past or present, when shooter does their part.

9-Hole Reviews - ouch - but will they replace the second one... it is definitely becoming a well recognized problem with the rifle. It’s a lot of money in a base platform also to need to experiment with harmonics isolating mounts and devices that may only delay an inevitable optics failure.
I’m simply also not a fan of anything DI in 308, and anything Piston with descent proven reliability isn’t any lighter or more reliable than the garand style action. Insert Bias 😁
I inch at 500ys might put you in the 10ring from the ×ring and keep you in the top 10 in a match, 12 inchs could put you in the 8, or 9 ring and drop your score or placing mid pack. So for what your doing, one inch or a foot could be nothing big, or a really bad day.
I have a feeling the will spark some controversy, so here we go...
I am an experienced long range shooter (not an expert but I’ve got years of experience) after watching (and slobbering over) your first M21 video I feel that your rifle is easily capable of MOA and even sub MOA shooting out to about 850-950 yards. That usually (not always) when a .308 goes transonic and accuracy can (does not always) get a little squarely. That being said I have watched all of your videos and you are a good shot, we all make mistakes and when you’re being filmed the pressure is really on. So your gun is capable, the cartridge you are using is capable, you are capable, but I don’t think your optic is optimal. That looked like an 7” gong you where shooting at at 700, and at 10x that’s a hard shot. I know the scope is a phenomenon scope with high quality glass but for me shooting a small target on 10x would open the door for less then optimal accuracy. For that shot I would like at least 14x. Just my opinion. I also understand you are striving for a replica rifle and for that reason you may have have gone with the scope you did. Now I know guys are going to come in talking about how they shoot Prairie dogs at 1500 yards with a red dot sight or how they use 10x scopes for that kind of shot and shots at greater distances. Good for y’all, your better shooters then I am. I’m not saying it’s impossible, I’m just saying for this kind of practical accuracy test, maybe a higher power scope would improve results.

Thank you for your input! I agree with you that the scope is not optimal. I personally enjoy shooting 10x a lot. Despite the 18x capability on the RPR, I usually shoot it 10x out to 1,100 on that range. That particular Mk4 was a very early GWOT era production and tunnels pretty badly. I think the more recent production scopes are better on the glass, but in the spirit of the M21 as a relic... why not. Partially I enjoy the 10x scopes out of habit, I have never shot at prairie dogs with these things, but it would be interesting how these rifle would perform.
That said, the conditions that we were shooting in that day should also be considered. We had baked in the 90-100 deg Texas heat for hours at that point, and I have seen a degradation in my performance when I am hot and sweat is rolling into my eyes. I can't rule out that it wasn't shooter error at all.
Some other M14 shooters here have pointed out that the gas block on those things mess with the harmonics when it get heated up... and I wasn't taking it easy on the rifle. Plus the mirage was already there, add in the fact that the rifle has the vented hand guard (poor choice on my part), I think there are many reasons that contributed to this performance.
However, I'd like to draw our focus to the fact that Josh and I are putting on these "practical accuracy" sessions to see how these things perform when the shooter and rifle are put into very real-world scenarios. As much as I'd love to appear like we're super-human with firearms, we're not. These real-world elements have effects on these systems and the shooters and that's the whole point of this series: to explore a "real-world expected accuracy" from these firearms. After all, we're enthusiasts.

Great post, Ray ban. And a preface to this comment so that it's plain where I stand - The creators of this video and the shooter were *absolutely excellent*!
One of the biggest things you mentioned, Ray ban, was one of my biggest questions - What was the diameter of that plate at 700 yards? I assume it was a bit larger than 7". Seven inches would be 1 MOA at 700 yards, and that's asking a ton from a hot day with the vented handguard *and* windage. It would be asking a fair amount even of a Remington 700 in a McMillan with U.S. Optics glass where any substantial wind is involved, honestly.
The other thing is that to truly replicate an M21 build, we'd probably need a rifle that's had a gas cylinder shimming, proper action-to-stock fitment/bedding, and a careful overhaul of the front band.
The platform itself is absolutely capable of sub MOA accuracy. And the shooter appears to be, also! Well done to all.
Fancy way of saying he needs a higher magnification optic. 10X is sufficient to 1000 yards with the size targets being shot.
I could see an argument for a better tracking or better clarity. Higher magnification by itself wouldn't change the results.

This was very refreshing! Glad to see I'm not the only one taking a Springfield out for an lr day. Not sure how dialed in your loads are but if you want to reach past 700 consistently you'll have to change it. I had issues past 500 but once the bullet was changed 1000 isn't an issue, consistently

Henry is a great shooter. I find it curious that the M21 out performed Garand Thumb's test of the SVD, while in Henry's hands even an iron-sighted M1A using surplus ammo outperformed Garand and his long-range shooter-friend's use of the SVD. It is testament to Henry's shooting skills. Yet it is strange that the SVD is loved and the M14 platform, per Henry, is "Hated". I find this curious. All of my senior NCO's when I entered were Vietnam guys. They all loved the M14 and had...less...love for the M16. Yet the stories told today are of how problematic the M14 was and had to be replaced almost immediately. For the record, I never heard any of the shade towards the M14 in my first 20 years in the Army. And my personal experiences of it were all positive compared to the other weapons we had. The negative spin seems to be an artifact of a later generation. Why isn't the performance the issue, rather than the "buzz"?
A bit late of a reply, but because the SVD and the M14 served different purposes and so were judged differently by later generations. M14 was a battle rifle, effectively a rechambered Garand with a 20 round magazine, that every rifleman carried. The SVD was from the ground up a DMR, meant to augment a Soviet platoons firepower. The M14 has great potential for accuracy as Henry has demonstrated, but the amount of skill required to get the most out of it is rather large compared to the softer and easier shooting 5.56 rifles that the GWOT generation learned on. For every rifleman, the amount of time spent on learning and honing this skill was unnecessary hence its replacement by the M16/M4 and its relegation to the DMR role similar to the SVD where skilled marksmen in a squad or platoon can make the most out of the harder hitting calibers properties.
The rifle don't do shit without the shooter. Henry makes it look easy. To switch from one platform to the next and hit steel out at those ranges. Hope he's on my side!!
@@Jimmy-pc9qe No offense, but your history lesson is not history to me. I used those weapons. The distinction is not so real inasmuch as the M21 Sniper system is a glass bedded m14 with a scope. My units had those until the m24 replaced them. We also had SVDs. And it was policy that our Snipers train with both.
The point I was making is that the disparity in "love" is not performance oriented. It is the lovechild of a great number of new shooters with narrow experience. If you asked any of my snipers ( or the company's DMRs) whether they liked SVD or M21 more, 30 years ago, they all said they preferred the M21/14. Why? Better sights/ scope, a little smoother action. The M14 is hated because the M16 is viewed as "newer", and "standard", and many parts don't work the same way on the M14. But when someone is trying to kill you from more than CQB range, it is a good friend to have.
I'm impressed that they showed the 700yd misses and that even a good shooter can have some hiccups now and again.
Most TH-cam shooting videos are highly edited... you know, only the hits are included! This was an honest video with hits and misses, I appreciated it.
M1 garand: holds 8 rounds of 30-06 and is praised by everyone for it's accuracy and reliability.
M14: slightly different gas system, 20 round box magazine And chambered for the modern 308. Same people call it unreliable and a bad rifle.
Now I never had an issue with mine, but the M14 is literally just a better and more modern version of an M1 garand, what's not to like.
This particular configuration is very different from a stock m14.

the problem was that they took billions of dollars and 14 years to get there, especially considering what it was up against for other weapons. the AR-10 was the better weapon but ordinance was pants on head retarded.
What I loved about the 21 was that it was also a capable defensive weapon- and you could rapidly engage multiple targets. Worth the trade off in accuracy in many tactical situations. Used the ART II scope in my day. We used national match loads which as I recall were 150 grain- could be wrong. But even garden verity rounds fronm a 60 belt were useful

How's it iconic? It took like 15 years to develop and was the main service rifle for like 3 years? It's a pain to accurize and keep accurate. You look at it wrong, and it looses zero. The only reason why we had them in GWOT was because they were in a warehouse. It has no legacy, to speak of instead of being expensive, overweight, underwhelming, and short-lived.

@@556bc Furthermore since the M14 is really just a Garand action with an improved gas system and a box magazine, one could say that it traces it's roots back to the rifle that won WW2. I wouldn't blame anyone for calling it iconic. Obviously not as iconic as the M1 Garand itself, but it is an extension of that design, and still used in battle to this day.

I read an article and I am quite sure it been over 25 year ago,about a WW1 sniper at Camp Perry.. He took a 1903 Springfield Rifle will iron sights and hit the target 1000 miles down range. And Marine Corps Boot Camp we had to qualify with the M1 from 500 yard . I have a rifle scope on my M1A But I’m wore comfortable shooting with the iron sights.

@Jumping Jehosafat my loaded does not have an archangel stock. It has match grade heavy barrel. It is noticeably heavy. I have match grade iron sites. I have used iron sites out to 800 yards. I do not have a range that goes further than 800 yards where I live. So, with iron sites, the cheek rest is fine. But if I used optics, I would need to customize the stock. The barrel functions flawlessly. Like I said, it is noticeably heavier than standard M1A, and much heavier than my scout M1a, so carrying the loaded is more work.
@Jumping Jehosafat l like my loaded. It doesn't string. I do not have the archangel stock. My loaded has a heavy barrel match grade barrel and match grade iron sites. I have shot out to 800 yards, no problem. Where I live, there is no range further than that. Using iron sites, the cheek rest is fine. But if I used optics I would need to customize the the stock.
@Jumping Jehosafat the only down side to the loaded is that the heavy barrel is quite noticeably heavy. Carrying it all day is a chore. Hence, why I got the scout M1a, it feels like a lightweight after carrying the loaded, because of the heavy barrel.
scout squad is my favorite rifle. it was a tough choice between the loaded, scout and socom but i couldnt afford the loaded lol and my buddy has the socom so i get to fire it regardless. CHEERS!

I was a sniper in Vietnam and school trained in country. We shot the XM-21 Sniper rifles and shot easly out to 900 meters which was what the scopes were set for back then. Not Yards! So you can see the rifle and scope were accurate out to 900 METERS and beyond with some good match ammo.
You make outstanding videos. This is completely unbiased results from fairly good shooters. Keep them coming guys.

Long time since I was at USMC Camp Matthews and firing an M-14 to 500 yards with iron sights to qualify. Hitting at longer ranges, even with a scope and match ammo, is impressive.

Andy Prariedog thank you! Yes, this series originated from conversations that we’ve had on our drives out to the range: how do we capture the enjoyment of a quality rifle, or sometimes to anguish of an uncooperative day.
Practical Accuracy was born after we sat down and came up with the parameters for the three rifle types. We hope to test as many as we can to give you guys our raw impressions on these cool machines, and see how they perform in general scenarios and varying distances.
I was a US Army officer who never got to do sniper school (despite it being my dream school, I was ineligible, since I was in the Ordnance Corps), I am only an Shooting and ballistic enthusiast, who’s gotten some strangely unique opportunities to learn from some of our snipers, DMs, and old timers who wrote the current US Mil sniper doctrine.
Now that I’m a civilian, I have more obligations in the “grown-up” life!

Andy Prariedog I can't wait to see that video man. Sadly in my area about the farthest distance I have to shoot without shooting over a road is 600 yards. Its at one of the areas we hunt at and it has a long field to shoot across. Although we might be able to squeeze another 200 yards or so out of it. But there is a huge railroad the runs through half the field. Trains go through there every so often.
I hear ya on the limits. Local range, I can squeeze 400 out of it but as with you, there is a sparingly used road behind the firing line. But 50 minutes away, it's an easy 1K.

1970, 101St Airborne Div. School at Camp Evans. We called it the XM21. The adjustable cheekpiece is a must.
I'm not a gun nut at all (never owned a gun) but have enjoyed watching a lot of these videos, specially the older versions like the Finnish open sight M91 rifle, that was just exceptional shooting.
The spotter failed at the end with properly classifying the misses. Yes, the shot was to the right, but by how much? An inch, half an inch, a foot? These all matter in terms of making final adjustments. These frustrations led to the shooter shuffling around and losing his place, increasing the amount of missed shots. At 700-1000 yards it really becomes less about the bullet and more about the environment. Wind, heat, optical shift, gravity, these all play a huge role at the those distances.
Looked cool though, but that ejection pattern threw me off.

Taking a 175gr 308 out to 800 yards with 10x magnification is great to see! Got plans for a POF Revolution 308 18.5" with a Primary Arms GLx 2.5-10x44 for this exact kind of shooting. I'll save the 4-16 for 6.5 Creedmoor out to 1000

We've already completed filming on the FAL para, but those para sights are hard past 300/350, since they are only set for 150 and 250. I feel that we need an L1A1 SLR or a full sized FAL to show what it can really do.
That being said, Practical Accuracy videos are here to show the limitations to these systems. While the FAL Para is much shorter and easier to handle, the limitation on distance due to the para sights are underscore the tradeoff for handling and lesser weight.
The furthest I have shot, and hit the target, was with a K98 in .30-06 hitting a target at 508 yards. I grazzed a stationary clay pigeon once out of 5 rounds. Unless you are shooting in the mountains, or down a power line around here though, more than 200 yards is rare.

I just got my side-stamped IDE Polytech back from Smith Enterprises after a full bolt conversion work over. It's sporting a TRW bolt now, and surprisingly they threw in a new Springfield barrel because the original Chinese barrel was getting in the way of fitting the bolt. They also installed one of their extended scope mounts I had bought ahead of time and dropped off with the rifle, along with shimming the gas system with shims I supplied and swapping the fake flash suppressor with a real one with bayonet lug that I also supplied. They also fixed the extended bolt stop/release that had gotten boogered up when my roommate got his hands on it when I tried to install it originally. Overall a damn good job that I'm in the process of scoping. Picked up a Vortex Crossfire II 6-24x50 on sale over Black Friday/Cyber Monday and got a pair of Vortex tactical rings to set it in. Waiting on my inch/pound torque screwdriver kit in the mail before aligning and lapping the rings for final install and threadlocking. My end goal is to have this rifle built like yours, to original M21 spec or better, but for now I'm gonna enjoy trying to shoot the rifling out of this unexpected free Springfield barrel. From what I understood it's a brand new cast-off barrel from somebody else's factory new gun they dropped off to have a bunch of custom work done right out of the box, and part of that was a match barrel. So when my original Chinese barrel became an issue to completing the bolt conversion on my Polytech they just grabbed his original barrel and threw it on my rifle. Once I get the scratch together I'll probably be in touch about getting an introduction to the M21 guru in the frozen wastes of Alaska to get the rest of the work done.

I have such a love/hate relationship with my M1a. I love the accuracy with iron sites, but whenever I put a scope on it the cheek rise has to be so damn high. I'll just leave the scope off I guess.
This Pro Mag Archangel replacement stock has an adjustable cheek riser that solves that problem. I am going to try one.

Hard Target we hope so. In frequent conversion we have talked about how people on internet-land spread rumors on things that are impossible based on perceptions. Our idea of coming up with this PA series is to start conversion in the community on what the actual “practical accuracy” is when you really push these firearms. It’s been a joy to shoot so far!

Great overview of capabilities. I never understood the cult following of M14 based rifles. Decade long development cycle and almost non-existent primary service life with so-so reliability and accuracy. Give me an AR based platform any day like the M110.
Seth Rich no argument here. Cult is the correct word. The M14 looks pretty but is a terrible difficult journey to accurize.
"Non-existent primary service life"? Well, that depends on how you define "service life." The M-14 had a short tenure as the standard long arm of the American armed forces, but a very long service life as a special-purpose rifle, as it has been in service in various specialist roles since its introduction - SLR with the Marine Corps and U.S. Army in Vietnam (including service as a sniper rifle with the army); line-throwing and mine detonation with the U.S. Navy; competition service rifle for various military teams; ceremonial weapon for honor guards; long arm of choice for many Marine guard detachments at U.S. embassies; DMR service in Afghanistan and Iraq with the Marines, Army and U.S. Navy SEALS. Properly maintained and used, the platform is capable of a high degree of accuracy, and is extremely robust and reliable. The AR10 probably gets the nod as being slightly more accurate, but a match-conditioned M14/M1A is more-than-capable of fulfilling any military mission likely to be assigned. And the AR10 platform wishes it was as tough, robust and reliable as the M14. Hey, think as you like - just leaves more '14s for the military men who want to use them.
Nothing to understand. The sheer dereliction of duty that the Ordnance Corps exhibited over their push for the M14 platform was what caused their demise. These wonderful people intentionally sabotaged the M16 program, knowing that US Soldiers would likely die on the battlefield as a direct result of their actions. All that just to keep the M14 in Service despite it's horrible track record. Once discovered, they were disciplined and shut down completely over this crap rifle. Look it up.
m14 tough, reliable and robust? the ebr variant definitely isnt any of those things.

The M21 is my favorite Military rifle. The M24 was just a glorified deer rifle. An 18 Delta, MSG O'Rourke made a 900-meter headshot in Iran back in the '70s with the M21. Later he became the NCOIC of the SOTIC Course at Bragg. The M24 did not have detachable magazines or a rate of fire for combat. When it first came out the extractor would break so buddies of mine in the SEALs had to carry an extra bolt. After I save up some money after my last Henry Rifle purchase, I might get one of these. Unless the Savage .338 Lapua keeps calling my name.

I think sometimes when content creators cut out all the misses, or showcase a rifles accuracy on what they want rather than what they see, it builds up unrealistic lores on a rifle's performance... directly translating to bad intel to the guy who has to use that particular weapon system for work.

Man, by the time you got to 700 you had fired 18 rnds in 105 seconds, that barrel had to be getting HOT, accounting for 14 ft of drop with a hot barrel - I'm surprised you were even on paper at the point. Repeat the 700 with a cold barrel, I think you're on in 3
We plan on taking it back to just to the LR side. If that works then I think we'll have proven that these medium weight barrels are accurate, but heat is a huge considerations then.

That barrel does get hot. Had a rookie on my ODA back in the '90s pick one up that was leaning against a pickup truck in El Salvador after the Senior Weapons Sergeant and I (18D) had a competition with a total of 200 rounds. Wish I could act it out for you, it was hilarious and reiterated the Code Name "Mano de Fuego".
I was wondering how the heat coming up through the heat shield affects your vision. Did you have problems? Apparently that is an early type and was replaced with a non-vented cover due to fragility and making it hard to acquire a clean visual while shooting on the M14.
That and the mirage on a hot day had me completely losing my target past 500 with my Springfield Socom. Cold shots vs hot were all over the place on the dope. These rifles were made WAY BETTER...ESPECIALLY the ones bedded before 75, than the new offerings for civis. I was really disappointed for what I spent on the Socom.

Did not even know I wanted one of these rifles. Carried one in Iraq, but did not think much about it. This will now be a build. I would rather have this over an AR-10.

A 1:12 twist usually adequate for stabilizing a 175-grain Sierra Match King BTHP. Springfield Armory's M1As have a 1:11.25 RHT rate, if memory serves. It is also a good idea to check the twist yourself, since published twist rate specs often vary from those actually on that barrel. The Palma pills should work well also, although maybe you'd want something better at bucking the wind by the time you are at 940 yards.
GeorgiaBoy1961 cheers! This rifle has a medium weight 1:10 NM barrel and the gas is actually tuned for 175; the lighter 147 ball don’t cycle through this anymore!
Gotcha... a 1:10 would be ideal for heavier projectiles, what you'd want if you knew the rifle was going to be used more often in a precision DMR-type role, as opposed to just shooting run-of-the-mill FMJ all the time.
Already tried 168 SMK proved to be somewhat effective in an FCP I have. I didn't care for the performance really. 1-12 I rather test out the 155 ELD since their design purpose was for this twist rate. This Fulton M14 I have is not a tack driver and I don't expect stellar accuracy. Just using what I have for semiauto 308.

Thanks! so i'm not sure if it shows, but that Mk4 scope with the M3 turrets have coarse 1MOA elevation adj. I'm used to using MRAD, but once i charted it out (which took no time), the system was crazy fast compared to the precision rifles, but you can tell that it was designed to put accurate fire on head/torso sized targets to 800, much like an accurate SVD.
100 - 0 MOA
200 - 1MOA
300 - 4 MOA
400 - 7 MOA
500 - 10 MOA
600 - 14 MOA
700 - 20 MOA
800 - 25 MOA
also, hold-off windage adj, I am used to using the mil-dot reticle hold-off to substitute the dial if i'm not on a single target firing solution.
That is a way more technical response that I was expecting. Hahah. I think I figured it out. When your turret is at the 0 MOA setting, then you have a 100 yard or meter zero (not sure what unit of measurement you were are using).

haha sorry, I geek out on these things. Those are in Yards. The M21's Leupold Mk4 scope is the only scope that I have that isn't Mil/Mil, because it was a period correct scope to the M21. It annoys me that I have to switch gears, but it's a part of the enjoyment of tinkering with these things!
Those 700 yd misses were still very accurate. Lol I remember shooting that far with machine guns and impacts spitting dirt all over the target. Lord that’s frustrating.
