    I was ready to buy a montage as I own a Kronos but I thought the Sequencer had matured but after seeing this , I realise I nearly spent bad.
    You would not believe how silly it is to not be able to create seamlessly, auditioning sounds while the sequencer is playing. That’s the difference between a professional workstation and a light weight. I’m surprise at Yamaha for this.
    You wonder, who really decides these things. Thanks for you video brother. I searched for this and now I know. Hopefully maybe they will add the feature one day soon if not already.

      Glad to help! Yeah the Montage isn't a workstation imo, they never designed it to be, so adding this pattern sequencing after the fact feels like the "after the fact" feature that it is. Not something I would really use, but as far as a synth/sound source the Montage is dope!

    Brother, I bought this Montage a couple of weeks ago and sold my beloved Motif XF to get it, in part because they finally added a sequencer. Until I saw this video, I was about to send that joint back...real talk!!! You explained the way it works WAY BETTER than most! Thank you!!!! Now, all Yamaha needs to do is to make it read Motif sequences. Then it would be a no brainer...

    Fantom is very straightforward and precise when it comes to sequencing. Then the editing capabilities on Fantom is super awesome. Professional sequencer vs lightweight sequencer.

  • @seankalifut9948

    This is why I still like the sequencer in the Motif XF versus the Montage. You do not have to stop the sequence to select your sounds and you can edit while the sequence is still playing.

    Hmm, this is interesting in the fact they weren’t initially designed to standalone sequence. On the Montage it has good Cubase and Cubasis integration and the Fantom has Logic Pro integration. I think this video needs a part 2 and a part 3, specifically addressing sequencing using iOS (cubasis, garageband) and desktop (Cubase, Logic Pro X)

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Montage wasn't designed as a workstation, it was a synth first, but this update definitely gives it a bit more help in that workstation area. I think standalone sequencing was always a major part of the design of the Fantom. When I use them with iOS I just record audio, same with anything I do on the desktop. I'm definitely not doing any MIDI routing/triggering, just straight to audio, gonna have to record it anyway so I just skip the MIDI step hahaha.

    apart from ease of operation, or sound quality, the one aspect that puts Roland FAR ahead, is the view screen: on the Montage it is primarily mono-chromatic, as such, the eye does not go to any one thing in particular, but tends to take in the whole, which I find more confusing: On the Roland, you have distinct and brilliant color differences, and a very sharp contrast, that immediately sets the eyes on various different parts, especially the one that you choose. If you keep in mind, that all of these displays are relatively small compared to a computer screen, this becomes a very important aspect in the workflow.

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's actually super important, I personally think overall the Fantoms GUI is easier to navigate. I know the Montage and have used it for quite a while but I remember when I first used it things were a bit confusing. On the Fantom it feels a bit more refined, snappy, and the colors pop more which makes it easier to get around.

    Best tutorial on using the Yamaha sequencer I’ve been able to find. My only question is regarding the proper way to go about the two step saving process you mentioned. Do you have a tutorial going over this process? Any time I save a sequence with multiple parts, leave the sequencer page, and try to reload it, it drops all but the first part/sound. Any help is appreciated. Thanks man!

    • @SoundsAndGear

      Thanks for watching! Make sure you actually save the performance itself as a user performance as well as the pattern. Then make sure they are linked. So when you load the pattern it will load that performance. I haven't done a video on it yet, but it's on the list. Thanks!

Now recently pick up the Fantom 6, I agree about the chaining the patterns to create a song, I would like to see the Fantom have either an append a pattern function or the ability to convert the song patterns into a liner based song so one could do overdubs like the Montage. i ve seen so many comparison videos and still I cannot make a decision for me which would be the best pick.
    as for the sequencer thing yeah they added Record rehearsal to avoid the issue being forced to stop the playback in order to preview and add new sounds. I guess it came with OS 3.0 ?
    anyway I pretty much prefer the straight forward design of the fantom software and usability but absolutely love sound engine of the montage
    in terms of sequencing workflow and recordings I doubt it makes a big difference for home musicians that will definitely have some sort of software like logic oder cubase for making arrangements and such. so why blame the synth?
    which would be your first choice and why?

      I think it is just a difference in sound character, they've always sounded different to me, from way back in the day. I've had gear from both and always felt Yamaha had a more organic sound where Roland was a bit more "hi fi" in general. Of course you can find organic sounds on Roland and hi fi stuff from Yamaha but the overall sound character to me was like this. Also, I think if Roland brings more new acoustic sounds, along with the Supernatural acoustic stuff from the Integra, etc, it will even out.

      I have tried endless forms of HW and SW sequencers as well as multi-channel MIDI sound generators. Considering your input approach, have you tried using a 'tracker' type sequencer? That would require the least number of clicks/keystrokes to enter musical data, especially if paired with a HW MIDI sound module where you can send BANK/PC messages to get straight to the preset you want and not have to fiddle with endless menus. For example: Renoise tracker SW on your computer sending 16 MIDI channels to either the improved MOXF6, MODX6, or Roland Integra 7. If you want a HW tracker, there is the Polyend Tracker but I do not know if the keys would be easy to activate/navigate with your typing stick compared to your current keyboard.

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah pretty much, except, on the Fantom the sounds aren't exclusive to the Scene. On the Montage, sounds are exclusive to the performance, so you can adjust/change them and it will not mess with the other presets. On the Fantom it will save everything but if you adjust the sound/tone you should save it manually first so it doesn't mess up that sound in other scenes.

    Awesome video 💖
    I wanted to move into a Keyboard DAW workstation coming from working solely in a virtual one on desktop. I have waded back and forth from the Yamaha Montage and the Roland Fantom 8. I ultimately went with the Fantom 8 literally this morning purchased from Kraft Music out of Wisconsin. I primarily produce "Ethereal Trance", "Chill" and "Trip Hop" tracks and can't wait to move into the physical world of producing.
    I am so used to just layering up a composition piece by piece on desktop which is why I went with the Fantom 8.
    I'm just curious if it's possible to extract patterns from one scene and import them into another or new scene on the Fantom? Namely exporting different sessions patterns to the pads and just remixing those elements on the fly to remix the elements? My lil brain is just swooning over the creative freedom I'm hoping this purchase will bring to my workflow.

    thank you for a very clear video explaining these contrasting features: I have a statement and a question: I don't know why they both feel that they have to limit so much: IE: my Motif has 16 sections of 16 instruments: both of these keyboards have half of that, eight...Montage may call it a "scene", but it is similar to the section in Motif.....also: with the Roland, the patterns have a 32 bar limit, which is just terrible: when you are doing "new agey" type instrumental only type songs, this is not a problem because there is a lot of looping involved, but when you are doing more traditional pop songs, you sometimes need as much sections as possible. my question is this: I have seen videos of the Fantom where is it very easy to send information OUT to trigger an external sound source in any of the tracks, but in all of the Montage videos , I have not seen this yet, is this something you CAN do with the Montage?

    This is the best down to earth demonstration of the Montage pattern sequencer on the net. Simple and effective!
    The Montage is a performance keyboard like the Nord Stage 3 and NOT a workstation. We all knew that before we purchased it. Look in the mirror first and start the blame there lol. Did Yamaha miss an opportunity? Sure..... but it will only be a digital scratch pad via updates. Nothing more. Foolish to think otherwise. I hear ya! I like the looks of both to be honest, Roland newer, Montage has a more "substatial" look, the bigger faders, knobs, etc. It's no contest in terms of navigation though, Roland winds hands down. Sound wise, both are good, I lean more towards Montage acoustic/instrument stuff, but there are still sounds I love from Roland. The Fantom is the better overall workstation for sure, but Montage isn't really a workstation, just a synth which is getting workstation features through updates. Tbh my main issue with most YAMAHA boards is that I'm mostly a pianist and they don't have sympathetic string resonance even on the CP88. That's a big thing that adds a lot of realism.
