I had a similar experience. As I've gotten older I can say that I'm glad it's out of my vocabulary. Growing up in Chicago, it kinda just became a habit, and it happened organically. Honestly, a lot of my friends would be fine if I kept saying it, but I just never picked it back up. I don't like the idea of being pointed to as the example for some ignorant white person trying to make the "well if they can say it.." argument. Also, I feel like being a white dude from a predominantly black community carries a level of, at the very least, social responsibility. that being said, it's better for everyone involved if I don't say it, so I don't. There's a million other words I can use that serve the same purpose and don't come with extra baggage.
